Fairey "Swordfish"
TYPE Embarked torpedo bomber (Mk.II) Derivated from the precedent biplane TSR.I , that got lost in an incident in 1933, the TSR.II was the plane proposed by Fairey to fullfil a specify of British Air Ministry for an embarked recon plane. The series "Swordfish" Mk.I, that entered service in February 1936, had an entirely metallic structure and other embarked plane characteristics. At the beginning of the WW2 the Fleet Air Arm had 13 squadrons of "Swordfish", a plane that will became famous many times. The most important action was the attack to Italian fleet in Taranto 's seaport ( 11 November 1940 ), when 4 ships (of that 2 were battleships) were sunk and other were damaged by two waves of 21 "Swordfish" that took off from the carrier "Illustrious". Only 2 planes were shot down in the attack. After 1942 the plane was surpassed for torpedo-bombing role and was employed in anti-submarine missions and was dotated with a radar (Mk.III) and with air-surface rockets.
