Subject: [at-l] Weekend Hike
Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2000 16:13:45 -0500

Yo,
I walked from 311 to 220 this weekend. Tinker Ridge is always a nice hike, a good one for my first hike of the year. the piles of dry leaves were up to waist deep. It sure made a lot of noise when I plowed thru them.  I camped in a high spot overlooking the Daleville/ Interstate 81 valley. I saw a bunch of meteorites last night. A little bit of sleet early in the night, then clear skies. The rain started after breakfast and followed me all the way to my truck.

From Flutterby's mother,
Hi Fannypack, we enjoy receiving your messages from the hikers, especially the 98' hikers that were here in Skowhegan for our Pig Roast.  Please tell all those we know and met at our home we wish them, as well as you,a very happy and healthy New Year.  It's fun hearing about Mr. Clean as we met him last summer when he went to work for our neighbor  checking trees in the very area  he is now hiking in the snow up here in Maine.  He is in our thoughts on these cold nights. Tonight, Jan. 13th, the windchill factor is about 20 below zero. Hope he is cozy and warm in a shelter, better yet in someone's home.  We have no snow in Skowhegan, have had only 3" so far this winter, the mts. are making snow for the skiers and we wonder when we will get the "big storm".  Would love to hear from any of the 98' hikers. Our email is mailto:evyb@kynd.com   You all come visit us anytime.
Fondly, Evalyn Bowman

Greetings from the summit of Mt. Washington! The sky is clear but the temp hit -31 degrees and the winds have been 117 mph which makes the windchill about 4 million below or some figure equally meaningless. I've decided to stay inside today and see if I can help the obresvatory get rid of the excess inventory of Little Debbie snack cakes. I did get some pictures yesterday when the temp was a mild zero with 40 mph winds but even then every inch of skin was covered so I didn't get frostbite. Today it wouldn't be a bite it would be a big chomp!
Have a nice day, Richard, Dick, The Old Fhart, or TDD

Hola from Costa Rica,

-quick update-

I'm in the final hours, 33, to be exact, of my journey here in Costa Rica.  It has been an incredible experience and revival of my spirit and soul.  I have climbed to 12,596', I guess my head was at 12,600+ though, it still seemed pretty high, the highest peak in CR., Mt. Chirripo.  I had the chance to swim in epic surf on some incredibly beautiful tropical beaches.  Slop through the mud and bugs of four different tropical rain forests, spying howler monkeys, white face monkeys, spider monkeys, poison dart frogs, a spectrum of colors in the birds and butterfly world, sloths, and more lizards and iguanas than you can count, but it is now coming to and end.  It was the fastest five+ weeks I've spent anywhere.  This place is so green, it is truly amazing.  I saw Christmas and New Year's pass here and didn't miss a thing.  Both holiday periods on different tropical beaches was a new, but rewarding experiences.  I fly out on the 15th to Fl. then back Maine, and winter, a few days after a short in FL.  I hope all of you are well and the first fifteen days of the new year have been healthy. Until then, Godspeed, be free, and most of all, happy.....

-Dave, Sightseer

Subject: Mr.Clean

Greetings from a very cold Maine!
We had a call from Mr.Clean this morning and he arrived in Monson last night ( the 14th ).  He is staying at Shaw's and plans on taking a day off and heading south on Sunday ( the 16th).  He said he would be visiting the Pie Lady before he
leaves town.  I told him that people had sent e-mail here and I had forwarded it the Pie Lady.
We were concerned about Mr.Clean as the last couple of nights the temp. has been below 0 and the chill factor has dropped to 40 below.  He had a hard time climbing up Chairback Mt. and spent a very cold night at Cloud Pond Shelter.  Even
with the cold Mr.Clean is having a grand time and was in excellent spirits when Glenna and I talked with him this morning.  We will keep him in our prayers as he continues south.

Hello Fanny Pack, good to hear from ya and see that you are still involved in the good old AT. Yes, please add my name and address to your list and keep me on your other lists as well.  I plan to start around the 15th -18th of March this year. So far, I hear that Balt. Jack, TBA, Lone Wolf, Slyman, will be starting the second or third week of March also.  Thanks for the great photos you sent me about six months ago. I am looking forward to this coming year, I hope to see you out there again, if you have the time. I will try to stay in touch a little better, now that I know how to do the e-mail thing.

