Msg from FannyPack on your comments about the UPDATE msgs being put on the Website vs being e-mailed:
1) like to receive the e-mail UPDATES
2) posting on the Web sounds fine
The comments seem to fall in these 2 categories so far.
I will attempt to accomodate both requests, i.e., hopefully we will be able to create a form on the webpage that allows persons to subscribe to the UPDATE msgs.  Then we will NOT have to manually send them, the UPDATE would be e-mailed automatcally at some preset day & time.  Of course, since we are trying to learn Perl & use it on the web server, anything may be possible.  Several of u have offerred your assistance with the technical aspects of developing the webpage & we may be calling on u soon.
NOTE: Pls let us know if anyone has a webpage or knows of a webpage that u would like us to add a link on our webpage.

Hey everyone,

I have succeeded in tracking down most of my northbound friends from this year, but I am still looking for some info on a couple of other people.
Specifically, I am looking for Fa Queen, Trail/Metal Princess and Monk (northbound).  Queen and Princess got off somewhere in mid-VA. Monk made it as far at Kent, at least. I have an email address for him, but he either has a new one or I wrote it
down wrong since my letters get bounced. Thanks everyone.

FannyPack,
Enjoyed very much meeting you and all the others at the Ruck last weekend. We departed Iron Master at 7:30 Sunday morning just as it started snowing, and made it to Roanoke in the early afternoon. By that time I-81 was starting to get treacherous, so we checked into the Best Western in Cloverdale, VA where we had stayed while hiking northbound last August (they even gave us the hiker rate again), put on our boots and hiked a couple miles south on the AT up Tinker Mountain in heavy falling snow. Gorgeous. Noticed in the trail register part way up that Houdini had been through there 11/25/99, apparently completing the section he'd skipped between Pearisburg and DWG after an injury while he was thru-hiking last summer.

Highlight of the Ruck for me was getting to meet and chat with Earl Shaffer. Enjoyed hearing him tell me that he'd done his '48 hike "on the spur of the moment", kinda like mine and Silver Moon's was. He was warm and talkative, full of memories about his thru-hikes and opinions about how the trail has changed since '48 and '65.

Slides of PCT, CDT, Nepal and AT were also great, as were lightpacking and LNT presentations. It was fun swapping tales with
everyone, and I'm excited about trying out the G4 pack I bought at the auction, along with the Nomad 2 for 2 tent which I ordered from Kurt.

Mainly writing tonight to give a new email address for myself. Now it's: spur@mac.com.
Still working on journal and photos to post on a website. Soon maybe.

Best,
Spur of the Moment, GAME9

Good idea, but you might also send a weekly or monthly email with only the messeges subject line.  That way, when we forget to check the website, that way we don't miss that message from the long lost hiker friend we lost track of.

Plus an up to date email list would be a great website reference (I did this with 60 email addresses of family).

Hey Fannypack,

I think your website is a really great idea.  I'll enjoy following Mr. Clean's progress on the link to the MSN Community you have set up.  Often, checking updates on a website would be much more convenient than receiving e-mails, especially when hiking for long periods.  If it would help you, feel free to take any ideas, or download any code or images from my site.  I
look forward to seeing your site grow.

From your updates it's easy to see that there is going to be a very large number of AT veterans on the PCT this year.  I'll be starting the PCT at the Mexico border on 27 April, and look forward to reunions with the many AT friends that will be out there, and meeting the many more I've only heard about but never met yet.  Hope you get the chance to break away and do some
hiking this year yourself.

Take it easy,
Prehistoric Tony

Hi Fanny Pack!

I have really enjoyed reading the e-mail from you.  Your efforts are to be commended.  Regarding web page vs. e-mail, I have a slight preference for e-mail, since I frequently check my e-mail without going onto the web.

Regarding the list of e-mail addresses, unless I am mistaken, my name and South Walker's are not on the list set forth in your message (even though I am obviously on your group e-mail list). In case of accidental erasure, here is the data:

Logjumper - Emmett Roden - logjumper99@aol.com - ME2GA99
South Walker - Jim Hipp - jimhipp@alltel.net - ME2GA99

FYI, I just received my vanity car plates from Maryland.  They read:  ME2GA99  If you see a blue Ford Windstar with those plates, you'll know it is me.  Keep up the good work!

