Hello! How are you? Our wonderful tour
is continuing. After leaving Munich, we spent 3 nights in
Vienna with a most excellent Servas host!!
We viewed
some wonderful historical sights, listened to good music and shopped
and ate!! We are now in Budapest and loving it!! It's a huge
city with a lot of character. The food is excellent and
our Servas host keep us very well fed. Our hosts have three
wonderful children and have kept us well entertaind for 3
days!!! Scott has been climbing in indoor gyms, and I've been shopping
at outdoor markets. Yes it's a bit backwards as usuallly one climbs
outside and shops inside. That's just the culture here I
guess! Next stop--Switzerland
love laurie and

didnt know that
This year will be the first full moon to occur on the
winter solstice, Dec.22, commonly called the first day of winter.
Since a full moon on the winter solstice occurred in conjunction with a lunar
perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth) The moon will
appear about14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in it's elliptical
orbit that is farthest from the Earth) since the Earth is also several
million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year than in the summer,
sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger making it brighter.
Also,
this will be the closest perigee of the Moon of the year since the moon's orbit
is constantly deforming. If the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where
you live, it is believed that even car headlights will be
superfluous. On December 21st. 1866 the Lakota Sioux took advantage of
this combination of occurrences and staged a devastating retaliatory ambush
on
soldiers in the Wyoming Territory.
::::::::In laymen's terms,
it
will be a super bright full moon, much more than the usual AND it hasn't
happened this way for 133 years!
Our ancestors 133 years ago saw this.
Our descendents 100 or so years from now will see this. But we get to see
it in 2 weeks! Now how cool is
that?

Stranded hikers find

By Kera Ritter, Boston
Globe Staff, 12/13/99
Two hikers emerged safely from a trail on Mount
Washington yesterday morning after driving snow and 125-mile-an-hour wind gusts
forced them to spend the night under railroad tracks.

Met SlipKnot at Tray Mountain, he's hurrying to finish
by Wednesday, the 15. Left the larger group hoping to finish the
18th. Hitched a ride with Jacques D'Amboise a couple days ago to Franklin,
NC. In the car were Hyper and Jacques' son. Says Jacques had hiked 5
miles that day, was going back to Wesser to hike a section the next
day. SlipKnot mentioned that "Step-by-Step" as he's known on the
Trail plans to hike "around 1000" miles of the AT.
Check out the website:
http://www.ndi4all.org for
more information, especially the "in the news" section.
Scuttlebutt at
WalasiYi is that a CNN crew will be at Springer the 18th to see Jacques
D'Amboise.

Please note that the phrase PUDS was
changed by unanimous unvote of the class of 1999 sobos (southbounders) to SPUDS
(stupid pointless ups and downs). The state of ME was nominated and affirmed as
the king of the SPUDS. It was noted in the official record that objection was
raised by the peak-baggers because they thought the phrase degraded their
sport.

Hey There All!
I crossed over
my last state line two days ago! GEORGIA! We are all glad to be here
but sad that our journey is coming to a close. I will be summiting
Springer on the 17th and spending the night on top, then I'll hang out on the
18th as the mega flow of southies stream up the mountain. Anyone is
welcome at the party on the 18th at Springer, show up early before all
the
food and drinks are gone! Next time I write it will be from
home!
Later.

Howdy everybody!
I'm so glad to see Ren Man is
back from Mongolia safe and sound. How's the yak over there? How's
Buttercup and Nordica?
I am no longer such a faithful checker of email,
since I quit my cush job at Corning and moved out to Whitefish, MT with my
boyfriend! Whitefish is 30 miles west of Glacier National Park and 60
miles south of Canada. The town is on a lake in a valley, surrounded by
large mountains. I'm loving it! I moved out here in November with my
boyfriend. Dwayne works as a snowboard instructor, and I got a job at Big
Mountain (ski hill)in the Events Departments. We set up races and run the
registrations, timing, etc. This last weekend we hosted the Telemark U.S.
Open. It was very cool! I get to ski and go to ski parties as part
of my job. While the pay checks have decreased drastically, my quality of
life has increased 10 zillion times.
Gi Jane and Frenchy live out in
Whitefish too. They moved here in February. We see them all the
time. We went to go see the new Tom Hanks flick, Green Mile, then had them
over for dinner last night. Frenchy works from home designing sprinkler
systems for his old company back in Wisconsin. Gi Jane is looking for a
job after spending the summer hiking in the Appalachians with troubled
teens.
So that is the scoop on me and friends in Whitefish. I would
love to be in Grayson with ya'll over New Years, but I'm not going to make
it. Certainly, you are all invited out here if you can swing it.
There's always room for more. I'd love to see you all. My new info

What about Jardine's pack. The medium,

I just
asked Santa for the Large for Christmas... Mrs Clause is really worried that I
might be ready for another long distance hike. I recently broke abone in my foot
and can't walk 100 feet without pain, so no hiking in my near
future!
