POPSICLE BRIDGE CONTEST
2002
GRANT HIGH SCHOOL, Van Nuys, CA
                          2002

The 8th Annual Popsicle Bridge Contest was held on Friday, February 22ns, 2002 at California State University at Long Beach.  The contest was  sponsored by the Young Member's Forum of the Southern California Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers.  This year 60 teams participated from over 40 Southern California schools and Grant High School came out with first and second place in two categories, strongest bridge and largest strength to mass ratio.

The day was not without drama as one of the judges, just minutes before the busting, declared our bridges disqualified!  The ruling was due to roadway sticks that were 1 millimeter  too long.  It was a minor infraction and one we could have fixed had we found out in the morning when the judging takes place.  The ruling was finally overtuned (after some heated discussion} and we went on to win the contest for the 6th time in 8 years.

Many thanks to the volunteers who made the whole thing happen.  It was a great day for all and I am very proud of the great showing of our young people from Gran

The winning bridge (it  took a whopping 1380 pounds) is proudly displayed by its designers and builders Haroutyan Gevorgyan, (Fred Carrington coach/teacher), Gor Mnatsakanyan, and Varazdat Avetisyan (the Armenian Mafia)
Some of the bridges didn't fare so well busitng with forces sometimes as low at 50 pounds.  It takes a great deal of skill and patience to build a winning bridge.
Erik Litwin displays his second place bridge that took 1170 pounds (the one the left - the other is his backup bridge.)
The bridge on the left  took 1380 pounds (Armenian Mafia) before breaking and the one on the right took 1170 pounds(Erik Litwin).  These two bridges were #1 & #2 out of 60 bridges at the annual  Popsicle Bridge Contest at Cal St. Long Beach..
