Due to my close ties with the Football Federation I had a chance to get to know our famous football players, coaches and other sport officials in person. In Soviet time we had a very good team 'PAMIR' (Dushanbe), which played in the Soviet Premier League and was the only Central Asian. Unfortunately, after the dissolution of the USSR most of the players left the country for other famous clubs of Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, and Europe. Some of these Tajik football 'stars' are still playing. Here just several of them I was able to find on the Internet. Despite the five-year civil war in our country, football is alive in Tajikistan and still popular. Now we are members of AFC and Tajikistan national team is doing first steps on the international arena. Maybe these steps are not as succesful as it was anticipated but we are currently 120-125 team of the world (among 202 countries) and hopefully will soon close the gap between us and the top Asian teams and move up in FIFA World Ranking. |
