What's the Story, Mornin' Glory?

It's hard for us here to be reporting this to you, but it does seem to be a fact.

Night of the Living Dead
(1968)

Two siblings go to a graveyard to pay respects to their late father. After being there for a little while, the brother, Johnny (Russell Streiner), becomes bored and tries to scare his sister Barbara (Judith O’Dea) by claiming that the only other man in the graveyard was out to get her. Unfortunately, he was right and the man attacks her. When Johnny tries to save her the man kills him. Barbara narrowly escapes by rolling her car down the hill and then running into a house. There she meets a man named Ben (Duane Jones). Barbara is not much help as Ben boards up the house and discovers their attackers fear fire and light.

Later on they discover two couples and a young child in the basement. One of the men, Harry Cooper (Karl Hardman) is ornery and causes a lot of trouble, almost getting Ben killed. After watching the emergency broadcast they decide to make a run for it to the nearest “safety camp” set up by the military. Will they ever make it outside the house alive?

Survey SAYS...

To be honest, I was dreading watching this movie. When a movie is labeled “cult classic” usually that means, “painfully crappy and boring, but for some reason a group of people are obsessed with it.” So far, every true “cult classic” movie I’ve watched was pretty crappy. Night of the Living Dead? It wasn’t so bad. I was impressed that it wasn’t as boring as it seemed like it was going to be. You can definitely see where every zombie flick and probably any horror movie after 1968 involving unexplainable forces got their ideas from. I wonder if people who used Night of the Living Dead as their inspiration had to pay Romero royalties. Literally, all these movies are just like this one. There’s even a very similar scene in Resident Evil 4. Craziness. It’s weird to see the root of it all. Anyway, for something labeled a “cult classic” it was actually pretty good. However…

I have one huge bone to pick with the movie. What the hell is up with the ending? I don’t mind unhappy endings and all, but when endings like this happens after spending the entire movie fighting and struggling, it makes the entire movie pointless. Like, wow, I just spent a whole hour and a half watching this movie and then it’s like nothing happens. The ending kind of ruins the whole movie, so it got docked a Burt. One thing this movie was totally missing was the mindless murmur of the undead grunting “brains!” They were so silent that I felt the need to talk for them. So, if you like...naked zombie booty, bug eating, reuse of actors, marauding ghouls, intestines, eating of family members, death by trowel, and disappointing endings. This is the flick for you. As for us...we give Night of the Living Dead
