Summary of May 3, 2003, Film, "In No One's Shadow-Filipinos in America"

This 1/2 hour video presentation depicts the history of Filipinos as they immigrated first to Hawaii, then to the mainland. It describes how Filipinos arrived with so many dreams and aspirations, how some were affected by prejudices, and how they persevered to become accepted.


April 5, 2003 Presentation by Buster Villa "The Filipino Farm Movement in the USA"

Summary By Violet Dutra

Buster reviewed historically the movement of workers from the Philippines, to Hawaii, to the United States. He was able to document facts from several sources such as the US census and Fred Cordova's book "Forgotten Filipinos" and put them together with personal information to present an interesting and educational program. He also demonstrated how to cut asparagus and spoke of a typical day in the asparagus field and packing shed.


"Jose Rizal: The Man, The Hero, The Filipino" video on March 1, 2003

Adela Navarro donated the above video to our chapter archives. It is a documentary by Jose Bernard T. Capino. The film covered all aspects of Jose Rizal's life, from his boyhood home and life with his parents to his rise as a Filipino hero. It was very educational and enlightening.


"Filipinos in the Nursing Profession: History and Current Status" by Deanna Balantac presented Feb. 1, 2003

In front of an audience of 19 people, Deanna Balantac presented an overview of the reasons Filipino nurses were recruited to the US to fill the nursing shortages over the years. She covered the years from just after WWII to the present, focusing on the characteristics of each period of nursing shortages and the corresponding characteristics of the Filipino nurses being recruited. Deanna is Professor Emeritus, Division of Nursing at CSU Sacramento, and has taught nursing here in the US as well as in the Philippines. It was a very educational and enlightening presentation.
