Barbara Hoy, eldest daughter of Scottish parents William Hoy and
Margaret Brown, was born in Downie Township, Perth County,
Ont., Canada, 6 Jul 1852. This may have been about four years
after her parents arrived in Canada from near Hawick, Berwickshire
Scotland. She married Thomas Cairns of Plympton Township,
Lambton County, Ontario 11 June 1875.
Thomas the second youngest son of James Cairns and Elizabeth
(Betsy) Anderson, also both of Scotland, was born in Plympton
       Township 16 June 1849.

Records states: Thos. Cairns age 25 years, residence Downie
born in Canada, bachelor, Occupation Farmer, son of James
Cairns and Elizabeth Anderson: Barbara Hoy age 22 years,

Presbyterian for both groom and bride. Married by Rev. John K.

Shortly following the birth of their 3rd child, Barbara and Thomas
arrived in Manitoba on 10 May 1879. They settled first in the
Gladstone and later moved to the Emmeline District. There were
8 more children born to this couple before Barbara died of
Tuberculosis in 1897. She is buried in the Austin Cemetery.
William Cairns, Thomas' brother wrote in 1931 about Thomas
Cairns and Barbara Hoy. "Thomas Cairns married Barbara Hoy.
Her father and Thomas' mother were first cousins. He got her in
Downie Township from her father's home near Avonton. They came
to Manitoba in 1879. Mrs. Cairns died in 1897 and Thomas lives
retired in MacGregor, Manitoba. Their family losses were very
severe. Only one son and four daughters are alive. Two of the
boys lie in Flanders, died in honour of their country. Russell is
working near MacGregor and stops with his folks at times. Annie
is in Vancouver. Her husband has a wholesale fruit business. The
other girls lived on farms and are all great housekeepers. Their
families are all recorded in this tree."

The following is taken from the obituary printed in the MacGregor
       Newspaper, Thursday 15 July 1943.
"The death occurred in the Portage General Hospital on July 7th,
1943 of another pioneer of the Austin and MacGregor districts,
in the person of Mr. Thomas Cairns, at the ripe age of 94 years.
He had been in failing health for some time.
Born at Plympton, Ontario on June 6th 1849, Thomas Cairns was
married to Barbara Hoy of Stratford in 1873. (Note: the
registration for this marriage gives the date as 1875). On May 10th
1879, they arrived in Manitoba, settling for a time at Gladstone
and later moving to the Emmeline district. Mrs. Cairns pre-deceased
her husband on August 21, 1897, and in 1915, Mr. Cairns moved
       to MacGregor to reside.
Mr. Cairns was a man who was well-known and highly respected,
being a good neighbor and a kind father. In latter years his hearing
and eye-sight failed, but he had been faithfully cared for by his

The following article was printed in the Free Press probably
in early to mid 1917 with a picture of the 2 boys.

E.L.H. W. Cairns (Left) and Pte. G.C. Cairns

The names of these two young men, Pte. Lindsay H.W.
Cairns, and Pte. Garnet C. Cairns have been inscribed on
Canada's glorious roll of honor, both having made the
supreme sacrifice in France, the former on June 27th and
the latter on October 26th. That they were loyally willing and
and proud to do their bit for king and country is evidenced
by the patriotic emblems which surround their photograph.
The sentiment connected with this picture is one of these
human and patriotic touches of the war. It was received by
their father, Mr. Thomas Cairns, of MacGregor, but a short
time before the news of their being killed in battle was
received, accompanied by messages of courage and hope
and determination to play their part manfully. They were good
examples of those thousands of gallant sons that have been
given by Canada for the great cause of human liberty and
justice, whose fame will be undying.
The brothers left Winnipeg with Lt.-Col. Gillespie's battalion
in October of last year. Another member of the Cairns family,
Russell, offered his services three times and has finally been
accepted. William Cairns a well-known business man of
MacGregor, is an uncle of these splendid lads. - Free Press.
