The first place team of Amrik Ajimal, Alex Salazar and Luis Ponce showered 19 rockets within 10 yards of these creatures only to find that Doc & Smell's noxious humors repelled their mighty efforts. The second place team of Tammy Kim, Natasha Del Cid and Tanya Kivman along with the third place team of Stan Tolesnikov, Neda Davarinejad and Todd Christensen also did much for the cause of real science. | The mighty water rockets of the Noble Physics Alliance of Dredge & Derf (aka John Edge and Fred Carrington) struck a blow for real science against the Twin Towers of Mediocrity, Doc & Smell (aka Andrew Peterson & Mel Stave), who are proponents of the lesser sciences of chemistry and biology. | Rocket Day was a smashing success at Grant High School this year The kids had been waiting all year for this special day. This was Grant's Seventh Annual Rocket Day and some 100 plus students from four classes were out on the field trying to clobber the targets. Every year the launchers and rockets get better and this year was no exception. I can say without a doubt that I have never seen such quality work in my 40 years of teaching. The students were given a goal to build a launcher and any number of water rockets they wanted to launch at two targets (seen above) some 80 yards down the school football field. The students were scored on the number of close hits (and direct hits if they ever get one) they could get in two 15-minute periods, on period for each target. The rules were simple -- no commercial launchers, rockets made of two-liter soda bottles, and pressure supplied only by foot or hand air pumps. It was a grand site to behold, rockets flying in rapid succesion and landing within feet of the designated targets. (The beautiful rocket you see above was the handiwork of the third place team of Neda, Stan and Todd.) The kids really get into Rocket Day and decorate their site, launchers and rockets in creative ways. The two groups below are showing their support for the fight against terrorism with their patriotic themes. |

| This year Dredge's kids (John Edge) joined Derf's (Fred Carrington) in firing their rockets at images of two of their favorite science teachers, Mel (Smell of biology) Stave and Andy (Doc of chemistry) Peterson. These kids really got into the spirit of the competition and built some first-class launchers.
