| The Locations of Angons Found in England At the time of the Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain the barbed spear was waning in favor of the more numerous leaf-shaped spear. But as the map below shows, a fair number of angons have been discovered in England, especially in the southeast where some of the earliest warriors settled. Although the Britons called these Germanic people 'Saxons', Anglo-Saxon sources tell us that Hengist brought reinforcements from Angeln. It is believed that the Saxons got their name from a weapon that they often used, a long knife called the seax. And how many of these seaxes have been found that date to the fifth century? None. Zero. |
