STOCKTON FANHS CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES FOR OCTOBER 2, 2004

PRESIDENT Mel La Gasca called the meeting to order at Dameron Hospital Conference Room B. Members present were Jenilee Sabado, Virginia Melear, Bob Cabigas, Virgie Navarro, Connie Pasquil, Letty Perez, Violet Dutra, and guests Linda Hib, Arlene Galindo, and Dennis Lee.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as distributed; amendments to be added in future if needed. M/S/P (Cabigas/Navarro).

OFFICER REPORTS:
PRESIDENT: Mel LaGasca reported that Little Manila is still waiting for their proposal to be voted upon by the City Council. He also stated that he went to a FILMAPS meeting this month to thank them for their help in past fund-raisers benefitting the FANHS museum.

Announcements: 1. Arlene Galindo, student at UOP, presented information of an event: "Soldiers as Students: The Legacy of the G.I. Bill" to be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2004, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Grace Covell Hall, University of Pacific. She is producing a cultural exhibit and would like to have the Filipino community represented. She is trying to reach World War II veterans who attended school on the G.I. Bill. The event includes memorabilia exhibits, guest speakers, lunch, and special presentations. Admission and lunch are FREE for WWII GI Bill Veterans and their spouses. Guest speaker is David Gerber. 2. Bahala Na is meeting this morning.

3. Linda Rivera from Sacramento sent an announcement that Sacramento/Delta FANHS and California State University-Sacramento Department of Ethnic Studies and Samahang Pilipino are presenting a mini conference entitled "Filipino Americans in the Heartland of California: A Conference on the Filipino American Experience" on Sunday, November 14, 2004 at the California State University-Sacramento Student Union, 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Conference sessions will include topics: Growing up Brown, Filipinos and Political Activism, Anti-Miscegenation Laws, Sec and the Single Pinoy, Oral History, Spoken Word, Filipino Professionals, Filipino Youth Culture and other subjects. The films "Silent Sacrifices"," Untold Triumph," and "The Game of Solitaire" will be screened.

4. Salinas is holding an event on October 12, 2004, at Hartnell College honoring the Filipino Counsel General from San Francisco. New books will be featured, including a book "The Continuing Saga of the Early Filipinos in America, which includes six stories written by Frank Perez, Stockton FANHS member. Letty will bring copies of the book to the October 16 Recognition event.

5. Jenilee Sabado and Linda Hib, of UOP's Kilusan Club, announced the third Annual Kilusan Pilipino High School Picnic to be held at Gardemeyer Field (east) at UOP on Saturday, October 16, 2004, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Purpose is "to provide a fun, educational, and social event amongst local high schools."

6. Dennis Lee distributed the October/November issue of the Asian Pacific American News & Review. He plans to focus on organizations within the community and encouraged us to submit an article to be included in the January, 2005 issue. The article needs to be submitted before November 15, 2004.

He also announced that a free bus and lunch are being provided for the third annual conference entitled "API Voters and Candidate Education Forum 2004" at California State University- Sacramento on October 3, 2004. The bus could be boarded at the Filipino Plaza at 10:15 a.m.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Violet Dutra reported a total membership of 164. During September there were two new senior members: Daniel and Virgie(Laniohan) Omalza. A get well card was sent to Ken Flowers following his heart bypass surgery. He is convalescing well.

ARCHIVES: Bob Cabigas reported that the storage facilities are being worked on. Virgie Melear brought out that there needs to be work done on organization of the literature, etc. No loans of items are being done at present. Copies are made and donations accepted for copying. We need to share, but borrowers are not to make a profit from the use of such items. Mel stated that he has a large photo exhibit donated by Dillon Delvo for the archives.

HISTORIANS: Unable to attend today.

WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE: Violet Dutra reported that sales of tickets are doing well for the October 16, 2004, Community Recognition Awards event. Mary Louise Lopez is requesting prizes for the raffles. There will also be door prizes.

The "MAGICAL NIGHT OF GIVING" fund-raiser for the museum fund is now in process. Members are urged to purchase or sell tickets at $5.00 each prior to November 19 for the special Weberstown shopping night on Sunday, November 21. All proceeds from sale of tickets will benefit the Museum Fund. Contact Violet Dutra at 462-3489 or Mary Louise Lopez at 463-3613. Tickets were distributed at the meeting to those present.

EXHIBIT COMMITTEE: Virgie Melear described how to prepare and run a FANHS exhibit. She displayed some of the items for display only or for sale. A list of the items being collected for the museum was distributed. (It is included in new member's packet, and can be viewed on the chapter's website.) A sign-up book is kept with the names of people attending, including family names. These are then placed in the archives. There is also a cash box, a price list, and a receipt book as part of the supplies for each exhibit. The use of freebies, such as pencils, to advertise FANHS was discussed.

BUSINESS:
Mel displayed an apron with Filipino farmer's logos from David Galbiso, FANHS member from New Mexico, which is an example that could be developed as educational and fund-raiser ideas. Mel donated one of the aprons for the archives.

The September 25th event "FANHS & Friends Appreciation Picnic" was held at Victory Park. Cost was $152.00 ($35.00 for rental fee for the area plus food and drinks). It was felt that this first picnic was a success and that there should be an annual appreciation picnic in the future.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:00 noon.

THERE WILL BE NO MEETING IN NOVEMBER. A POTLUCK/MEETING WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2004, AT 4:00 P.M. AT THE HOME OF VIRGINIA NAVARRO.
