CCS Episode 10 - Sakura's Flowery Athletics Day

OPENING THEME MUSIC: "Catch You, Catch Me"

*** Courtyard ***

Some girls are sprinting on the track.

SAKURA, narrating: Today is Tomoeda Elementary School's athletics day.

She runs, grinning.

SAKURA, narrating: Some kids don't like athletics day because it's hard and a lot of work, but I love it!

Sakura crosses the finish line first, giggling.

TITLE SCREEN

Sakura goes over to Rika.

RIKA: You're so fast, Sakura-chan!

SAKURA: Arigatou, Rika-chan!

She hears someone clapping, and turns to see Touya and Yukito across the courtyard.

SAKURA: Yukito-san!

She runs over to them.

YUKITO: You run really fast, don't you?

TOUYA: That's the only thing she's good at, anyway.

Sakura stomps his foot. She notices the bag he's carrying.

SAKURA: Is this lunch? It's so big!

YUKITO: Touya and I made it.

TOUYA: Otou-san said he'd rush over here as soon as he's done with his presentation at the university.

SAKURA: He's got work, so it can't be helped. [narrating] Otou-san teaches archaeology at the university. He doesn't just teach class, but he goes to things like excavations and research presentations, too. He's very busy.

Yukito looks at the event schedule for the athletics day.

YUKITO: They're having a 100-meter race for parents this afternoon. It'd be nice if your father could make it in time for that.

SAKURA: Hai!

TOMOYO, on PA system: Cheerleading team members, please meet at the entrance gate.

SAKURA: Ah, that's Tomoyo-chan's voice!

TOMOYO, on PA system: I repeat, cheerleading team members, please meet at the entrance gate.

YUKITO: Are you going to be cheering, too, Sakura-chan?

SAKURA: Hai!

He holds up his camera.

YUKITO: Then I'll take lots of pictures.

Sakura grabs Touya's sleeve and whispers to him.

SAKURA, whispers: Please make sure you take a picture of Yukito-san later. You have to, okay?

TOUYA: Yeah, yeah, okay.

*** Announcement Booth ***

Two boys are talking next to Tomoyo's seat.

BOY 1: That fourth-grader, Kinomoto, is really fast!

BOY 2: No one's going to beat her.

Tomoyo pops up, surprising them.

TOMOYO: Sakura-chan is not only fast, but kawaii, too!

Sakura runs up wearing her cheerlading costume.

SAKURA: Tomoyo-chan!

TOMOYO: Sakura-chan! Is that your cheerleading outfit?

SAKURA: Yep!

TOMOYO: It looks really nice. If only it had some lace in the neck area, and maybe a ribbon, too....

SAKURA: Tomoyo-chan, is your mother here yet?

TOMOYO: She's at a company meeting. She said she'd come right afterwards.

SAKURA, thinking: Tomoyo-chan's mother is the president of a big toy company. She's really busy. Some days she doesn't see Tomoyo-chan at all. I've never met her, so I'm pretty excited about meeting her today. Come to think of it, I've never heard Tomoyo-chan mention her father.... [aloud] I have to get going. Watch me, okay?

TOMOYO: I'll cheer you on from here!

Sakura waves her pompom and walks away.

BOY 1: She really is kawaii.

BOY 2: She sure is.

Tomoyo readies her camera.

TOMOYO, to herself: Okay, everything is ready! I have to capture Sakura-chan's victories on video!

The boys fall over.

*** Courtyard ***

The cheerleading team is performing. Sakura twirls her baton, while other girls shake pompoms. Sakura tosses her baton, leaps over another girl, and catches the baton. Yukito takes pictures.

YUKITO: Sakura-chan is doing really well now!

TOUYA: Well, compared to before, yeah. When they first started - you know how they throw the baton? - she always caught it with her head.

As he says it, Sakura's baton hits her in the head.

SAKURA: Hoeeee-!

TOUYA: Like that.

FEMALE ANNOUNCER: Next is the final event of the afternoon, the fourth-grade obstacle course. Participants must endure numerous challenges to reach the goal. Please cheer all the participants on!

Sakura puts her hat on to run the course.

TOMOYO: Sakura-chan, ganbatte!!!!

