These pictures will be sent as seperate e-mails and were taken on the summit of Mt. Washington between 01-12-00 and 01-19-00. For those who don't know the weather stayed between -24 and -31 degrees for 36 hours with winds hitting 117 mph. I went out once with 2 other people to try to fix an instrument on the top of the observatory tower during this time. I still have use of all my fingers and toes.

Hi Fanny Pack,
Here is Swiss Miss from 98. I got your E-Mail from ZEN and Summersbreeze who are visiting me right now in Switzerland. I just wonna ask you if it would be possible to also send me your Mails and messages, so I see how the hikers are who are writing to you. It's just great to hear about the A.T. and to know what's going on.

Me, I am well. Right now I'm working at the hospital in Davos, a touristy skiarea in Switzerland. Today it is snowing like crazy, it is beautiful. I am planning to hike the PCT this year, so I'm even more excited to hear about hikers. Yeeehawww...

I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon

Swiss Miss

Subject: A SwissMiss SummerBreeZen Christmas Special

Hi Dave!
Sorry this has taken so long to write but I'm not traveling with a supercomputer mega van/tuck thing like one fannypack I know.  I just wanted to tell you about the amazing Christmas and New Year we had with Swiss Miss '98.  She lives way up in the mountains of switzerland.  So high up the clouds don't bother to go up there.  After looking at where she lived I
think the AT must of been a bore.  She made Fondue which is basically white wine with a little cheese for texture and we sang.  Sang what? Country Roads of course.
During our visit she officially quit her job and made plans to head to the PCT in April.  Guess who is also headed to the PCT?  The FAMILY of '98  Yes ,  the ever so strong family we know and love are going to make tracks on the west coast.  Happy trails to the whole lot of them.

Thanks again for keeping us updated on all our friends
Love you very much.

Phone MSG from Flutter-by on the progress of Mr Clean:
-------------------------------------------------------
Got a phone msg from Flutter-by on Friday afternoon, 1/21, & she said she had just talked to Steve the Ferryman who had given Mr. Clean a canoe ride across the Kennebec River.  Flutter-by mentioned that Steve said that they had to go a mile or so up river (I believe she said) to cross, evidently the crossing was rather "hairy" (not sure of the proper word to use).  Mr. Clean is in great spirits, the journey continues.

The question from Felix prompted me to call Pilgrim, which I had been thinking about doing for several days. I met Pilgrim in ME and saw him several times.

I found Pilgrim (Fred Hale) to be in good spirits in spite of the long recover he is going through. He continues to be confined to a wheel chair letting his legs heal and the doctors are waiting to see if bone grafts can be avoided.

He would love to hear from any hikers he met, either by mail or a phone call. He does not have email. If any of you would like his address or phone number drop me a private note and I will supply it.

Personally, I think he would appreciate a note from people he hasn't met.

In 1998 Freddie and Jester invited the known trail world to their outdoor wedding in which he wore a kilt and so did most of the male attendees and there was all kinds of Scottish stuff like throwing logs -- but I didn't go and doubtless someone on the list did and could write it up better.

Then there's Dogman and Budlady (also '98)who may have had a Guiness-worthy record walk up the aisle -- 2162 miles of AT accompanied by two of the best trail dawgies ever -- to their wedding in -- Maine?  Again, I didn't go and others reading this probly did.  jpj

Southern Harp and Travelin' Man ('95) hiked to HF, got married, and spent their honeymoon hiking to Katahdin.  Maryland Public TV has a documentary on their hike, including Harp playing and singing her absolutely terrific AT song.

I met WYOMING SKATEBOARDER in the Hundred Mile Wilderness on White Cap Mountain.  He was southbound after flip-flopping.  He was carrying a canoe paddle.  His clothing  was very beatup.  Boots were ducktaped.  Lots of patches and tape on everything.  He was having a wonderful time.  Talked a lot to himself while hiking.  I don't  know why he carried a paddle.

Met him in Maine this past summer. Didn't seem to be a part of this universe, but you must remember who is saying this :-) He had a pack I don't think I could lift. It had as much stuff hanging on the outside as was inside. We watched him "treat" and load a couple of gallons of water and head up the mountain with his paddle.

Woodelf and I met him north of Saddleback Mnt.
He filtered a couple of gallons of water, added iodine then right afterwards added a drink powder that contained extra vitamin C. This of course killed the iodine before it had a chance to work.
His pack was so heavy he had to put it on while sitting on the ground and then wrestle to a standing position. He had the paddle and what looked like an inflatable raft strapped to the top of his pack.
We talked trail talk with him a while. then he found out we were just section hikers and stopped talking hahah.
Best of all he was having fun doing it his way.

There was a flip flopping "Skateboarder" that signed the register in a new shelter in Maryland, January 3rd of this year.  He only had thirty miles to go to Harpers Ferry to complete and said he had been on the trail since last Febuary.

Now, I can see why it took him so long!

Subject: A week in New Hampshire

Hi Fanny Pack,

I just returned from the frozen northlands of New Hampshire.  Bald Eagle '95 and myself spent a week's  vacation visiting hiker friends (Jefferson Boots '95, Baltimore Jack, Yahoola '97, Mooselegs '95, Sy '99) in the area of the Whites.  We did a lot of cross-country and downhill skiing , but with temps below zero during most of our stay and us inexperienced with cold
weather, we were pretty conservative.  We drove through several notches -- Crawford, Franconia, Pinkham, Grafton --gawking at the austere beauty.  The trail towns look good in snow, but no hikers in sight.  (We did give a lift to a hitchiking lumberjack who smelled like Balsam Fir.)

On Sunday, we went on a short hike in the beautiful Grafton Notch under the flanks of Old Speck.  The AT is a snow-shoers' trail now.  The trees were popping like ice cubes over the clean squeaking snow.  It was a sunny negative 5 degree day!  I heard rumors of Mr. Clean struggling southbound through The Wilderness.  Conditions were harsh up there.  Flying home we saw
nothing but white below, meaning perhaps that the entire AT is underneath a blanket of snow right now.

We miss the trail and mountains and are excited about starting the PCT in late April.

Down south when I passed him in Grayson Highlands, he was boiling his water. He would boil it for 10 minutes and then carry all the water he would need for the day - up to 2 gallons.

I found him at a shelter site in the late afternoon, inventorying his gear. He had everything laid out in the shelter, alphabetically. He was comparing the gear with his inventory list. He asked me if I'd wait before unpacking anything
in my bag so we would not get our gear confused. He went on to repack, load up, and hike out at dusk, looking for a place to camp. He was carrying just over 2 gallons of boiled water when he left. I did not see him again till he flipped.

When I met him again in Maine - he had flipped - we stayed together in Andover.  He was loading his new pack - the frame broke on his old pack - and was still boiling his water. He had three fuel bottles with him as one was nearly empty.  He thought he had trimmed his pack weight down to less than 70 pounds. He still  had the full length ax, the 11 inch sheath knife and saw. These were his essential tools for "doing trail maintenance" along the way. I'm not sure if he did any, but he certainly wrote in every register along the trail, some description of what he thought needed to be done...
