1-Rogers Genealogy By Velma Ann Rogers Tower 1-1 Thomas Rogers
Thomas Rogers #1 was born ca 1740 in Virginia, parents unknown as of 1993. From the Virginia Magazine of History, we learn that he was living on the land in 1765.(Since Mom wrote this we have found that the Thomas Rogers in this deposistion was only 46 years old in 1811/12. That would make his birth year as 1765/66. We believe him now to be the son of Dauswell who we believe is the brother to our Thomas.)P.R. The land lies in the Cumberland Gap Area. At some time it became a part of the State of Tennessee, probably when the State line between Tennessee and Virginian was finally settled. His land was in the Kyle's Ford area. In 1790. his name appeared on a Tally Sheet for an election in Hawkins County, Sate of North Carolina. There were 217 voters and he was number 101. The Tally sheet was begun 8 March 1790 to elect a Representative to Congress from Hawkins County, Western District. Wm. Cocke, John Sevier, and John Rhea were candidates. Wm. Cocke native son won easily. Thomas Henderson, James Berry and Daniel Hamlin were appointed Inspectors by the Court. After sunset on the 9th of March 1790, Justice of Peace, Thomas Amis, signed and attested that this was a true poll for Hawkins County, State of North Carolina.
In 1811, Thomas #1 made his will and it was filled in Hawkins County Tennessee. He divided his land equally between his sons Dauswell and Thomas #2. His wife, not named, and four daughters were given portions.
In 1812 Dauswell and Thomas #2 were listed on the Tax Roll of Hawkins County with 75 acres each. 1-1 Thomas Rogers born 1740 Va. Married Jane or Jean (I tend to think Jane because his son Dauswell named one of his daughters Jane.)(I have viewed a copy of the original will and on it, the name appears as Jean, Eleanor Rogers Edmonson thinks so also.P.R.)br> Children 2-1-s. Rogers Genealogy by Velma Ann Rogers Tower Virginia Magazine of History The Indians became troublesome in 1774 and continued so for several years. William McAfee settled on Sinking Creek of New River in 1774. In the same year Andrew Cowan settled on the North Fork of Clinch, which was called Sim's Creek. Hugh Gullion had a settlement on Walker's Creek in 1774. He was killed at Point Pleasant. In 1775, William Fitzgerel mad a crop of corn at Martin's Station in Powell's Valley and made an improvement near Cumberland Gap on a Creek called Station Creek. William Herbert was living on Reed Creek in 1776. The Indians attacked the settlement on Cubb Creek in 1776 and killed some people. They were very troublesome in Washington Co. from 1770 to 1779. Titis and John Benton were killed Rye Cove in 1777. Charles Carter had settled there in 1775. This settlement was broken up by the Indians for several years. Felty Hoover and his sons, John and Abraham, settled on Black Water at the Flat Lick, a north branch of Clinch, in 1777. Thomas Rogers was living on the land in 1765 when he was driven off by the Indians. The land lies in Lee County near Cumberland Gap, it had been originally improved by John Wallen about 1760. In 1778 Joseph Drake, who had moved from Sinking Creek to New River, on account of the Indians moved to Kentucky, where he was killed by the Indians. In the spring of 1781, all the settlers in Turkey Cove in Powell's Valley moved out because of Indians. And thus the tide again receded . But when it returned, the breach in the barrier had been accomplished, the channel was open, the floods flowed in whirling and swirling and seething to the vortex from north, east, Southeast; hordes of Presbyterian Irish of Welsh and Dutch, of English Baptist and Episcopalians, of Carolina Refugees, seeking surcease from persecution and convention in the land of freedom and fatness-Kentucky. 1811/12 Lee County Virginia Deposistion Question by Mr. McKinney--Did you superintend the original survey made for Belfour? Was it made before I bought and had you any other directions than to make it agreeable to the location and the natural boundaries adjoining? Answer--I directed the original survey round to the best of my memory. I had no directions to make it otherwise than agreeable to the location and the adjoining natural boundries, but I do know whether the survey was made before or after you purchased but I suppose it was made before. Question by Mr. Preston--Where was it that Thomas Wallin told you this was the Lick branch? Answer--At Mr. Rollers about 8 miles from this. Question by the same--How do you know that this was the branch and how did he designate the branch? Answer--He mentioned the branch at Hoosers improvement, but did not mention which improvement of the Hoosers. It is about a mile from this to the foot of Powells Mountain. his William Roberts Mark(looks like a side wise 8) Isaac Fulkerson