SAKURA: Hoe?

She looks over at the sidelines to see Rika, Tomoyo, Naoko, and Chiharu.

GIRLS: Sakura-chan!

Sakura giggles and waves. She notices Syaoran in the lane beside her and frowns. Terada raises the starting pistol.

TERADA: Get ready....

YUKITO: Go for it!

Sakura and Syaoran look over at him. They grin.

SYAORAN: I'm definitely not going to lose.

SAKURA: I won't, either.

TERADA: Set....

He fires the pistol and they start running. They jump over or crawl under a ladder, push giant plastic balls, and run across a balance beam. They crawl under a net, and are neck and neck when they come out.

TOMOYO: It's down to Sakura-chan and Li-kun!

YUKITO: Go for it!!!!

Syaoran is distracted by Yukito. He turns bright red, trips, and Sakura crosses the finish line first.

SAKURA: I did it!

*** Sidelines ***

SAKURA: Your mother's still not here?

TOMOYO: No, but I think she'll be here soon.

SAKURA: Then why don't you come eat lunch with us?

TOMOYO: Is it really okay? Intruding on your family's lunch...?

SAKURA: Sure, it's okay! It'll taste even better if we eat it together!

TOMOYO: Arigatou gozaimasu!

Syaoran walks past.

SAKURA: Oh, Li-kun! Ummm, would you like to eat lunch with us, too, Li-kun?

SYAORAN: Huh? Why with you?

Yukito waves from across the courtyard.

YUKITO: Sakura-chan! Lunch is ready!

SAKURA: Hai!

She starts to walk over to him, but Syaoran grabs her shirt.

SYAORAN, quietly: I'll eat with you.

SAKURA: Hoe?

*** Later ***

Sakura, Tomoyo, Syaoran, Yukito, and Touya are sitting on a blanket. Sakura holds out a plate to Tomoyo.

SAKURA: Hey, this omelet is really good.

TOMOYO: Of course. Your brother and Tsukishiro-san made it. It really looks delicious.

A flower petal falls on the omelet. Tomoyo looks surprised, then smiles. Yukito begins to eat, and they stare.

YUKITO: Huh? Gomen! I guess I'm hogging all the food.

SAKURA: Nah, eating a lot is a good thing!

YUKITO: Well, the lunch is really good.

Syaoran stands up.

SYAORAN: To eat a lot is a sign of good health!

YUKITO: That's true, isn't it?

Syaoran looks at him and turns red.

SYAORAN: Gochisou sama.

He puts on his shoes and runs off. As he does, Fujitaka runs up carrying a cooler.

FUJITAKA: Gomen! I'm late.

SAKURA: Otou-san!

FUJITAKA: Ohhh, I missed the cheerleading show.

TOMOYO: I videotaped it.

YUKITO: And I took a lot of pictures.

FUJITAKA: Domo arigatou. Gomen ne, Sakura-san.

Sakura shakes her head and hugs him.

SAKURA: Nah! I'm glad that you got here as fast as you could.

Fujitaka opens the cooler to reveal six gelatin cups.

FUJITAKA: I made these yesterday. I had them in the fridge at the university, so they should still be cold.

Sakura and Tomoyo giggle. They eat their gelatin.

SAKURA: Hey, do we still have some jelly left?

FUJITAKA: There's some left in the fridge at home.

SAKURA, thinking: I'll give some to Kero-chan when I get home.

Fujitaka stands up with a plastic bag.

FUJITAKA: I'm going to go throw this trash away.

TOUYA: I'll go, too.

YUKITO: Me, too.

They walk off.

SAKURA: Li-kun missed this delicious jelly.

TOMOYO: Yeah.

WOMAN: Tomoyo.

Tomoyo turns around to see a woman with a fashionable haircut standing above them.

TOMOYO: Okaa-sama!

SAKURA, thinking: Ohhh, what a pretty person....

Four women in dark clothes and sunglasses are standing beside Tomoyo's mother.

TOMOYO: Sakura-chan, let me introduce you. This my mother.

Tomoyo's mother gasps when Tomoyo says Sakura's name. She stares at Sakura and Sakura blinks.

SAKURA: Hoeee...?

