No he has not been found. My sister Anne and brother Robert did not find last weekend. There has been some banking activity in Hagerstown, MD (western MD) which we are pursuing.
Thanks for inquiring.

Mary,
I am posting your feedback (msgs verbatim) to a couple hiker lists I am on as well as my website: http://hikercafe.com so I want to make sure I am helping & to that end I want to make sure I state the current situation correctly.. Can u please tell me what "we" should do if we spot your brother??? Please be specific because "we" do NOT know what state of mind he is in but we do want to help... Thanks for your feedback... Also I see the temperatures will get much colder this weekend so I hope we can find him before the weather deteriorates drastically..

Dear David,
Thank you for your assistance. To begin with, my brother Herb is a great guy. He is articulate and normally, on the reserved side. He has an underlying mood disorder and has some religious delusions which will most likely not be evident. He is the type of person who would help someone else even at his own sacrifice. If you do come across him on the trail, you can ask him some questions to see if he is my brother. He is a computer programer from Harford Co., Maryland. He has 2 brothers and twin sisters. I believe he has my pack which is turquois blue and black. He should have a red, down sleeping bag. I will attach a photo as well.
If you do come across him, determine where he has left his car and what his plans are for hiking/travel. As soon as you are able, please call Anne's cell phone # (410)913-9401, my home# (410)685-2924, or my beeper # (410)389-5979. Feel free to call my home #collect at any time of the day/night. If he appears to be a threat to himself or he is erratic, call the local police and relay the info. from the attachment. If he is in Maryland, there is a current emergency petition.
Thanks gain. Let me know if there are any more ?'s

Dear David,
The hikercafe site looks great. I believe my sister's prior concern was that if fliers were widely posted in all the parks and on the trail, he could potentially see them and become even more evasive or harm himself.
Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Mary Martello

FannyPack,
Thanks for the information. ATC's trail management staff were notified of the missing persons report on Herbert Martello on the weekend of September 23-24. They have been working, along with the NPS AT Chief Ranger, to spread the word to local agencies along the mid-Atlantic section of the AT.
Many sobo hikers I have spoken with here at ATC HQ have been contacted along the Trail by local authorities, so it looks like the word is getting out to the hikers in this area. I'll check with our trail management staff to see if and how they want to post more details. I'll also pass along your website info - looks like good updates and information.
FYI, Laurie's going to be out of the office until late next week, if you are waiting responses on anything else.
Thanks,
Lauren

Dear David,
Yesterday, we were first made aware that the Emergency Petition we were granted had
expired. It probably would be difficult to have an additioanl one granted as I have not
seen my brother for 3 weeks and the Judge may not feel I would be able to attest to his
current state of mind. We may try any way.
We found out yesterday that he has been camping at a park near Cunningham Falls in
Western, Maryland. Unfortunately, he was missed once again by my siblings.
In response to your prior question as to what to do, you
should no longer call the authorities unless you feel he in immediate danger of hurting
himself. My family and I would like to be
updated on his well-being, state of mind, travel plans, and location if he is spotted.
Please call collect or email. I would appreciate you
disseminating this info.
Thanks once again.
