FANHS STOCKTON CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES FOR NOVEMBER 1, 2008
By Leatrice B. Perez, Recording Secretary
CALL TO ORDER
Vice President Mel LaGasca called the meeting to order at 10:20 A.M. Meeting was held in the Annex Building of Dameron Hospital. President Anita Bautista was attending Sonoma County Chapter’s premiere screenings of "Remembering Our Manongs, Sonoma County’s Filipino History" and took some of our Stockton Chapter’s display boards of our historical photos and exhibits.
Members present: Mel LaGasca, Deanna Balantac, Moreno Balantac, Terri Torres, Violet Dutra, Leatrice Perez, and visiting students of Kilusan Pilipino of the Univ. of Pacific – Christine Obille, Michelle Lugar and Kyle Pace.
Items distributed for information:
1. Flyer on "Exhibit at the Presidio, War & Dissent."
2.Flyer on California Council for the Humanities Network.
3. Invitation to the Premiere screenings of "Remembering Our Manongs: Sonoma County’s Filipino History."
Before the business meeting convened, Mel LaGasca asked the students to reintroduce themselves after which they informed us of their activities. They had attended Friendship Games at Cal State Fullerton and held a picnic on October 11 for High School senior students from 13 high schools in Stockton area, Tracy, Manteca, Lathrop and Lodi. They said they are growing because of the new freshmen entering college. They will hold their annual "Barrio Festival" at UOP on November 18 and email us the time and place. We could probably have a table for our FANHS information and exhibits as before. Terri passed around an email from Anita to Kilusan UOP, to see if they would like to volunteer in the project of visiting local cemeteries to list Filipino veterans. Comment was made that not all grave markers identify the person as a veteran. In response to their question of time, they were told there is no exact time frame for this to be accomplished. Other ideas that the students can do is their own "Talk Story", i.e. interview and video their own parents for oral history projects. Mel asked if they get credit for community service and they answered that there is a Center for Community Involvement on campus and they can let the center know when they participate in such activity. Mel informed them of some of the future projects in which they can assist: The Golf Tournament and Picnic on May 9, 2009; the Trustees Meeting on July 25 – 26, 2009; we have 2 storage units which have items and articles that need to be documented (procedures will be written). Before they left, they said that if they are notified of these activities, they would have students available to help. Mel reminded them of the invitation to our Christmas potluck meeting on December 13, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at his home in Tracy.
ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES
It was moved by Violet Dutra and seconded by Deanna Balantac to approve the minutes as distributed. Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS – We still do not have a COLLECTIONS chairman.
Trustee Meeting 2009: On October 10, 2008, Mel sent notices to Prof. Joan May Cordova, Dorothy and Fred Cordova, Linda Revilla and Ron Buenaventura about having the Trustees meeting on July 25- 26, 2009. He has not yet heard from them. Mel will send another request and inform them at we would need a response by January 2009. Trustees need to know by December 2008 if they can come in July.
National Conference: Discussion followed on the options for an off-year conference or whether we will bid for the 2012 conference. We know that Albuquerque FANHS wants the conference and also San Diego has expressed the same. Mel said he would like to have something in writing from FANHS Headquarters about the 2012 conference. We have nothing prepared as a bid. He said he would draft a bid for the 2012 conference.
Christmas Potluck/Meeting: Mel said that he has invited several guest speakers to the Christmas business/potluck meeting at his home on December 13. They are – Todd Sumners an Accountant; Ana Marcelo on her research regarding the Negro Military in the Philippines; Linda Revilla on Grants; also, a Poet-Artist showing a Documentary Film on the International Hotel in San Francisco. Mel LaGasca’s home address: 1840 McPeak Court, Tracy, CA 95376.
NEW BUSINESS
2009 Filipino American History Calendars: On October 25, Anita reported she worked with Dawn Mabalon (Little Manila) to choose pictures for the 2009 calendar. It was discussed that we should meet with Little Manila committee to talk about the process for funding the calendar. We haven’t received funds yet for 2008 calendars sold. Terri mentioned that it might be partly because LM still has some calendars left to be sold. Terri said that she will email Dawn Mabalon to ask when we can meet with LM to discuss the calendar. Mel said he spoke with Dillon Delvo to discuss how Little Manila and FANHS Stockton Chapter will conduct business. LM will be meeting on November 11 evening. He will try to attend it and he will let Anita Bautista know.
Festival of Trees: Mel stated that Mary Louise Lopez and her Red Hat Society volunteered to decorate our tree for the Festival of Trees project at the Micke Grove San Joaquin County Historical Museum. Mel will help Mary Louise – the theme will be Asparagus Workers.
Storage Units Insurance: Terri received a letter from the storage company requesting Mandatory Insurance for our 2 Storage Units. She said that if we don’t do anything about insurance coverage by December 1, 2008, they will automatically charge us $9.00 per month for $2,000.00 coverage for each storage unit. A brief discussion followed on whether the contents of the units contain $2000.00 worth of items. Not having a detailed inventory in hand, we will accept this for the time being. The insurance company is "Voyager Property & Casualty Insurance Company, Master Policy Holder (Lessor) Dahn Corporation." Mel will review the policy.
Meeting adjourned at 12:40 P.M. Museum meeting immediately followed. Next meeting will be December 13 at the home of Mel and Gail LaGasca in Tracy.
