Subject: [at-l] an ear, a goat, two dates

A year ago today had me, Sundown, Lucky Luke and Calamity Jane hiking
from Wilson Creek to Cloverdale. We ate at the AYCE buffet at the
closest AYCE buffet place. We laffed until we hurt. (Sundown is
accidentally hilarious) That evening had one of the funniest scenes of
my trip: Sundown, Calamity Jane, Lucky Luke and I were in a room at the
motel, watching NFL. Machu Picchu knocks on the door and comes in and
talks to us for about 15 minutes. I hadn't seen him since Blackrock Hut.
After he left, I looked at Sundown and asked, "Who was that guy?" The
look Sundown gave was priceless. "Priceless" I say.

Anyway, let's back it up a few more days. I started hiking with Sundown
at the Priest. I forgot to tell you that was the shelter we were staying
in when we watched the meteor shower from the pic-a-nic-type table. We
then spent nights together at Brown Mt., John's Hollow, Thunder Hill
(where I met LL and CJ for the first time since Story Spring in VT.
Also, Sundown made Lipton meals using beer because the water supply was
dry.)  Bryant Ridge, (where the man and his dog came in at about 11:30,
scaring the bejesus out of us. 11:30 is like 2:30a.m. to normal people.
He turned out to be a really nice guy. The next a.m., he said, "If I
knowed you was here, I'dve brought you some killer vittles.") Wilson
Creek and then Cloverdale. While in Cloverdale, we also had the pleasure
of 'hangin' with woodelf. Always a good time being with one of old man
Davidson's boyz.

This will be a good week of memories. Well, at least for me...

Whatcha mean "I left u out, what gives?".  I could not add u to the Name/e-mail list until u said it was okay, right?
Explanation: I send msgs to some persons that do NOT want their e-mail published, that is one of the reasons u will not see who I send the msgs to because I use BCC: to send to all the persons & the msg is TO: FannyPack, also this means that persons receiving the UPDATE msgs can NOT do a REPLYALL to sent to everyone that I sent the msg to, hope u understand my reasoning.

So u maintain a section near Andover, do u know Honey & Bear at The Cabin????

Hope to see yall up there in ME sometime in the near future...

If u have e-mails for any 99ers (not on the list) that u think would like to receive these updates, pls let me know.

NOTE: are u kin to The Old Fhart - 98GA2ME??? U both have a "unique" personality & disposition, of course, I believe some 99ers, like Fleishmann may use some other descriptive words when describing your personality & disposition...

Have a great Thanksgiving......

Subject: [at-l] A.T. in Maine
Date: Wed, 24 Nov 1999 10:31:42 EST

In a message dated 11/23/99 11:42:23 AM Eastern Standard Time,
lwbooher@evansville.net writes:

<< Did y'all read the letter from Earl Shaffer in the new ATN?  He was talking
about how "the rocks, roots, mud holes, and stream wadings now prevalent
are a disgrace" in Maine, and how he'll "never hike there again".  How did
this strike y'all?  My thoughts were that the rocks and roots above ground
are the result of so many happy hikers compressing the dirt around them.
He goes on and on about how the route had been laid out and shelters built
years ago, but where are they now?  Has the trail in Maine been moved a lot
over the years?  Does anyone know what he's talking about >>

At the ATC meeting this past weekend at Harpers Ferry, I raised the above
issue with a member of MATC.  He actually agreed with much of what Earl had
to say.  He pointed out that much of the Trail in Maine used to be on private
land, and that when the NPS land acquisition program began, it was necessary
-- in pretty short order -- to come up with the "ideal" route so that the NPS
could purchase the necessary land.  In most cases, an excellent route was
mapped, but there were -- as might be expected -- some mistakes.  Moreover,
the new Trail was rather hastily constructed, with not enough effort invested
into switchbacks and other similar features that improve the footpath and
lessen erosion.  As a result, there are indeed a number of spots where there
are the "rocks, roots, [and] mud holes" that Earl is complaining about.  He
told me that MATC hopes to do some work in the next few years to improve the
Trail and eliminate these problem spots by constructing switchbacks and other
improvements.

None of this is intended to detract from the wonderful work done by the
MATC, which maintains many miles of the A.T. through the State of Maine by
the hard work of relatively few volunteers.  Indeed, it is through their
devoted work that the new Trail route was made possible.  It seems that they
are aware of the problem and will do whatever they reasonably can to correct
it.
