Minutes for Meeting Saturday, October 6, 2007

Prior to the meeting, President Terri Torres and Vice President Anita Bautista presented the “Golden Lechon Award” to Mel LaGasca in recognition of his dedication to FANHS and the FANHS Museum Project. The award consisted of a certificate and a monkey-pod serving tray shaped like a pig. (See photo on last page.)
CALL TO ORDER
President Terri Torres called the meeting to order at 10:30 AM. The following members were present: Anita Bautista, Moreno Balantac, Deanna Balantac, Leatrice Perez, Beverly Engkabo, Anthony Engkabo, Mel LaGasca and Violet Dutra. Also present was guest speaker Baylan Megino.

New members include Esther Foronda, Kathrine Gapusan, Jovito Osorio, Sally Padre, Jaime Patena Ron Riberal, Carlena Padua Rowell, Adoracion Samson-Gable, Joe Talisayan, Carmen Gaerlon Tomek, and Vincent Ulep (all seniors).
A sympathy card was sent to Vera Rico and her family on the passing of her mother.
Violet reminded everyone of the increase in membership dues and distributed new membership brochures with the revisions.
Collections – Terri reminded those present of the need for a new chairman. Volunteers are urged to contact Terri.
Activities –Violet Dutra reported that the location for the 8th annual Community Recognition Awards Luncheon is set at China Palace Restaurant 5152 West Lane. Tickets have been distributed to various members to sell to others. She needs a ticket count by October 12 to submit a head-count to the restaurant. RSVPs are recommended, as limited tickets will be available at the door.
Deanna Balantac reported that the plaques were all done and she will give them to Terri to bring to the event.
Education/Exhibit --Anita Bautista reported that during the month of September she and Terri set up a FANHS exhibit at the Troke Library on “Filipino Americans--The Stockton Experience.” An exhibit was also put up in Chavez Library to accompany the showing of the documentary by KVIE on “Little Manila—Filipinos in America’s Heartland,” on October 6. There will also be a showing of the documentary at Troke Library on October 22, at 6:30pm.
During November there will be a FANHS exhibit in the Manteca library featuring veterans, and in December at the Tracy library featuring Pearl Harbor. In May 2008, Terri stated the library plans to invite Riz Raymundo to do a book signing.
Anita met with Filipino educators at SUSD and spoke about FANHS’ chapter activities; as a result Leatrice Perez was invited by her niece to speak at SUSD this month.
Terri announced that Carolyn Martin, a faculty member at CSU Stanislaus, has requested speakers to come to her nursing class to speak to them about Filipino culture in order to give proper care to their Filipino patients. Terri asked for volunteers and also had emailed out a request to the membership. So far, Elena Mangahas and Virginia Navarro volunteered. Letty said she knew someone who also might like to help and will email her.
A group contacted Anita Bautista for FANHS to participate in their upcoming “Day of the Dead” celebration. She referred them to the Filipino educators group/Virginia Navarro, but Anita prepared an “altar” just in case it was needed.
Historians—Moreno and Deanna Balantac brought the current history album for members to view. They are reminding members to continue contributing photos for the book so it can be kept updated.

Update on Arcadia Book and 2008 Calendar – Terri reported on the progress of the book. It is scheduled for publication early in 2008. She also reported on Dawn’s comments on the concerns that were brought up at the September meeting, and those in attendance were appeased. Terri also brought everyone up to date on the 2008 history calendar, which can now be pre-ordered from Little Manila through the internet. The committee will be meeting at 4 PM on October 8 to choose photographs. Order forms will be included in our October newsletter.
New Officers for 2008-2009: Nominations were opened for new officers. Letty Perez accepted nomination for Recording Secretary. No nominations were received for President, Vice President, or Treasurer. Members will be sent a nomination form to nominate officers and to return the form by Nov. 1st. The slate will be announced at the November meeting and election forms will be sent out in November for members to fill and return by December 10th, so that the new officers will be announced at the December Christmas party. New officers will begin at the January 5, 2008, meeting.
OTHER BUSINESS:
Our Voice Program: Terri announced that she, Anita, Mel and Letty were interviewed for the “Our Voice” program and it is airing through the month of October on Tuesday nights on Comcast channel 26 at 10pm. FANHS and the importance of preserving our history was the topic.
UOPKilusan student club contacted Terri by email regarding their annual High School picnic on October 13th and has asked us to support the event. A motion was made (M/S Deanna/Mel) to donate $25.00 as a form of advertising for FANHS. The motion passed. Terri will e-mail the club to follow through with this motion – to find out what kind of advertisement will be available and what the deadline for payment is.
Kilusan has also asked us to come and speak to one of their Tuesday night meetings. Anita and Terri agreed to speak and will contact Charlene Obille of Kilusan for more information.
Filipinas Magazine: Anita announced that her article “Sex and the Single Pinay” will be in the October issue of the Filipinas Magazine, but the title has been changed “Love in the Time of Taxi Dancers” which gives the article a different meaning. She’s waiting to read the article to see if Filipinas has changed it in any way.
Christmas/December Meeting: Mel and Gail LaGasca have offered their home for our annual Christmas Potluck/December meeting. It is tentatively scheduled for the second Saturday in December, 8th. Final plans will be announced at the November meeting.
