HP57 Halifax
PLANE TYPE Heavy bomber (B-Mk.III) The project of the "Halifax" began with the bi-motor configuration to respond to a specify of Air Minstry in 1935. The project wasn't approved , but from it it derivated the HP 56 that was originated by a 1936 specify about a medium/heavy bomber. The Handley Page modified itself the specify and created the HP 57, bigger and with Rolls Royce Merlin engines. In 1937 the factory obtained the authorization to build two prototypes. After the early testings, the "Halifax" was ordered for the series production; the first B MK.I entered service in November 1940 , made thier first combat mission in March 1941 some days after the first night bombing on german territory. The plane vas further developed and upgraded, with the creation of numerous versions. With the "Lancaster" and the "Stirling" it made the backbone of the Bomber Command for all the war. The conformation was so flexible that the plane was used also as a maritime patrol and as a transport. The plane remained in service until 1947 and after 90 exemplars were converted as "Halton" Mk.I, a civilian transport for the BOAC.
