     Hello Fanny Pack,
Thanks for your E-mails. I thought I would tell you a little bit
about my hike in '96:
I started on April 20 @ Springer, originally hoping to go one-way to Maine, but soon realized that I was slow enough that I would have to flip-flop. So I decided to do a 3-way fl.-fl. so that I could still be going north in New England. On June 26 I reached Pearisburg, VA and then jumped up to Williamstown, MA, where I continued hiking north on July 3. I reached
Katahdin on September 6, then went back to W'town and started south on sept. 10. I finally finished up back in Pearisburg on December 14! I was one of the slowest hikers of the '96 season, but, from what I understand, not quite the last one.
The southbounders that were with me when I finished were Top Dog and Hamburgler. They were going to stay in P'burg for the night, and had planned to make Damascus by Christmas, and finish @ springer later in the winter. I never heard from them again; does anyone know if they made it okay?
If anybody knows about them, i'ld like to hear. And also, Mako + Prowler, 2 other southbounders who were with me, touch + go, from Ma. to the Shen. Nat. Park. They got off at Rusty's for a few days, + they never caught up with me again, so I'ld like to know what happened to them as well. Any info would be appreciated.
Well, Ive got some other E-mail to catch up on, so I'm outa here!
Good modulating with you. Catch you later!

Earle Townes will be dropping off Mr. Clean at the A.T. Lodge tommorow.  Mr. Clean will begin his southbound hike from Abol Bridge (too many hurdles to jump to try to 'officially' start in Baxter) on New Years Day.  God Speed Mr. Clean.

NOTE from FannyPack: this Mr Clean, 97GA2ME, was pictured in Backpacker, Dec '98 edition.  Great guy, look for him on his southbound journey.

Hey Fannypack,

Thank you for remembering us southbounders!  That "cooler with legs" was such a blessing that I forgot about my frozen boots the morning I saw it.  It was also nice to look at the register and find out who was still behind us.  What a great idea!  Thanks.

Can you please change your master e-mail list. Thanks. Everything here is going fine. Laurel is pregnant and is due sometime in early June. We have done a fair amount of hiking in Harriman. In
October we camped up by Fingerboard Shelter and ran into "Jukebox" 98' who was finishing her hike. Hope all is well.

Best wishes to everybody for the new year!

Date: Sun, 2 Jan 2000 15:46:05 -600

I am hoping to hike from Glencliff thru Katahdin starting in mid-may. I understand the whites can be pretty messy that time of year and I am hoping to get some suggestions! Will I need full, rigid crampons, snow shoes, ice axe??? I have never been on the AT in the whites and although I have hiked in the snow quite a bit, I have never hiked in the snow above treeline in the Whites! So, if  you could give me some hints, they would be appreciated. Also, that will put me in the maine woods early to mid june... is that a problem? Thanks for your  help.
Happy hiking! Steve "Rabbit" Krake GA->Glencliff NH 99.

PS. for those of you who hiked with me last spring, it was a blast! Drop me a note and I can fill you in about the mishap that took me off the trail. I hate Spyderco knives!

Hello!  Hello!  How are you?  We had a wonderful holiday season here in Europe!!  We spent Christmas and New Years with a friend in Switzerland in a wonderful mountain town with lots and lots of beautiful snow!!!  We enjoyed a wonderful day of cross-country skiing and a couple days of hiking as well as beautiful displays of fireworks shimmering over the mountain snow!!  We are now in Rome which is an absolutely amazing city!!!  The history here is never-ending!  Today, we visited the colliseum, the vatican city and St. Peter's Basilica, the Forum, and the Pantheon.  The gelati is just as good as it was this summer even though it's a bit cooler outside.
Next stop: Sicily and Mt. Etna!
We'd love to hear from you!

Happy New Year everyone. Congratulations. It was great to see all of you on the 18th at Springer. I wish I could of hung out longer but unfortunately I had another commitment. I just wanted to inform all '99 thru-hikers that I'm putting together a compilation of short stories from this year's hike. I want all the entertaining stories involving hitches, town occurrences, trail magic, strange encounters w/ locals, animal encounters, and anything else that would add some spice to this collection. If everyone contributes something, I know we can have something special. I'd love to get it published. But first things first. Ya'll need to organize your thoughts into a composition and send them my way via e-mail or mail.

Subject: RE: 2002 Southbounder couple wants feedback from southbounders

David,

Thank you for your note.  I appreciate your effort both in generating responses and respecting people's privacy. I hope I didn't step on any toes or anything.  Judging from the sheer volume (and content) of AT-L (digest) it is a very active list with lots of topics being discussed. I just can't invest the time to be as active as some (Felix, coosa).  But if there is a cadre of SOBOs that are willing to be prodded (gently) with my inquiries now and then through e-mails I am certainly looking forward to it.  I am not sure if they, the secret society of southbounders, will get this (reply to all to BCCs?).  Here is more of an introduction anyway.

Everybody else (?),

My name is Brian, posted on AT-L a couple weeks back.  Planning on hiking Me->Ga in 2002 with my fiancée (then wife). I know this is early for planning but I am so excited.  Besides with y2k over, know I can buy corn pasta real cheap (I've got a driveway to pave).  We have a limited time frame in which to hike, only about 4 months.   We know we are looking at some higher mileage days than most hikers.  Right know we are thinking about pace and are exploring a couple of options if you have thoughts on these please chime in.

The lightweight plan -  we have been working at really reducing packweight with ideas gleaned from Jardine and others to come up with a system that will work for us.  Did anybody significantly reduce their packweight (or increase toward the end) and what effect did it have on your hike? Also, sneakers?

Mileage - Interested in finding out how your pace changed over the hike (?) We were thinking of starting out medium for the first 2-3 weeks and then ramping up about 25-30%, and maybe again for the mid-atlantic states, and then slowing down a little in the south.

Alternative strategies - Have been thinking about the "dog days of summer" and ways to extend the miles in those long days.  Night hiking, early starts, afternoon naps, hiking after cooking.

Don't want to make this too long.  Please don't think I am trying to distill anyone's thruhike experience into useful tidbits, I realize that a thruhike is much more than daily mileage.  I just want to get info to make the experience possible, once that is done I'll just let the experience happen.

dreaming,
-Brian E. Banta

Hello Fannypack...
Greetings from Maine.   Thankyou for thinking of us.  Unfortunately we didn't finish the AT this year.   We got off in Bland, VA.on Nov 5th, after just 4 months on the trail.   We started July lst.   In hindsight, we should have holed up in a motel for a few days and regrouped.  But the good news is that we have plane tickets all set to go back on the trail.  We will be
starting at Springer Mt on April lst and finishing in Bland, VA.  We will then rent a car and drive back to trail days to see all our fellow hikers. :)   Will you be at trail days. After trail days, we will go to the Roanoke airport and catch a flight home.  Also, being retired, that we are, we drove down to Springer thurs and fri of Dec to see our friends summit Springer on
saturday,  Dec 18th.  What a thrill.   We loved hiking it was such an adventure and journey.   My husband,  Dave, is considering continuing on the trail after Bland, VA  onto ME.   He will make that decision in VA

You may or may not have received a message from hyper about a web site created by Zip Drive.
I would recommend you check out the web page she mentions:

www.trailjournals.com.

The site has a listing of about 500 thru hikers from 1999. There are pictures of many of them and info about their hike. Also there are many addresses and email addresses.

Zipdrive is protecting privacy for those who so wish.  I was very impressed wit what I found there and was able to locate people I was looking for like Badger and Bagel.