Thomas Rogers about 46 years of age a witness produced sworn and examined on the part of John McKenny and in the suits above mentioned disposeth as follows: That he was at Mr. Rollers where heard Thomas Wallin about 10 years ago sworn in some controversey where he deposed that the branch where John Wallen then lived was called the Lick Branch, that the branch above this was called the Flat Lick Branch. The branch next below this was the Stoney Lick branch. The next below that was the Turkey Lick branch and that these were all the lick branches he knew of and that he had been acquainted with this county for neary forty years and that this Deponent says John Wallen lived then where he lives now. Question by Mr. McKinney--Do you know if John Benton and Titus was killed by the Indians and at what time? Answer--We heard they were killed by the Indians and about 36 years ago or 35 Question By Mr. Preston-- How long have you been in this county? Answer--About 12 years Question by the same--How so you know they were killed so long ago?(This Thomas would have been about 10 years old.P.R.)(They came ca. 1792 the 2nd time. He signed 1792 petition for creation of Lee Co.E.R.E.) Here is Thomas Rogers born 1765 saying these same words.E.R.E. Answer--I was living here about 35 or 36 years ago when we were driven off by the Indians. And to the best of my memory I heard of their being killed about that time. Question by Mr. Preston--Was David McKennys land, Elisha Wallens land, and your field near Mr. McKennys line all in cultivation last season? Answer--Prt of D. McKinneys was, almost all of Elisha's was all that was cleared of my field was. Question by Mr. McKinney--Do you know if there be a row of Knobs on the northwest side of my land so brlken that a road can only be got thro now and then with convinience? Answer--There is such a ridge of Knobs below Elisha Wallens that a road can be got thro only in one place with convincence. Question by the same--Does not the row of Knobs or ridge close in upon the Creek and make a clift just below my place?
Answer-- It does Question by Mr. Preston-- Do you know Mr. McKennies lines on the nowrth west of his land? Answer--I know it from the NW corner about a quarter of a mile upwards, but no farther. Question by Mr. McKinney--Is the line where you know it pretty well up to the top of ridge? Answer--It is.
Thomas Rogers (his signature) Isaac Fulkerson
James Rogers aged about 41 years produced sworn and examined on the part of the said John McKenny and in both suits deposeth as follows: that as he saw the controveted land resurveyed the other day discovered that better land had been left out of Mr. McKenney survey at the upper end and worse land taken in at the lower end of it. Question by Mr. McKenny--Are there any branches between this and old Hoosers improvement that water runs in all the year? Answer--Not that I know of.
James Rogers mark x Isaac Fulkerson (Dauswell Rogers) Question by same-- Do you know any place near where John Wallen now lives that was known by the then name of the Big Bottom? Answer--I know of no place so called except the bottom where Jacob Rowlers now lives about the distance of 6 or 7 miles from there down the same creek, which name was given to it by myself, some of the Wallins and Bentons and William Roberts and others as we once passed through it hunting lands.(This is why we believe Dauswell was a longhunter.P.R.&E.R.R.) Question by same-- Do you know any place in Black Water joining Ozburns land, called the Big Bottoms? Answer--I do. Question by same-- Did you understand that the Big Botttoms on Black Water belonged to Rober Preston? Answer--It was called Prestons Land but which of the Prestons I cannot say. Question by same--Do you know how long it is since John and Titus Benton was killed by the Indians? Answer--I think 35 or 36 years in April next. Question by Mr. Preston--At the time that you and others gave name of Big Bottom to the place where Roler now lives were you then acquainted any higher up the North fork of Clinch? Answer--I was not. Question by Mr. McKinney--Does the bottom at Rolers still retain the name of the Big Bottom? Answer--I call it so and have heard others call it so but not within 10 or 20 years. Question by the same--Do you remember as my coming to this Co. to purchase land of hearing Mr. John Wallin recommend the land which is the subject of the present controvery as a proper purchase for me to make? Answer--I did I mean the land where you now live and I thought it was all one tract. Question by Mr. Preston--How long has it been since you last moved to Clinch River? Answer--Some where about 17 or 18 years ago-- and further this Deponant sayth not.

