Dark Scandinavians, continued BELOW: The Victorian antiquarian George Stephens couldn't understand why so many of his English colleagues were Germanophiles. He wrote: "German nationality is not ours; certainly its faults are not our faults. Their speech is not ours, their body, mind, and soul, and tendencies are far from being ours, which are altogether cast in the Northern [Scandinavian] mould, in our opinion one much purer and more noble...As a people we are an independent race, of ancient north extraction and speaking a Northern tongue...our nearest homeland is Denmark; our furthest kin-land is Germany." Stephens would be pleased to know that a recent DNA study proves that the people of his home county are directly descended from Scandinavians that settled in England over a thousand years ago.
XXXBELOW: The author Angus Konstam has written over a dozen books, including the Historical Atlas of the Viking World. The publisher tells us that "It is not only his knowledge and experience that make him uniquely qualified to write a comprehensive guide to the period of the Vikings, hailing from the Orkney Isles, he can also lay claim to Viking ancestors." DNA studies have proven that the Orcadians are descended from Norwegian Vikings.
BELOW: Although the Englishman shown below has brown hair and eyes, the German scholar Hans Gunther described him as being "Predominately Nordic". In an attempt to show how purely nordic the Germans were, Gunther studied the physical characteristics of thousands of German, British, and American World War I soldiers. To his surprise, he found the British and American volunteers to be more nordic-looking than the German conscripts.