TOMOYO'S MOTHER: Oh, gomen nasai! I'm Daidouji Sonomi. Thank you for being so kind to my Tomoyo.

SAKURA: Oh, that's nothing. She's always doing things for me, and....

SONOMI: You're really kawaii. You really look like a little girl I used to know.

Sakura blushes.

SONOMI: I've heard so much about you from Tomoyo, but I still don't know your family's name.... Would you please tell me?

SAKURA: Um, Kino-

FUJITAKA: Sakura-san.

SAKURA: Otou-san!

Fujitaka walks up and Sonomi shrieks in horror.

SONOMI: KINOMOTO-SENSEI!!!!

Fujitaka gasps.

FUJITAKA: Sonomi-kun!

EYECATCH - Sakura

Fujitaka and Sonomi are standing in a corner of the courtyard.

FUJITAKA: Your name has changed. I had no idea it was you. During school, it was Amamiya Sonomi, wasn't it?

SONOMI: "Sakura." With that name, I should've known. After all, Nadesiko always said that if she had a daughter that would be the name she gave her.... I'll never forgive you!

FUJITAKA: You're right. At the time, Nadesiko-san was still a high school student, and I had just started teaching.

SONOMI: That's right!!!! Just a beginning teacher! And on top of it, you married your student! And on top of that, it was my precious Nadesiko!

FUJITAKA: Yeah.

SONOMI: Ever since kindergarten I'd always, always protected Nadesiko so that stupid insects like you couldn't get to her. In spite of it all, this idiotic bug stuck to her! You let Nadesiko die at age 27!

Fujitaka's smile doesn't fade.

SONOMI: How dare you smile?!

FUJITAKA: I promised her I wouldn't cry.

He looks sad and closes his eyes.

FUJITAKA: I promised Nadesiko-san.

Sonomi looks a little affected, then gets angry again.

SONOMI: Anyway, I'll never forgive you!

Sakura, Touya, and Yukito watch them from a distance.

SAKURA: I guess otou-san already knew Tomoyo-chan's mother.

Touya looks thoughtful.

TOMOYO, on PA system: Parents participating in the 100-meter race, please meet at the entrance gate.

Fujitaka runs over to Sakura.

TOMOYO, on PA: I repeat, parents participating in the 100-meter race, please meet at the entrance gate.

FUJITAKA: Sorry for keeping you waiting.

SAKURA: Otou-san, you're running the 100-meter race, right?

TOUYA: Should I go instead?

FUJITAKA: I'll be all right. Besides, I told Sonomi-san that I'd definitely run.

He and Sakura walk off.

FUJITAKA: I wonder where the entrance gate is...?

SAKURA: It's this way....

They walk toward the track.

YUKITO: Should I ask why? Or is it better if I don't?

TOUYA: Sonomi-san used to be Amamiya Sonomi, and....

YUKITO: Huh? Wasn't "Amamiya" your mother's maiden name?

TOUYA: Yeah. Sonomi-san was okaa-san's cousin. Okaa-san was the only daughter of a famous aristocrat. Otou-san was a beginning teacher. She knew it was going to be a hard life, but okaa-san got married at the age of 16. She worked part-time as a model while going to school. Not that it was really the reason, but when okaa-san got sick, her family blamed it on otou-san. Sonomi-san had always loved okaa-san since childhood, and she was the strongest opponent to the marriage.

Some flower petals fall. Yukito nods.

YUKITO: But the pictures of Nadesiko-san in your house weren't from magazines, and she looked really happy.

More petals fall.

TOUYA: But.... There are really a lot of flowers.

*** Courtyard ***

Tomoyo is sitting in her announcement booth.

TOMOYO: My mother and your father already knew each other.

SAKURA: Yeah.... Huh? Tomoyo-chan...?

The parents are all gathered on the track. Sonomi and Fujitaka are in front.

TOMOYO: Okaa-sama!

SAKURA: Was your mother supposed to enter, Tomoyo-chan?

TOMOYO: Iee.

SAKURA: Is your mother a fast runner?

Tomoyo looks thoughtful.

TOMOYO: If I remember correctly, she was a track star in school or something like that.