Fannypack,

Yesterday, (2/8/00), I got up on crutches! Harder to walk than the last few million steps, but I'll get there. I go in for a bone graft in the next couple of weeks to get the other leg going. Learning computing little by little. Quite a bit different than cutting meat! Thanks for all you people are doing for me, it goes longer than you can imagine.
Thanks Fannypack again for all the support on the trail for all of us, and for all you do even off the trail.

Subject: [at-l] 501 and Pizza..
Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2000 18:42:21 +0000

>I'm told that the pizza you can get delivered at the 501 shelter is great,
>but I hear the calzones are even better

Just make sure that the person who drives up to the dirt parking lot is actually the pizza delivery person... :)

In '98, (WARNING: FORMER THRU-HIKER TELLING A TRAIL STORY! BE AFRAID. Thankyou)

At the 501 Shelter, 10 of us placed a HUGE order with the pizza place.  They said to meet them at the hikers parking lot that is maybe .10 mile from the shelter. So three of us were waiting there, myself included.

Now, picture what we looked like waiting at the parking lot:
There was Relax. She looked squeaky clean enough. No problem.

But then there was Brian and myself!

Brian was tall, thin, long reddish beard and hair.  But in his coolmax shirt and khaki supplex shorts, looked a bit more presentable than I.

So what did I look like? I was sporting what I called the terrorist look.  I had a dirty, grungy hospital "scrub" shirt, a well worn  and funky looking swim suit. To really make this look, add a thick, black beard, longish (hadn't cut my hair in 3 mos) black hair, and a dark complexion from being outdoors for so long. Yep, give me an AK-47 and I would fit the stereotype that you see on the news.

So, this car pulls up to the parking lot, Ah! Pizza!  Who else would come to a hikers parking lot at 7 PM? We  approached the car, and we all had these stupid grins on our faces. The woman in the car was VERY frightened looking. I asked "Are you the pizza lady?".. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!  Sheepishly, we walked away. When we are a good distance away, she got out of the car,
and was walking at a very fast clip, puffing away on her ciggarette like it was her last one. Ever.

When the actually pizza delivery car actually showed up, I refused to approach it for some odd reason. :-)

So that is my story on how I almost got maced on the trail.

Mags... only a watermelon terrorist..

I use Juno, it's free there are hundreds of dial up numbers and it's the easiest e-mail program I've ever used. My Juno account is maybe 5 or 6 years old, with no problems. My Mom has the free e-mail only account but I'm using their free Internet too. There's a small banner you get used to that's always on top with the free Internet, but you can move it anywhere you want. We barely notice it. I've used free Juno Internet for a couple of months and only had trouble connecting twice on Sunday afternoons. Go to Juno.com and download the free software for the free e-mail account and try it or the free Internet software. If you don't like it, can it. You can even get a floppy version so you can access your e-mail from
almost any computer. (I don't think there's a dos version of either) If you don't mind ignoring some adds try it.  I tried NetZero and think it stinks, the banner is to unstable.

Subject: [at-l] SW VA Trail conditions
Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2000 15:22:59 -0500

Friday, another maintainer & I hiked up to the Chestnut Knob Shelter and did a recon the ridge and adjacent area (4,409ft), in prep for a work trip scheduled for next weekend.

The trail has drifts up to your waist.  Actually, we were off the trail a few times to avoid even higher drifts.   The road is snow covered up to your calves, w/ drifts knee-high or higher.

In the morning and up to about 1:30, it was clear and we had spectacular views of Burks Garden, Big Walker Mountain, Beartown Ridge, etc.  With the trees leafless and the snow outlining every ridge, fold, stream, and field, there were views that you'll never see in summer.

Then the snow started.  By 2:30 we had near whiteout conditions on top and started down.  It snowed heavily all that afternoon and Friday night, w/ a good wind.  So, I expect the drifts could be worst by now.

BTW -- we canceled the work trip.

"The Paradox of Our Time - George Carlin

"The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.

We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less.

We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life; we've added years to life, not life to years."

"We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor.

We've conquered outer space, but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.

We've split the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less.
We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait.
We build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication."

"These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men, and short character; steep profits, and shallow
relationships.

These are the times of more food, but less nutrition. These are days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses,
but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer to quiet, to kill."

It is a time when there is much in the show window and nothing in the stockroom; a time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete."

George Carlin
