By Leatrice B. Perez, Recording Secretary

CALL TO ORDER

President Anita Bautista called the meeting to order at 10:25 A.M. Meeting was held in the Annex Building of Dameron Hospital.

Members present: Anita Bautista, Deanna Balantac, Moreno Balantac, Terri Torres, Violet Dutra, Leatrice Perez, Mel LaGasca, visitor National Trustee President Professor Joan May Cordova, and visiting students of Kilusan Pilipino of the Univ. of Pacific – Christine Obille, Michelle Lugar and Kyle Pace.

Before the meeting convened, Anita Bautista asked the students to introduce themselves after which they said they came to find out about FANHS events and projects and are interested in how they can participate, as well as informing us of their upcoming events. They said they have a “Barrio Fiesta” at UOP in November, and will give us dates later. Anita informed them of various projects in which they can help and participate, e.g. golf tournament in May; we need volunteers to visit the local cemeteries to list the veterans of the 1st and 2nd Infantries of World War II; volunteers are needed for various jobs in preparation for the museum and after the museum is in place. Mel LaGasca gave a brief explanation about the museum and the work involved and our fund raising projects. The students replied that if we contact them, they would like to help when they are available. They are usually busy with their college finals in December and March. We invited them to our Christmas party in December, which they said they had attended before. Anita excused them since they may have other places to go.

ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES

It was moved by Mel LaGasca and seconded by Terri Torres to approve the minutes as corrected after Anita Bautista informed us that the “Lechon” Pig award should read  “Golden Brown Lechon” Pig. Motion carried.

Activities Committee Report -- by Violet Dutra & Mary Louise Lopez

October 18, 2008, Recognition Awards -- ticket sales are slow—100 tickets have been distributed. As of October 3, we have received funds for 12 tickets sold ($360). Two complimentary tickets were sent to each honoree, except for the family of Larry Itliong, since we have not heard from any of his family members. Deadline date for ticket sales is Oct. 11, one week prior to event, to inform the restaurant on Monday, October 13th how many tables will be needed. Mary Louise appreciates all donations she has received for raffle prizes –could use rice and wine. A “thank you” letter will be written to Dean Perez, manager of the Elephant Bar Restaurant, for the donation of restaurant gift certificates as door prizes for the event. It was brought up whether or not to have background music playing during the event, while we’re eating. Should we? The members replied and agreed that we don’t need the music.

Deanna Balantac said that she has ordered the plaques for the awardees. She did not order a plaque for Larry Itliong since she has not received any acceptance notice from his family. A certificate will be made with his name and stored in our archives. Terri will also email the bios she received for Pilar Reynon and Nancy Andres to Deanna and Anita so additional information can be included. It was discussed that we should establish specific criteria for nominations of those to be honored. We should have those written before next year’s nominations.

Education/Exhibit -- by Anita Bautista

Anita said that the “Filipino American and the Zoot Suit” exhibit will remain on display in the Chavez Library through the month of October. She will send a “thank you” letter to Mary Jo Golke of the library for her assistance in allowing the displays. She worked with Lorenzo Romano on the articles and photos for the display in the lobby of the Bob Hope/Fox Theatre during the play of THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO. Anita said that she will present our chapter T-shirts to each of the actors of “MAGNO RUBIO” as a remembrance from us.

Historians --Moreno & Deanna Balantac

Moreno and Deanna reported that they had not received any new photos or items for the album this past month.

OLD BUSINESS

Anita said that we still do not have a COLLECTIONS chairman.

She showed us the first copy of the California Historian magazine we received from the Conference of California Historical Societies, University of the Pacific. It is reading material for our use and information. She also mentioned that the Cal. Hist. Society welcomes any written articles of historical interest we would like to contribute to their magazine.

On the subject of the FANHS Trustees meeting to be held in Stockton next year, Mel LaGasca reported that he sent notices to the Trustees on September 18 about the dates in June 2009. He mentioned that he received a group package from Jackson Rancheria, which includes a shuttle from Stockton, and he also looked at the Oak Grove Regional Park boathouse, which is an air-conditioned building, if we wanted to hold the meeting there. Prof. Joan May Cordova stated that the Cordova families are planning a reunion on July 24, 2009, in the San Francisco Bay area. She believes that if we plan the Trustees meeting around that date in July, Fred and Dorothy Cordova from Seattle and some of the others from the East coast and Southern California, would find it easier to attend the meeting since they will already be in the area, instead of planning another trip to Central California in June. Mel said that he and Moreno Balantac will reserve the Filipino Center Plaza conference room for the weekend Saturday 7/25 –Sunday 7/26. Joan May said that there are about 27 Trustees who would be coming.

Discussion followed on the National conferences for the next few years. Joan May reminded us that Seattle will hold the 2010 conference, but there are three FANHS Chapters who are vying for the year 2012. They are San Diego, Rio Grande and Stockton. She said that each chapter must submit their proposal giving significant historical background, plans for location, hotels, their purpose, and if other organizations will partner or assist them, etc.  The East coast will hold a Regional conference in New York in 2009. She met with Fred and Dorothy Cordova at FANHS Headquarters in Seattle and they suggested that Stockton has an option, a possibility to hold a conference in 2011 or contend for the 2012 slot or bid for both. Anita said that Central Valley and Sacramento Chapters said they will partner with us and Joan May said that we should include Little Manila in the planning of the conference. We will need to meet with Dawn Mabalon and others to formulate a plan to submit to National soon.

Regarding Use Fees for use of chapter photographs, Joan May reported that the Trustees developed a policy and she will send us a copy. The main point is to make sure that FANHS is in the byline and gets credit for any photo used.

NEW BUSINESS

This year’s Christmas party will be held on December 13 at 2:00 P.M. at Mel and Gail LaGasca’s home in Tracy.

The question was brought up regarding the 2009 Fil-Am history calendar that Little Manila was already pre-selling. Are we going to participate? We felt we should, but we need to meet with Little Manila to agree. Terri will e-mail Dawn Mabalon and ask her to meet with Anita Bautista.

Meeting adjourned at 12:20 P.M. Museum meeting immediately followed. Next meeting to be November 1, 2009 at Dameron Hospital’s Annex at 10AM.