SAKURA: Hoe!

Sonomi looks over at Fujitaka.

SONOMI: I won't lose to you.

Terada raises the starting pistol as flower petals fall.

TERADA: Set....

He fires. The parents start to run. Sonomi starts out in the lead, but she's easily passed up by Fujitaka.

SAKURA: Hoe!

TOMOYO: Your father is so fast!

YUKITO: He's fast.

TOUYA: He's the fastest in the family.

Sonomi grits her teeth and tries to catch up. The shower of flower petals thickens. Chiharu and Rika are holding the finish line.

RIKA: Why are all these flower petals falling?

CHIHARU: If this keeps up I won't be able to see anything!

SAKURA: It can't be! A clow card?

*** Classroom ***

Syaoran looks outside at the falling petals.

SYAORAN, to himself: A Clow card.

He turns to leave, but Takashi grabs his arm.

TAKASHI: Li-kun, where are you going?

SYAORAN: "Where"?! Something really bad's happening!

He points out the window. Takashi looks.

TAKASHI: You're right. It's times like these that we have to stay calm! After all, we're the first-aid monitors.

Syaoran tries to take advantage of his spiel by sneaking off, but Takashi tackles him.

TAKASHI: Wait! You can't go. In case someone gets hurt, we have to be ready and wait here for them.

SYAORAN: Ohhh, let go of me! The Clow card...!

*** Courtyard ***

The field is covered in pink flower petals. The students are up to their waists, but Sonomi and Fujitaka continue to run.

SAKURA: They're still running.

TOMOYO: Okaa-sama hates to lose.

Rika struggles to hold the finish line up.

RIKA: I can't move!

CHIHARU: I'll drown in all these flowers!

Sakura clutches the key in her hand.

TOMOYO: Are you going to use magic here?

SAKURA: Nobody's looking. Key which contains the forces of darkness, reveal thy true form before me. I, Sakura, command thee under contract. Release! Fly!

She and Tomoyo fly up above the falling petals.

SAKURA: Do you think it's really a Clow card?

TOMOYO: At a time like this, the best thing to do is ask an expert!

She takes out her cell phone.

SAKURA: Where'd you get that from...?

*** Sakura's Bedroom ***

Kero is playing a video game.

KERO: Now! It's the Cerberus Super Special! Take that!

He loses.

KERO: Noooo! My special attack!

His phone rings.

KERO: What do you want? I'm in the depths of depression right now.

SAKURA'S VOICE: Kero-chan, we're in trouble!

KERO: That's the work of a Clow card, no mistaking it.

SAKURA'S VOICE: I thought so. The ground is covered in flowers.

Kero starts to play his video game again.

KERO: Well, for now, you can start by figuring out where all the flower petals are coming from.

*** Courtyard ***

Sakura and Tomoyo look around, and see a pink glow coming from the rooftop.

SAKURA: That's it!

Sonomi swims through the flower petals.

SONOMI: I won't! I won't lose!

Rika and Chiharu flail in the flowers.

RIKA: Help!

CHIHARU: Someone, I'll be buried!

Someone takes the finish line out of her hand. It's Yukito.

YUKITO: You'd better get someplace high. We'll hold this for you.

Touya takes the other end of the finish line. Sakura and Tomoyo land on the rooftop.

TOMOYO: There!

A pink woman with green eyes is spinning around gracefully and sending out petals everywhere.

TOMOYO: Sakura-chan!

Sakura just stares at the woman.

TOMOYO: Sakura-chan.

SAKURA: Oh? So that's the Clow card, is it?

She holds out her wand, but the woman comes over and touches her face, grinning.

KERO'S VOICE: So how's it goin' over there?

TOMOYO: It's gotten worse. Sakura-chan started dancing all of a sudden.

Indeed, the woman is dancing with Sakura, who is frightened.

KERO'S VOICE: It's a lady with croissant-like hair, right?

TOMOYO: Hai.

KERO'S VOICE: It's all right. That one loves fun, happy things.

SAKURA: What's going on?!

TOMOYO: Sakura-chan, you have to stop the flowers quickly or the school will be buried!

Sakura finally gets her feet on the ground. The woman looks at her questioningly.