***saw your post (below) to Trailplace:
congrats on your hike... I do not believe I met u this yr, did we meet?? what 99ers you hike around?***

Nope, don't believe we met on the Trail. We started at Springer the same weekend as Colby Jack, Sunshine, Breakin' Wind, Mom & Booboo, and Red Baron. We stayed close to the first 3 mentioned the whole way, and saw all but Red Baron (who left the Trail in MA) at the AT Lodge in Millinocket at the end. Also hiked with Acrobat, Rubicon, Little John and Houdini awhile.
At Eagle's Nest shelter, just south of Port Clinton, we shared the shelter with Pilgrim, the southbounder who was later hit by a car in Tennessee.

We started late, May 22 from Springer, actually only planning to hike the Georgia section in about ten days. After meeting the guys mentioned above, and talking with the folks at Walasi-Yi, we decided on the spur of the moment to continue all the way. A week back in Atlanta was enough to take care of splitting from work for 4 more months, arranging for a house sitter, and tweaking our gear. We resumed June 7 where we'd left off (Deep Gap, NC), reached Damascus June 27, Harpers Ferry July 30, Kent CT August 15, Hanover, NH Sept. 9, and Katahdin October 13, hiking the whole distance.

I'm presently reworking a draft of our journal, and will probably post it on the web along with a few photos in the near future.

Thanks for including me on the mailing list. It's always great to hear about people back from the trail!

Subject: [at-l] AT Trail Stories, Volume I
Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 19:22:39 -0500

So, it's like this. I am working on a book about my thru hike. Many of you already know this, and yes, I know there are lots of these books already. I'm doing this for personal closure, OK. Nuf said.

I had originally considered adding in a chapter for other thru hikers to send me their trail stories. I had intended this for people who would not otherwise publish anything short of an article in Trailways or their local newspaper. As I was working through this concept, I decided to take it one step further.

Here's the deal.

I'm offering to serve as editor for a new series of books; tentatively titled Appalachian Trail Stories - Volume I (and II and III and IV, and well, you get the idea).

The book will feature trail shorts - stories that otherwise would not be printed for wide distribution. This is not for your end-to-end journal story, but for other stories about the trail, your experiences as a thru hiker, your best and worst days, etc. Jack? You wanna tell all about the Doyle? Here's a good way to do it.

If you want to write a 350 page trail book - well go ahead, just don't send it to me for inclusion in this book. If you want to write 30 short stories, please do. We'll just put them in future volumes; spreading around the wealth so to speak.

I'm still working on the details, and I'll have a web site up soon with specifics, but I wanted to let you - my trail family - know first. I'm also only interested in long distance hiker stories here - no offense to those of you who have only done weekends or several hundred miles of the trail. I'm likely going to limit this to people with 1800 miles or more of the trail behind them. Why?  Well I think these guys need help :). Seriously, I want to give something back to the thru-hiking community that helped me to make it through my walk in the woods, and those of you who did the big miles really inspired me.

Will you get paid for your work? Absolutely. I suspect that royalties will be split between the editor (that's me) and the authors based on some arbitrary rules I make - though equitable if I can be trusted to make such a split based on quantity and interest of the story you submit.  These would be paid out for a limited time after publication - say 10 years - and then any additional royalties will go to the editor. This is more for ease in tracking _you_ than anything else. I don't imagine that there will be any serious money to be made in any of this, but that's not my goal anyway.

I'm doing this to help all of you get your stories published. If I can make a buck while I'm at it great. It won't be my driving force however. If you don't think I'm serious, look at the website I built and now maintain as a volunteer
at http://wcha.org. I do silly things sometimes for little or no pay and like it. Yeah, I guess I am a bit on the stupid side sometimes.

If anyone is interested in participating, please let me know. I'll specifically send you an invitation when I'm ready to accept manuscripts - probably before the end of the month.

There is plenty of writing talent out there, and I'm willing to read it, cull it, turn it into a book, and fight with a publisher to get it to market.

Anyone wanna play?
