October is always a busy one for us because it’s Filipino American History Month. I hope you get a chance to come and check out some of our activities!
First off, if you live in the Stockton area and subscribe to Comcast cable, be sure to watch the Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (APIA) and Central Valley Asian-American Chamber of Commerce (CVACC) “Our Voice” program on channel 26. The October program features myself, Anita Bautista, Mel LaGasca and Leatrice Perez, speaking about our chapter and the mission of FANHS. It’s every Tuesday night at 10PM this month.
Next, two Stockton libraries will be showing the PBS documentary “Little Manila: Filipinos in California’s Heartland” this month – Oct. 6 at Chavez Library at 2PM, and Oct. 22 at Troke Library at 6:30PM. I was able to speak a little about FANHS during the Oct. 6th showing, and Anita Bautista will be speaking at the Oct. 22nd showing. We really appreciate the local libraries for giving us a venue to display our exhibits and for featuring Filipino American programs at various times throughout the year.
Our big event is our 8th Annual Community Recognition Awards, (see the next page), so please come out and honor the awardees for 2007 and get your tickets before time runs out!
We have also been asked to speak this month about Filipino American history at an upcoming meeting of UOP’s Kilusan Club and at a Stanislaus State nursing class. We always welcome the opportunity to spread the word of our history!
Don’t forget to join us at our monthly chapter meetings – the next one will be Nov. 3rd, and we’ve been invited back to the home of Mel and Gail LaGasca for our Christmas Party meeting, tentatively planned for the second Saturday in December. Come and hang out and join in on the festivities!

It’s July and a lot has happened since our last newsletter in April! Busy, busy, busy!
First off, I hope everyone had a chance to watch the PBS documentary about Filipinos in Stockton – if not you can always order it from pbs.org or catch additional airings during this month.
Second, as some of you read in our May monthly mailer, Phi Delta Kappa International honored our chapter for our contributions to education. It was a great honor to receive this award – see a photograph on page 9.
Also pictured on page 9 are Pete Jamero and Rosalind Lamboy Dickinson taken at Pete’s book signing event at the Chavez Library on May 5th. Over 60 people were in attendance! If you have any suggestions of authors for future book signings, let us know, we can get the contact information to the library who can than make plans with the author.
Pictured on page 2 are photographs from the 2nd Annual FANHS National Museum Golf Tournament. As stated in our May monthly mailer, we made close to $4000 for the Museum Fund. We’ll start planning 2008’s tournament in September, so we need your suggestions and your help!
We will also need your help to man a table at the annual Barrio Festival in Stockton to be held on August 11 and 12. We’ll have an info-only table with historic photographs and will need several people to volunteer those two days to answer any questions the festival goers might have. Contact Anita Bautista if you can help out (209) 956-1728.
Also, we are in the process of making an Arcadia Publishing book of Filipinos in Stockton and another Filipino History calendar for 2008, so we need your photographs! See the enclosed flyer for more information!
Last off, I want to thank everyone for their kind words and condolences to my mother, and me on the passing of my stepfather, Donald Dutra, Sr., on June 29th. He will be sorely missed by us all!

The year is going by fast! There are a lot of things coming up, so I want to take this space to let you all know what they are!
Since May is Asian Pacific American History Month, we have a few things lined up for you.
First off, the video documentary that we’ve been working on with PBS KVIE will be aired on our local PBS station on May 2nd (check your local listings for the time). KVIE has been working with us and the Little Manila Foundation to make this 25-minute documentary – and judging by the rough-cut, it looks pretty good! Make sure you watch it!
Second, on May 5th, there will be a book signing event, to be held at the Chavez Library, 605 N El Dorado St, Stockton, featuring Peter Jamero and his book, “Growing Up Brown”. This is a free event; open to the public, at 2PM. Pete will share his experiences of growing up on a labor camp, overcoming poverty and race difficulties to become a noted government official, a professor and a community activist. Please come out and support this event!
Third is our 2nd annual Golf Tournament FANHS National Museum fundraiser – see page 7. We’re hoping to raise more funds this year than last year for the Museum Project and we’re hoping that the rest of the FANHS chapters are working on fundraisers for the National Museum also.
Lastly, I want to remind everyone that October will be here before you realize it and that means it will be time for our 8th Annual Community Recognition AwardsLuncheon and the deadline to get in your nominations is July 1st. So don’t delay! Let us know who you want recognized this year and get their biographies to the nominations committee!
See you soon!

Another year has come and gone, and we had a great time! In this issue you’ll see our annual list of activities we held or participated in. This list wasn’t created to brag, it was created to show how a lot of little things can add up to a big thing – and that thing is our mission of FANHS – to spread the word about Filipino American history! Each year we try to do our best to keep spreading the word and we had a lot of help last year – the Little Manila Foundation, the Bahala Na Escrima group, the UOP Kilusan students, and our own members. Thank you to all of you! Without you, we’d be struggling! In the past 15 years, I’ve seen this chapter grow and flourish and become an important part of FANHS and the Stockton community. I’ve seen our membership grow from a handful to over 160 members. I’ve seen the National FANHS Museum fund grow from $1500 to over $50,000. I’ve seen the biennial FANHS conferences grow from being “in the red” to happily being “in the black”! I’ve seen a growing interest in our history from all sorts of people from all over the country. And that’s what we want to see! We sure had a busy year in 2006 – what’s in store for us in 2007? The only way to find out is to come and join us!
PS: I sure hope you were able to get a copy of the Filipino American History calendar for 2007 – it sold out quick! If you did buy one, and at the end of the year you feel you don’t have a place to store it, donate it back to our archives, we’d appreciate it!If you find any mistakes or have additional information for the calendar, contact us so we can include it into the next calendar for 2008. This has been a great fundraiser for the National FANHS Museum and for the Little Manila Foundation – when we get the final dollar figures, you’ll be the first to know! Check out the information for the Stockton Pinoy Cookbook on the next page – another way to support our cause!
