Hello Everyone!

We have a lot of things planned for the rest of this year. First off, our 3rd Annual Recognition Award Dinner and Dance is slated for October 19. We will be honoring four deserving individuals this year – Mrs. Camila Carido, Sleepy Caballero, Mrs. Paula Daclan, and Frank Perez. Read more about this event elsewhere in this issue and come out to support this event.

We also will be participating in the Little Manila Historic District unveiling on October 26. That day will be a historic day for our Stockton community. I hope all of you will be able to attend. Visit the Little Manila Foundation website for more information – www.littlemanila.net.

An easy fundraising event for our museum project is happening on November 17 at Stockton's Weberstown Mall – the Magical Night of Giving. All we have to do is sell tickets to who ever wishes to attend the event, at $5 each prior to the event, and our chapter gets to keep the entire $5 for our project. Please contact our secretary, Violet Dutra, for tickets to buy and sell for this event. We have an opportunity to raise at least $1,000 for the museum project, maybe even more! Please support us!

Other events that we are participating in this year are listed in our calendar of events that we mail out to everyone each month. A partial schedule is listed in this newsletter. I hope everyone is able to attend at least one of the events. We miss seeing you!

I had a great time at the FANHS National conference held in July in Los Angeles. It was great to see everyone and to attend the various workshops and presentations. I always learn such interesting things! I am looking forward to the 2004 conference to be held in St. Louis. Please see photographs in this issue and on our website.

Hello Everyone!

This year has been full of exciting things for our chapter! You can read about some of them here in this newsletter. Virgie Melear and Anita Navalta Bautista have been very busy representing our chapter at different functions, and I thank them very much!

Our Museum Benefit on April 27 turned out very well, raising about $1100 for the fund. Slowly, but surely, we're getting there.

I urge all our members to try to attend this year's National Conference in Los Angeles on July 24 through July 28. As with all the conferences in the past, this one promises to be very educational and exciting. This will be my 3rd conference and I am looking forward to it. I always learn so much at the workshops. Either contact us or check out the Los Angeles Chapter's website for more information - www.fanhsla.org.

The summer is always a busy time for each of us, so we have decided not to have chapter meetings for July or August. So join us on September 7 for our next chapter meeting -- Anita Navalta Bautista will give her presentation about the "Social Box Era" -- plus we can catch up on our summer actitives.

Don't forget about Stockton's Barrio Fiesta at the Filipino Plaza on August 10 & 11 put on by the AFO -- they will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of that center. Our chapter will have a booth there with our FANHSing items and an exhibit for all to enjoy.

My family (the Juanitas family) had a reunion on June 29. We try to do this every couple of years. This year I compiled a 100-page booklet that tells the history of our family's Manongs who came over from the Philippines. I was able to use the knowledge that I have learned through being a FANHS member to recreate their lives. I think this is a must-do activity for everyone, especially for my generation, so their history is never forgotten.

See you in September!

Greetings!

As most of you know, we won't be having a chapter meeting in May due to an Asian-American history conference taking place the same day in San Francisco (May 4). A lot of our members wanted to attend the conference, including me, so it was voted to cancel our May meeting.

One of the topics I'm interested in hearing is how to use the facilities of the National Archives in San Bruno to further my genealogy research. I've used those facilities many times, especially in obtaining the ship records/passenger lists of my ancestors who came to the US from the Philippines. It was exciting to see their names on actual historical documents! I even found the names of some of the Filipinos who were "shipped" over for the 1906 St. Louis Exposition. I want to see what else is available there!

I hope you all have a chance to make it to our second annual Pinoy Museum Dessert/Dance Benefit on April 27. The money we raise in ticket sales will go to the museum fund. We have 250 tickets to sell at $10 each, so we have an opportunity to raise $2,500 for the fund. Although it's a drop in the bucket toward the actual amount needed to get our museum built, it's a start!

On a personal note, I want to repeat my plea to have someone volunteer to take over as Newsletter Editor for our chapter. All you need is a computer and a word processing program! And, of course, the time to devote to publishing this newsletter four times a year. Please contact me if you're interested. It would be a great help to me and the chapter.

I am happy that more of our members have been able to participate in our monthly meetings now that we meet on Saturday mornings. We have great things planned for this year, so come and check us out!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
by Terri Torres

Greetings and a Happy New Year!

First, a little about myself -- I am the daughter of Violet (Juanitas) Dutra and the granddaughter of Cirilo Yongque Juanitas. I've been a member of FANHS since 1995 and was elected as a two-year National Trustee of FANHS at the 2000 conference in Virginia Beach. I have found this experience challenging and I hope to be a good leader for our chapter.

Stockton Chapter has been given the task of building a National Filipino American Museum in Stockton. And thanks to the foundation begun by Cecil Bonzo and Frank Acoba and the dedication of our Vice President Mel LaGasca, we have accomplished quite a lot in the past few years. Our major concern is obtaining the funds to make this dream come true and we are working on that and hope that our members will also help us. Last year we held a special dessert/dance fund-raiser for the museum fund and are planning another benefit this year. I hope to see you there.

To meet our financial commitments for this year, we have explored many fund-raising suggestions, one of them will be to raise our advertising rates for the newsletter to $10 an issue. As noted in our chapter minutes from the December meeting, we're hoping that more members will participate in next year's Magical Night of Giving (which could easily raise $1,000) and the Barnes and Noble gift wrapping service (which could raise more than $120), as well as our monthly presentations. These events don't require a lot of work, just member participation in volunteering their time to sell tickets, bringing non-members to the educational presentations, and offering their services where needed. As of December 31, we have about 120 members.

I realize that everyone has their own agenda (family, jobs, etc.) but I am appealing to you to volunteer two hours of your time once a month to help us out. It would be great to see the museum built in your lifetime.
