Collins and George find jobs
No, not in the local pizza joint or grocery store, but they did found homes with NFL teams on Monday. Kerry Collins signed with the Titans and Jeff George (remember him?) signed with the Raiders. I don’t understand either signing, Collins is not better than Billy Volek, and they drafted Vince Young. George, has not thrown a pass in the NFL in 5 years, so why would the Raiders pull him out of from the depth of society? Well, regardless of the reason, neither QB should be considered in fantasy leagues, but if your league requires drafting “team QBs”, then this information is important to know because personally, I would not want either one QBing my fantasy team.
Guys climbing up the draft boards
Here is a list of guys that you may not heard of because they are not ranked in many fantasy magazines, but they are having good preseasons and have put themselves into the picture in their respective offenses.
Jerious Norwood – Even before TJ Duckett got traded, Norwood was lighting up the Atlanta camp. Which is part of the reason Duckett was traded. Granted that Norwood is not a goal line type RB, but his speed and quickness will get him involved in the offense every week. If you end up drafting Warrick Dunn, this is a guy you want to look at late in the draft, but not too late, he is becoming a known commodity.
Greg Jennings – Green Bay Rookie WR has been impressive, so much that he may actually be starting alongside WR Donald Driver week #1. He is someone to consider since all expectations will be Favre throwing the ball downfield more often than not. Jennings will likely be drafted around the middle rounds with the news of him starting.
Wali Lundy / Vernand Morency – RB Domanick Davis’ injury is beginning to frighten everyone. The latest news on Davis being that he will not be ready by the beginning of the season, and maybe out much longer than expected or even waived. Any Reggie Bush regrets yet? Well, there are 2 RB’s battling for Davis’ backup position and both have had great camps. The word I hear is that Lundy has the edge in that category. However, that is not to say that Morency has been disappointing, he has played well also. Anyone who has had their draft already and selected Davis with an early pick, get on the Waiver Wire and select one of these 2 (or maybe both, just to be sure). If you have not had your draft yet, Lundy and Morency have been going in the middle rounds with this latest news on Davis.
Vincent Jackson – He is 6’5”, 240 lbs, a huge target for QB Philip Rivers. As a matter of fact, since both have played together on the second team the last few years, they already have a chemistry established. Now both are thrown into the starting offense, Rivers at QB, and Jackson as the 3rd WR. Also, with WR Keenan McCardell being 36 this season, not a bad time to give the young guy more playing time. Another late round option in leagues. And another huge target other than TE Antonio Gates.
Brandon Marshall – “Baby T.O.” is his nickname. Not for his antics, but for his talents. This Denver rookie WR has been impressive in camp and has beaten out everyone else at the WR position, other than Rod Smith and Javon Walker. Smith is 36 and Walker is coming off a serious knee injury. How can anyone not consider the 3rd WR, with those starting WR issues, in an offense that is well balanced between the running and passing games. I have only seen him drafted in the last few rounds of the draft, so if you have the extra roster spot, nab him.
Musa Smith – The forgotten man in Baltimore, as they traded for RB Mike Anderson, in case of a Jamal Lewis breakdown like he did last season. RB Lewis was terrible for fantasy owners, and the passing game didn’t help his cause as defenses stacked the line against him. But the surprise from the Baltimore camp the last few weeks has been RB Musa Smith. He has been playing extremely well, and to the point that if Lewis is not successful again this year, it will be Smith, not Anderson, who will take over the RB reigns. Consider him as your Lewis insurance in drafts.
Devery Henderson – Since WR Donte Stallworth was traded to the Eagles, WR Henderson slides into the #2 position for the Saints. Many magazines predicted that Stallworth will be the #1 stud with Brees at QB, and WR Joe Horn getting older. But apparently that’s no longer the case since Stallworth got traded. Henderson has done a good job and deserves the starting spot opposite Horn. Henderson was being drafted late in leagues, I would imagine that now that he is a starter, he will move up a few rounds. 2006-08-29 21:01:42 GMT
