Did any of the thru-hikers here take the Maryland Challenge? If so, how
long before you were hiking average-mile days (for you) again? Was it
worth it?/Would you do it again?

Some of you know I just did 4.5 days with Ron hiking in the Shenandoah
National Park. I've just put up about 30 pictures from that trip. Please
keep in mind that these have been scaleddown and furthere compressed
since space is at a premium on my web pages. I'm sure some compression
artifacts can be seen and some detail is lost since the photos were
originally 1600x1200 instead of the 640x480 they are on the web page.

Subject: warm wine in cold munich

Hello!  Hello!  How are you?
Well the tour of Europe has continued although a bit differently than planned.  After leaving Brussels, we spent a few nights in Brugge with a wonderful couple who are members of Servas.  The town is verz quaint and the beer and chocolate were absolutely amazing!!!  Our next stop was Amsterdam!!  What an interesting city!!  The red-light district was shocking and the smell of marijuana omni-present!!!  We visited an island town in Holland as well which was much more peaceful than the big city!  Our plan was then to go to Ireland, but this is where things became a bit jumbled!!  We had to take a series of four trains to the northwest corner of France where we would catch the overnight ferry to Ireland.  Well, as luck had it, the last train was canceled 5 minutes before it was to depart.  A taxi ride was an unfathomable 225 dollars, and the next ferry didn't leave for 3 days.  We decided to forgo Ireland and opt for Switzerland.  We hopped a night train and awoke in the serene mountains on a sunny Sunday morning.  After making a telephone booking at a lodge in the mountains, we proceeded to the ATM machine which decided not give us any money.  We proceeded to try 3 other machines but had no success!!  Well, by this time we were frustrated beyond belief and decided to head back to a friend's house in Germany where we could rest and regroup.  We are now near Munich enjoying Christmas markets where they serve a warm wine punch and many other yummy food creations.  Tomorrow, we're going to visit a castle built by Ludwig in the 1800s.  Then it's off to Vienna!1  We hope you are enjoying the onset of the holiday season!!
love laurie and scott

Hey Fannypack

I have completed my relocation to Hanover,NH. It's a big change from North Georgia!!! things are looking good.  I have converted from Sweet southern tea to STRONG HOT COFFEE. Haven't had grits in weeks. It's a gradual conversion. Still can't stomach the thought of putting milk in tea yet.  Somethin just ain't right about that. :)

Spent Thanksgiving in Killington at Creepers Wayside. Had a great time with all the 99'ers that showed up. No plans for Xmas at this time. Might spend that weekend up on a mountain top somewhere. At some point in time the locals assure me there will be snow up here. I'm getting sceptical. I never expected to have Thanksgiving this far North and be experiencing a heat
wave. Hmmm.. global warming, cow belching, el ninapoop.

Well gotta go keep in touch.

Subject: (Final?)Update

hello all
this could very well be the last update until i'm home, the 18th is creeping up fast and we are going to be on the trail for the rest of the way, so i don't know about getting online again after tonight.  Right now i'm at Newfound Gap in the smokies and due to weather we took another day off in town today but will be back tomorrow.
We all want to slow down and not leave the trail but we know we all have  to....in a sense.

my one real wish that i have thought about since day ONE out here on this trail was that my girlfriend, Meg, could come and meet me at Springer when i finish, and for the longest damn time i've dreamt about watching the sunset with her on the mountain.  but, as it has happend so many times before, yet another nail was driven into a coffin and she is now not allowed to be there.  heartbroken, yes, but i'll survive and will in the end come out on top- and my family will still be there and i am happy for that.  but i didn't really want to stand at the end of the trail and be bitter, i guess i'd better get used to it....

other than this matter i've vented (slightly) about all is well and we are moving fast with the end in sight, i can't believe i've been out for almost 6 months, it certainly is not long enough.....
later

FP,

A quick update on me......

It is Tuesday morning the 7th of December and I in one and half hours will be on a plane headed to Florida for a couple of days and then I am flying out of Miami to Costa Rica for about six weeks to hike and mountaineer, kayak and white water raft some of the rivers, and hopefully relax on a beach or two in the down time.  I am scouting the place out for a possible
sight for the Adventure program I worked for this past summer because we are looking for an international sight, and to have fun in the gem they call Costa Rica.

Presently, the last month or so,I have been up in Maine at Sunday River working and will return there after my trip.  French Fry is there too and will be working at a restaurant at the Grand Jordan hotel.

Since I'll be gone during the holidays I wanted to wish all thru-hikers I've met and those I haven't had the opportunity to have yet, the best holiday season and a kick ass New Year.

Hope to see you all in the year 2000, with the spirit that brought us together in "98"

Peace and greatness to all,
Sightseer.."98"

Hey FannyPack,

I know that I have sent out quite a few disks with my photos on it to people I have hiked with, family, and friends over the last few days.

I have also placed my photojournal from my hike at http://www.brooks.kelley.net/photo/index.htm for everyone to see. Of
course, the disk version is a little faster.

Wish it had music like Wingfoot's photo page, but, alas, I have not gotten around to that yet.

Feliz Navidad y Prospero Ano,

Mr. Boo '99

P.S. For those who hike with Orion, he has placed a collage series of photos of his AT hike on the net at http://www.bitniz.com/bill/
