Meeting Minutes for Saturday, May 5, 2007

Call to Order:
President Terri Torres called the meeting to order at 10:22 at Dameron Hospital, Conference Room B.
The following information was passed around during the meeting to inform attendees:
- Flyer for Pinoy Stories, Sat., May 12th, Kularts in Association with Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center, SF
- Flyer for Filipino Fiesta 2007 at the Rizal Community Center, Sacramento, Sun., June 3rd from 10 am – 5 pm
- KVIE Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Local Hero Awards Invite, Tue. May 8th from 5:30pm – 7:30pm
- Flyer for Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center Presents the 10th Annual United States of Asian American Festival (USAA). Events April 26th through August 25th at various sites in San Francisco. Refer to www.apiculturalcenter.org.
- Generations, newsletter from FANHS National. Other FANHS Chapter upcoming activities and events listed.
- A wrap-up of the Hawaii Conference and information for the next conference to be held in Anchorage, Alaska from July 2nd to the 5th, 2008.
- Info for the Filipino American Grand Reunion, September 7th and 8th at the Sacramento Double Tree.
- A ‘Thank You’ from the Stanford University Students for touring Little Manila in March.
- Flyer for Great Valley Center Annual Conference May 9th to the 11th, Sacramento.
- Flyer on owning land in Pahrump
Members Present:
Anita Bautista, Terri Torres, Bob Cabigas, Maria B. Vea, Leatrice B. Perez, Stephanie Teczon, and Amy Olmos.
Acceptance of Minutes:
Anita Bautista moved and Maria Vea seconded the motion to accept the minutes of April 7, 2007.
Committee Reports:
- Membership – Violet Dutra submitted a written report, since she couldn’t be in attendance.
Family – 57 Seniors – 63 Individuals – 13 Students - 5
Total Membership: 138
- Collections – Per Bob Cabigas, nothing to report. Terri Torres submitted to Bob newspaper articles from local papers of FANHS related articles and obituaries. Yearly storage fees will be due at the end of May and June. Violet Dutra will pay the costs and submit a reimbursement request to FANHS.
- Activities – Nothing new to report per Violet Dutra’s written report. Upcoming events are:
- The October 20, 2007 Annual Recognition Dinner. Suggestions for a site are still being considered. Nominations for honorees are due July 1st.
- Golf Tournament – a meeting for this will follow today’s chapter meeting.
- Education/Exhibit – Terri Torres reported on behalf of Virgie Melear. Virgie is awaiting responses from libraries in Stockton, Tracy, and Manteca. Bob Cabigas took down the April exhibit and its contents are currently stored at Anita Bautista’s home.
- Historians – Deanna and Moreno Balantac were not present. Members who have taken pictures or have articles for the 2007 album are asked to submit these to the historians.
Business:
- Treasurer Report – A written report was submitted by Violet Dutra. Bank Statement balances as of 04/30/2007:

- Museum Equipment CD 11,005.29

- Total Museum $64,197.18
- Patrick Johnston trophy update – Terri will give the trophy to Moreno Balantac who has an address as to where it can be sent. [Update: Moreno received the trophy on May 12th from Terri.]
- Stockton Pinoy Cookbook with Little Manila – The deadline for recipe submissions was April 30th. [Update: Deadline has been extended in order to receive more submissions. Cookbook will be put on hold with a possible print date in 2008. People are encouraged to submit their recipes and stories to Stockton Pinoy Cookbook, c/o Little Manila Foundation P.O. Box 1356, Stockton, CA 95201.]
- Arcadia Book on Filipinos in Stockton – A proposal has been submitted by Dawn Mabalon and Rico Reyes. [Update: A committee will be formed to review photographs for submission into book. More info is in enclosed Chapter Notes.]
- PBS Documentary – “Little Manila: Filipinos in California’s Heartland” – Per Anita Bautista, the preview held April 30th was well received. Approximately 90 people attended. The documentary aired on Channel 6 on May 2nd, with additional airings throughout the month of May. Positive feedback written of the documentary was printed in the Sacramento Bee, The Record, and the Tri-Valley Herald. FANHS was presented with a framed poster by KVIE. Members are encouraged to write, email, KVIE with positive feedback. In areas where the documentary is not currently being shown, members, or others, are encouraged to contact their local stations to inquire why and to request it. Links are also given for Stockton FANHS and the Little Manila Foundation for further information on the PBS website.
- Other Business
- CVAA Business Recognition – Richard Gacer was concerned as to why no Filipino businesses were recognized and would like FANHS to write about Filipino businesses. Terri will email Richard asking for more specifics.
- FANHS Trustees Meeting – Mel LaGasca has written a list of items that he will bring up at the Trustees meeting in June regarding standard policies for FANHS Chapters and National, especially regarding the use of the 501(c)3 number.
Announcements:
- Saturday, May 12th – 2nd Annual FANHS Invitation Golf Tournament
- Sunday, May 6th - Fil-Am Lions Breakfast, 7 am – 11 am at the Community Blind Center
- June 29th – June 30th – FANHS Trustees and Chapter President’s Meeting in Philadelphia.
Members who have suggested topics should contact Mel LaGasca as soon as possible.
- No chapter meeting for June and July and August. Next meeting will be Saturday, September 1st.
- The Barrio Fiesta – August 11 and 12th. FANHS will have an informational booth. We will need volunteers to man the booth for both days. Contact Terri or Anita if you’re willing to help out.
- Today, May 5th at 2 pm – Pete Jamero’s book signing for ‘Growing Up Brown’ at the Cesar Chavez library.
Meeting Adjourned:
President Terri Torres adjourned the meeting at 11:22 AM. Next meeting will be September 1st at Dameron Hospital; conference room B. Museum meeting will follow.
