Q. How many students are accepted into the Fanshawe Paramedic Program?

A. Typically Fanshawe accepts around 30 individuals.

 

Q. How many hours per week are you at school?

A. Including clinicals, expect to spend around 40 hours per week in class or at placements.  As well, there is a large amount of independant studying required to be successful in the program.  Most people spend on average at least an additional 10 to 15 hours per week on their studies.

 

Q. How many class hours are there not including study time ?

A. 1st semester 27 hrs/wk, 2nd semester 27 hrs/wk, 3rd semester 26 hrs/wk, 4th semester 45 hrs/wk

 

Q. Can most students preform the lifting requirements needed to be a Paramedic ?

A. Yes, a training program is designed in the physical education course to prepare each student for the testing

 

Q. How can I obtain a class "F" licence ?

A. Students can contact Fanshawe College's Continuing Education office for details

 

Q. What is the staffing in each ambulance during our "ride along" sessions ?

A. Each ambulance is staffed with two EMCA certified Paramedics and one student, as stated in the Ambulance Act

 

Q. How many students are admitted to the Fanshawe College Paramedic Program ?

A. Approximately 30-32 strudents are admitted to the program each year

 

Q. Is it possible to have a full or part time job during to school year ?

A. Yes, it is possible, but some students don't recommend it for the first semester

 

Q. How difficult is the Paramedic Program ?

A. The students in program have commented that the program is difficult, but with good time management all students will succeed

 

Q. Do the "approximate costs" in the Paramedic Program pamphlet reflect accurate program costs ?

A. Yes, the prices are accurate, but are based on 1999 costs. The most expensive semester is the first semester due to text book costs, but the same texts can

be used over the two years of the program

 

Q. How soon after beginning the school semester do you begin the practical learning in the ambulance ?

A. Usually the "ride alongs" begin after Thanksgiving weekend and there are five shifts of 12 hrs each.

 

Q. How do the clinical experiences change from first semester to second semester ?

A. In the first semester students ride out in the ambulance, second semester clinical is preformed in the community at psychiatric facilities, retirement homes, hospital emergency departments, and many more places of learning

 

Q. Can I do my " ride alongs" in other cities then London ?

A. Yes, it is common for students to work in both London and St. Thomas, but in 3rd and 4th semesters the ride alongs can be done elsewhere
