CMNN120 - Professional Comm. For Paramedics I This course introduces and develops vocabulary and written/oral communication skills necessary for the field of paramedicine. Course work focuses on medical terminology, objective description and accurate reporting, analytical writing and oral presentations. Students will use e-mail to send messages summarizing and setting goals for clinical placement experiential learning. CMNN320 - Professional Comm. For Paramedics II Course under development. GEAA100 - General Education:Aesthetic Appreciation This course focuses on topics in the Arts and Humanities as practiced in our culture. Subject areas may include literature, film, art history and music. Normally, students will choose an equivalent course from among a variety of specific course-offerings to fulfill this course requirement. GECL100 - General Education: Civic Life This course focuses on the topic of CIVIC LIFE in Canadian society. Subject areas may include basic political and legal freedoms, legal rights and participation in community and public life. Normally, students will choose an equivalent course from among a variety of specific course offerings to fulfill this course requirement. GECU100 - General Education:Cultural Understanding This course focuses on issues related to the cultural, social, ethnic and linguistic diversity of Canada and the world. Subject areas may include anthropology, cross-cultural communication, and cultural values and policies. Normally, students will choose an equivalent course from among a variety of specific course offerings to fulfill this requirement. GEPD100 - General Education: Personal Development This course focuses on the student's own personal self-awareness, intellectual growth, well-being and understanding of others. Subject areas may include ethics, human development, psychology, wellness and human sexuality. GEUS100 - General Education:Understanding Science This course will fulfill the General Education goal of Understanding Science as required by the College Standards and Accrediation Council. Understanding Science implies an appreciation of the contribution of science to the development of civilization, human understanding and potential. GEUT100 - Gen. Education:Understanding Technology This course will fulfill the General Education goal of Understanding Technology as required by the College Standards and Accreditation Council. Understanding Technology implies an understanding of the interrelationship between the development and use of technology, and society and the ecosystem. GEWE100 - General Education: Work and the Economy This course focuses on the topics of WORK AND THE ECONOMY. Subject areas may include the meaning, history, and organization of work and working-life challenges to the individual and society. Normally, students will choose an equivalent course from among a variety of specific course offerings to fulfill this course requirement. LAWS101 - Medico - Legal Aspects of Emergencies This course provides an overview of the legal system in Canada generally and focuses on the legal rules and issues which pertain specifically to the provision of services by emergency medical care assistants. This course will present the introductory theory of emergency care as it relates to the assessment and management of a person suffering from selected illness or injury. Applying pathophysiological concepts, students will begin to develop the theoretical rationale to explain alterations in patients' conditions and predict expected changes in assessment findings. Radiotelephone communications, preparation of an ambulance for service and documentation procedures will also be incorporated into the course. PARA104 - Anatomy and Physiology PARA104 is the first of two a two-part course incorporating introductory aspects of anatomy and physiology, in order to introduce to the student the study of normal structure and function, and the recognition of various homestatic imbalances. PARA110 - Patient Care Procedures I Hands-on laboratory sessions designed to prepare students with the introductory skills needed to provide basic emergency care to a victim of an accident or illness and to provide care and protection against further injury during transport. PARA120 - Paramedic Practice I This is an introductory clinical course designed to provide the student with 'hands-on' exposure to the Ambulance Service and to the role of the Paramedic. Under the supervision of a Paramedic crew, students will observe and participate in patient care as appropriate. This course is a continuation of Patient Care Theory I. The major emphasis of this course is placed on the responsibilities of the student in assessing, managing and transporting patients in stabilized conditions, emergency situations and situations that may become emergencies. Students will learn the assessment, pathophysiological processes and management of various medical and traumatic problems that may afflict pre-hospital patients. PARA204 - Anatomy and Physiology This is a continuation from Anatomy and Physiology I of the study of the structure and function of the human body as an integrated whole. The content provides a continuing overview of human body systems. It provides the basis for subsequent study of pathophysiology and patient care procedures. PARA210 - Patient Care Procedures II The student will acquire the skills necessary to perform specific assessment and interventions to victims of trauma or to the critically ill. He/she will also learn how to recognize complications and minimize them. The student will apply those selected laboratory skills for the provision of emergency care in various simulated laboratory settings. PARA211 - Ambulance Operations This course emphasizes techniques necessary to ensure driver and vehicle readiness for emergency service. Students will acquire the skills required to: maintain emergency vehicles, prepare and safely operate an emergency vehicle, drive defensively avoiding hazards and control skids. Students will also develop the ability to interact with Emergency Response aircraft. PARA220 - Paramedic Practice II Practical experience will be provided in a number of hospital settings. Students will apply theoretical content of previous courses through observation and participation in various selected hospital departments. Students will gain an understanding of the role of hospital staff in the continuing care of pre-hospital patients. This course is a continuation of Patient Care Theory II. The major emphasis of this course is placed on the responsibilities of the student in assessing, applying the pathophysiological processes, managing and transporting patients in stabilized conditions, emergency situations and situations that may become emergencies. Students will learn the assessment and management of various medical and traumatic problems that may afflict pre-hospital patients. PARA307 - Pharmacology for Paramedics This course provides the student with a framework of knowledge about the general principles of pharmacology at a level which is appropriate for the paramedic. The student will gain a working knowledge enabling him/her to deliver the Ministry of Health EHSB protocols for "Symptom Relief" (administration of medication), "Semi-Automatic External Defibrillation", and "Intravenous Therapy" (starting and monitoring an IV). The student will become familiar with equipment and drugs used by Advanced Care Paramedics. Course under development. PARA310 - Patient Care Procedures III Course under development. PARA320 - Paramedic Practice III This course provides the opportunity for students to gain practical experience in Emergency Health Services (E.M.S.) in true emergency patient care situations in the community. Under the direct supervision of a paramedic crew the student will review, participate in, and analyze emergency situations which will form a basis for professional practice in the future. PARA401 - Comprehensive Review Course under development. PARA420 - Paramedic Practice IV Course under development. This course is designed to develop physical fitness (cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and muscular endurance) through individual training programs and group athletic activities. Students will demonstrate and practice lifting and transferring of patients, utilizing proper posture and safe lifting techniques thus ensuring healthy back care. This course is designed to further develop physical fitness through interaction with a personal trainer and group athletic activities. Using previously learned techniques, students will further enhance their ability to lift and transfer patients in simulated settings. Leadership and presentation skills will be developed through scenarios and teaching situations. The effects of nutrition on the health of the Paramedic shiftworker will be explored in student centered assignments. Awareness of self defense. PSHY118 - Crisis Intervention for Paramedics I This course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of the causes, behaviours, and appropriate interventions related to people in crisis situations. The student will be able to identify potential crises situations, the various behaviours arising from same whether it be clients or his/her own and a variety of behavioural and communicative techniques to intervene effectively in these crises situations. PSHY218 - Crisis Intervention for Paramedics II This course is a continuation of PSHY218. Students will gain the knowledge and the ability to assess, plan, and intervene appropriately and effectively in a number of specified situation. Emphasis will be on stress management, communication, street strategies, understanding of psychopathology and multi-casuality emergencies. |
