Hey FannyPack,
Always enjoy reading over
your updates. This is a link to an article that recently appeared in the
Chicago Tribune about Dr. Bronner and his son of Dr. Bronner's soap fame.
I thought some hikers might be interested.

Well, that's it.
I hit Springer
Mountain at 7:00pm on Dec. 17th and spent the night on top. Came down to
meet up with my Mom, Dad, my brother and my cousin on the 18th and had a blast
at the cookout thanks to Chacco's family. Close to 30 southbounders finished
that day and with all the friends and family around the parking area was a zoo!
Got lots of great pictures and video of the day
too. The party started
breaking up around 6pm and after climbing Springer again with my Dad and Brother
we started for home. Stopped around (midnight?) at a motel for the night and
woke early this morning and made it home around 3pm or so and was greeted by
friends and family welcoming me home. Nice.
I can't be happier with my
trip, every moment I was out there I was free and felt totally at home.
The friends I've made over the past 6 months feel even closer than family to me
at times and I will miss all of them.
Thanks to everyone who helped with my
trip and everyone who helped me out along the trail.
Until the next
adventure.....
Later,

Hey
Fannypack. That stinks about Pilgrim. He'll be alright. I was hoping you could
help me relay a message since you have such a widespread connection. I want to
create a compilation of stories from '99 thru-hikers.
Some basic topics
are:
1) best and worst hitch,
2) trail magic,
3) crazy animal
experiences,
4) bizarre experiences with locals or day-hikers,
4) and
anything else that would entertatin or enlighten.
I'm open to any
suggestions. Thank you so much. I look forward to hearing from you
soon.

Subject: Trip update
Hello all. This may
be my last email that I send while blister-free, so I want to take the time now
to sincerely thank everyone who has wished me well on this journey.
Here
are my most recent trip departure plans:
29 December, late pm - Get on
the Greyhound in either Cleveland or Maple Heights, Ohio. I'm planning on
a late night bus ride so I can hopefully sleep through it. Why a
bus? Well, a bus will take me closer to the trailhead than the Atlanta
airport, it's cheaper, I may not be able to bring my stove's fuel on a plane,
and no chance of lost or damaged backpack.
30 December, late afternoon -
Arrival in Gainesville, Georgia. Then I will be shuttled (don't know
how/whom yet) to Amicalola Falls State Park. I'll sign in at the ranger
station, weigh my pack on the scale, take a couple pictures, and proceed to the
first shelter at the start of the AT approach trail. Once there I will eat
one of my mega-heavy canned dinners.
31 December, early morning - Eat my
remaining mega-heavy canned meal. It's an 8.8 mile hike to the top of
Springer Mountain where the AT starts. I will spend New Year's Eve at the
Springer Mountain shelter quite possibly with a few other thruhikers.
01
January, early morning - Start my first full day on the AT. Whoo
Hoo!
