A woman hiking on the Appalachian Trail in Giles County was hospitalized
Sunday after a 6 1/2 -hour rescue, Giles County authorities said.
The woman, 25, from Golden, Colo., injured her head about 11 a.m. in the
Pine Swamp area on Peters Mountain. Capt. Steve Davis with the Giles County
Rescue Squad said he could not release her name because next of kin had not
been notified.
The woman was part of a five-person group, one member of which reached
Virginia 635 and called 911 about 12:20 p.m., Davis said. The hiker was not
certain where the injured woman was.
Rescue workers drove four-wheel-drive vehicles about 2 1/2 miles into the
forest, then searched on foot. The woman was brought out at 5:50 p.m., Davis
said. She was taken to Giles Memorial Hospital. She had a concussion but did
not lose consciousness.
People should be familiar with landmarks near where they are hiking, Davis
said.
