Scene 11
We are back in the
USO, and everything is exactly as it was in Scene 4. The band is the same,
and so are the SERVICEMEN and the GIRLS and BUZZ. The difference is that
now it is all bathed in a rose-colored glow, everything is done in pantomime,
and JOLENE is no longer there. In her place is DIXIE ANN, reacting to everything
exactly as Jolene had done. DIXIE ANN asks for a cigarette, chooses one
pack, BUZZ and the YOUNG SOLDIER and TWO SAILORS all ask her to dance.
She politely refuses. THEY go off and dance with others. The HANDSOME SAILOR
appears, takes her cigarette, stomps it out, leads her by the arm to the
dance floor and holds her ever so close.
HANDSOME SAILOR
In a crowded room,
On a busy street,
You don't know why,
But your eyes will meet.
And soon you're floating
In some magic dance---
That's true romance,
That's true romance.
(This time no one
stops to look in surprise. They all accept his bursting into song and continue
dancing.)
HANDSOME SAILOR
On a lonely road,
A deserted square,
You look up and see
He is standing there.
And soon you're certain
By his loving glance,
It's true romance,
It's true romance.
You think it's perfectly grand
When he says "hello";
You find he's taking your hand
And will never let go,
He'll never let go.
Such things that happen
Are never by chance---
It's true romance,
It's true romance.
(THEY continue to
dance, and HE kisses DIXIE ANN passionately.)
SLOW CURTAIN
