Dr. Condoleezza Rice
National Security Advisor
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear Dr. Rice:
On the eve of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to our country, my wife and I
wish to appeal to you. We ask your support to Taiwan by insisting on American
values of freedom and democracy. As Taiwanese American, we are alarmed by
the widely-reported intention of Mr. Wen's push of the United States to oppose
Taiwan independence.
As we all know, Taiwan is a fully democratic country. On the other hand,
China is a dictatorial communist state. The United States, as the world
leader of freedom and democracy, should endorse the practice of democracy in
Taiwan. The practice of democracy includes referendums for the Taiwanese
people to freely determine their own future. Whether or not Taiwan opts
for de jure independence is a decision for the people at Taiwan to make and for
other nations, including China and our country, to respect. The United
States should dissuade China from threatening war against Taiwan.
Permitting a dictatorship to invade and annex a democracy is contrary to
America's belief in freedom and democracy and harmful to our national
interests. After all, our democracy is more solid and secure when the rest
of the world is also democratic.
In April, 2001, President Bush proclaimed that he would do "whatever it
took to help Taiwan defend herself". We are grateful for President
Bush's strong commitment to a free Taiwan. We trust that you will
abide by the President's pledge and reject any demand from Mr. Wen for the
United States to oppose Taiwan independence. Thank you very much for your
attention.
Truly yours,
