Yes, I did hike with Wrangler for about a month before
we split up.  Pilgrim was hit by a car in Tn./Nc and
broke both legs and his hip.  He did not finnish the
trail due to this acccident.  Keel finnished friday
Nov.19.  A large group has finnished including Duct
Tape, Warren, Alpine, Stilly, Geo, Pixie, Crocket, Big
Foot, Otter, Daniel Boone, Bonzai, Wrangler, Doc
Alley, and others I never really meet.

Hi Fanny Pack and hikers,
Nice job.
I'm trying to locate Rooster '98 - the vet from Pennsyvania. His old E Mail
was Mnagel1630 but he apparently has changed. I saw him at the Gathering in
NH and have a message for him
Anyone have his current address?
Cheers,

We got three pieces of snail mail yesterday from trail friends (Quik and
NoTime, Potts, Alaska) and noticed that 2 of them had new addresses.  This
made us think that we dont have snail mail addresses for all of you and that
the ones we have may be outdated. We would appreciate if you could pass
yours along.

Also I would like to get email and/or snail mail addresses for Badger (mike
robinson I believe) from Tennessee and Stick (paul) from SC.

Bye for now

Subject: Happy Thanksgiving

Hi Fannypack,
Just wanted to send you greetings from Gorham. The last few days have been unseasonably hot but tomorrow we expect temps below freezing. All the snow that had been in the mts has melted.
All the AT hikers have gone and many have stopped by on their way back from Katadhin.
Now it's quiet until the next hiker season starts.
Once again, happy turkey day and a big hug to your wonderful dad.
Take care,
Mary Ann, Bruno, Bruce and Adam up at Hikers Paradise,Gorham, NH

Subject: AT in Maine

This is a little response to the discussion concerning the toughness of the
trail in Maine....My thoughts are as follows:

1. If the trail in Maine were made easier, wouldnt we have more foot
traffic by more people who really dont need to be there in the first place?

2. If the roots, rocks, and mud keep you from finishing the trail(unless
injured) then you either didnt want it bad enough or you just did too much
yellow blazing and arent in the shape you should be in.

The hike through Maine(for Northbounders) is the final test. Yes, I did my
fair share of bitching while going through it, but I would do it over and
over and over if need be.
I think, if anything, we should encourage the physical and mental
fortitude it reqiures to accomplish a hike on the AT. Maybe we should make
some sections a little tougher.....it sure would keep the crowds and the
walking idiots away...:)

   Remember...this is just my opinion.

Love to all,
Guided by Voices

Hey fanny pack:

well, i'm back at work after a wonderful thanksgiving with friends.  Thanks
to all that stopped over.  We've still got turkey, so if anyone else wants
to come up, let us know!!

Goldilocks, Too Hot to Handle, Sy, Baltimore Jack, Semper Fi, Last Exit,
Woodpecker, Doc, Fleishmann, Funk That, Disco, and Jester (I hope i didn't
leave anyone out)  joined us for some portion of the weekend.  Fast Eddie in
Reverse (still hiking south) was with us as well.

Take care...maybe we'll have a new years party.  Does anyone know what's
going on with bristlecone's y2k party?

Hi all,

I've updated my web site through July 31.  It had been stalled on July 17
for a couple of months.  I already have August and September typed up but I
still have to put them in html format.  With any luck, that will happen very
soon.

Subject: [at-l] "The Place"
Date: Tue, 30 Nov 1999 18:43:58 -0700

"The HOSTEL, known as "The Place" is owned and operated by the Damascus
United Methodist Church. "The Place" is now in its twenty-fourth
consecutive year serving hikers and bikers on the Appalachian Trail, The
National Transcontinental Bike Trail, and the Virginia Creeper Trail. It is
estimated that at least thirty to forty thousand people from all over the
United States and many foreign countries have spent one or more nights
there, and for the past three or four years, more than two thousand have
registered each year."
http://www.damascus.org/trailservices/hostel.htm

Well "The Place" is in need of our assistance now.  The church needs
$20,000.00 to refurbish "The Place".  A donation of $5 from each list
member will add up to a tidy donation.  Since where all backpackers I
believe this to be a worthwhile cause to support?

The Ruck is sponsoring a raffle to raise monies for "The Place".
Each raffle ticket is $5, ALL monies go to "The Place", and so far the
below listed items are the prizes.
A week for TWO of supported hiking from our favorite slackpacker, Richard
Mann, AKA Pittsburgh and Hike USA. - Value $800
http://www.hike-usa.com/
An Ultralight NomadLight backpacking tent from Kurt Russell & Wanderlust Gear
Value $250
A never used MountainSmith MountainLight 4000 backpack with carbon stays
weight 3lbs 1oz donated by a darlin' daughter in honor of her Mom, who died
from cancer before she could realize her dream of thru hiking. - Value $299
A 30 item sampler of trailfood donated by Enertia Trail Foods - Value $60

So in addition to supporting a worthwhile cause you could also win one of
these prizes.

Tickets will be $5 each.
Checks to be made out to Damascus UMC Hostel.
Mail checks to:
John O'Mahoney
40 Lenape Trail
Brick, NJ 08724
Put Ruckfund in the memo space.
All checks must be accompanied by a

Deadline is December 15, 1999 for receiving checks for raffle.

Fanny Pack!
I need your help! I am Migh-"T" GA to ME "99! I am looking for e-mail and/or home addresses/phone numbers of FEMALE thruhikers who are willing to share some of their trail stories with me. I am trying to put them together so women thinking of making the trek will have a better guide for them exclusively. I know I had a lot of trouble finding gender-specific info when I was planning my hike last year.
Thanks A lot!

hey fanny pack, how the hell are  you?  Doing well here after a joyous
Thanksgiving.  I thought that the best way for me to collect everyone's
addresses was to go on your mailing list.  I have attached an older message
below explaining what is going on.  Hope all is well with you.

Hello Everyone!  How has life been treating everyone after the trail? I have
managed to keep myself more then busy, attempting to bring myself out of
debt.  Hense, why this letter took me two months to compose.

I'm sending this letter out in attempts to collect all of the addresses of
the class of 1999.  I am not looking for through-hikers, but rather all the
hikers that gave it their all, whether they made it to Damascus, Duncannon,
or Katahdin.  Once the data base is compiled, I can use it for the
gargantuan reunion that I plan on throwing in 2004, somewhere in Colorado
(so mark your calendars :-) ).  This list will also go to Zip-Drive for his
efforts in calaberating a yearbook for 1999. So send this to all of our
trail family, and cc a copy to me.

I hope all of you are all doing well, drop me a note and fill me in on your
everchanging lives.  For those of you which are not attending the
Thanksgiving bash in Killington (at the new house of magnolia, Pale-Rider,
Gruff, and myself), I wish you all the best over the hectic holidays.  Keep
in touch.  802.422.2333