SAKURA: Return to thy true form!

The card is sealed. It's Flower.

SAKURA: "Flower"?

KERO'S VOICE: That's right! It's the Flower card. You were having a school athletics day, right? Flower gets really excited when parties and fun things happen. She probably thought all the flowers would make everyone even happier.

SAKURA, nervously: So what can this card do...?

KERO'S VOICE: It can produce different kinds of flowers.

SAKURA: Th... That's all?

KERO'S VOICE: Well, well, at least you weren't in any danger this time.

SAKURA: We were about to suffocate in flowers!

TOMOYO: Wah!!!!

SAKURA: What's wrong?!

TOMOYO: I forgot to videotape all this!

Sakura falls over. Fujitaka crosses the finish line, panting.

YUKITO: Congratulations!

FUJITAKA: Huh? Tsukishiro-kun? Touya-kun?

He looks back at the angry Sonomi.

*** Later ***

Everyone is cleaning up the flower petals. Touya sweeps petals into a bag Yukito is holding.

YUKITO: With all these, we can make a lot of jam!

TOUYA: Why do I have to sweep at her school athletics day?

Sonomi and Fujitaka are off by themselves again.

SONOMI: No, NO, NO! It's always this way, ever since high school! I didn't want you to have Nadesiko, so I challenged you over and over again, but I always lose!

FUJITAKA: It'd be rude to you for me to lose intentionally. I know how dear Nadesiko-san was to you, so I tried my best, too.

Sakura and Tomoyo are watching from the bushes behind them.

SONOMI: I can still remember you and Nadesiko and your first home, in that tiny little apartment, living together! Walking to school together, even though you were just a beginning teacher! You made her lunch every day, didn't you? Both of you, eating the same lunch! On top of that, you held hands while you walked home!!!!

SAKURA: It looks like they're arguing about something....

TOMOYO, whispering: Sakura-chan. [whispers]

SAKURA: But....

TOMOYO: It'll be all right.

Sakura takes out the Flower card.

SAKURA: Send flowers to those two over there, Flower.

SONOMI: Why do you have to be so good at cooking, anyway?!

They're surprised to see two nadesiko flowers floating down into their hands.

SONOMI: Nadesiko flowers....

Fujitaka looks sadly at the flower.

SONOMI: Nadesiko always came over really happy, smiling, after spending time with you. I would be seriously angry, and she'd just smile and laugh and make my anger melt away. She was such a free spirit.

FUJITAKA: True, she was a little airy.

SONOMI: I loved Nadesiko the best, you know.

Tears fall all over her nadesiko flower. Fujitaka holds out his handkerchief.

FUJITAKA: Nadesiko-san really loved you, too.

SONOMI: But....

She imagines a smiling Nadesiko.

SONOMI: Nadesiko really looked happy after she married you. Every time I saw her....

She sobs and covers her face in her hands.

SONOMI: She had the most blissful face whenever she laughed! And she was so happy! Why did she have to die so soon?

Fujitaka puts his arm around her as she cries.

FUJITAKA: Gomen ne.

SONOMI: Why are you apologizing?!

FUJITAKA: Because from when she was 16 years old until she was 27, I stole time with Nadesiko away from you.

Sonomi abruptly stops crying and stretches out his cheeks.

SONOMI: I hate when you say things like that!

Sakura and Tomoyo walk away, holding hands.

SAKURA: That "little girl who looked like me" was okaa-san, wasn't it?

TOMOYO: My mother often talks about her cousin named "Nadesiko-san." She suggested I grow my hair long like this because she wanted me to look like Nadesiko-san.

SAKURA: I guess our parents have a long history together. I wonder if they'll tell us someday.

TOMOYO: Yeah, I'm sure they will.

SAKURA: But your mother really loved okaa-san.

TOMOYO: Well, I really love you, Sakura-chan!

SAKURA: Me, too!

Touya waves at them from across the courtyard.

TOUYA: Hey! It's almost time for the closing ceremonies!

SAKURA: Hai! Let's go, Tomoyo-chan!

TOMOYO: Okay!

Tomoyo smiles as she watches Sakura run ahead.

CLOSING THEME MUSIC: "Groovy"