Generations Thomas 1 Thomas 2
2-6-s.Thomas Rogers 2 was born ca. 1780 in Hawkins County Tennessee, the 6th child of Thomas 1. He married but we do not know the name of his wife. One son, Jesse is the only child that we have knowledge of. In an early deed Jesse and Walling Rogers were partners. It seems reasonable that they might be brothers. There is record of an Adenstone Rogers born 1803 whose father has not been established.
In the 1830 census of Hawkins Co. Tn., he had in his household a wife and two young males. In the 1840 census he had a wife and one young female.
Jesse was living next door to Thomas in 1830 with four young males and a wife, Lucinda Rice. Later it has been established ath the young males were sons of Jesse and Lucinda. 1-Thomas, 2-Erastus,3-Edmond,4-Caliway.
In view of the age of Jesse and the other children in the household of Thomas 2 it seems logical that Thomas might have been married twice and the younger children were from a second marriage but this an assumption only.
In the Richardson Church Records of Hawkins Co. were the names of Thomas Rogers and Elizabeth Sr. and an Elizabeth Jr. This might be the family of Thomas 2. Also in the same record was a Rial Rogers and wife, Jane, and daughter Lurinda.
Thomas Rogers 2 was named in the will of Thomas 1 as was his brother Dauswell and four sisters, Martha, Betty, Susana and Molly. ( We now know that Betty is Elizabeth and married Drury Holt, P.R.)

Thomas 1 and Jane Elizabeth Rogers and Drury Holt
2-3-d. Elizabeth/Betty/Betsy was the daughter of Thomas Rogers and Jane? She married Drury Holt in Hawkins Co. Tn. Drury was born Dec.29, 1759 in Albermarle Parish, Sussex, Va. He was the son of Nathaniel and Abigail Clanton Holt. He died Feb 16 1835 in Pine Knot, Whitley Co. Ky. Elizabeth was born VA/TN in 1774 according to my records and the census. She died 1854 in Whitley Co. Ky. The following information was given to me by Ellen English. I cannot make it work with the birth date of their first child. Either that is wrong or Drury was married before at a young age and had these older children.
Children---------
3-1-d. Mary born abt 1774 in Cumberland Co. Ky. I think this should at least be 1884 judging by Thomas Holt. Still to soon for it to be Elizabeth’s child. Married abt. 1789 in Whitley Co. Ky. Died Jan 26, 1874 in Horsehead Creek, Johnson Co. Ark. Spouse John Ryan.

7-Lucy Holt born abt. 1772 married Dec. 6, 1799 in Sussex Co., Va. To Willie Clark
1-Thomas Rogers 2-Thomas Rogers 2 3-Jesse Rogers
3-1-s. Jesse Rogers, son of Thomas Roger 2, was listed in the 1830 census of Hawkins County Tennessee as living next door to Thomas Rogers 2 son of Thomas Rogers 1.He had a wife and four young sons in his household. Next door to Jesse Rogers lived John Mink who married Nancy Rogers, daughter of Dauswell Rogers who was the older brother to Thomas Rogers 2. (Some of this line of Monks moved to Oklahoma and became prominent in Oklahoma Politics. One John Monk had been a member of the Oklahoma Legislature for years.) Two doors from John Monk lived John Rogers, possibly son of Dauswell. A few doors away lived Dauswell and next door to him lived his son Larkin Rogers.
Jane Rogers, Dauswel’s daughter, married Samuel Moore. I think Samuel was from the Moore family who established Moorsburg in Hawkins County Tennessee. Another of Dauswell daughter ,Elizabeth, married Amos Roller. He died and she and at least, two of her sons moved to Missouri. When Granpa Arthur applied for a Civil War Pension, they gave him letters of recommendation. This Roller line married in to my Cook line.
Sometime in late 1830 or 1831, great grandfather Jesse moved across the State line into Scott County Va. Where Granpa Arthur was born in 1831 and Patton MC was born in 1836. This move might have been the shifting of the State line. For years there was controversy over the location of the State line. When it was finally located some landowners were left with land on both sides of the line. Sometimes the dwelling house would be in one State and the land in another.
In researching Jesse, I have found many Deeds in his name. This has led me to believe that he dealt in Real Estate. These deeds are very interesting. They were measured by the Pole and Degree. They tied a pole that usually measured 16.5 feet and the degree. The tied it behind a mule and pulled it to a certain degree and repeated it to a different degree according to direction. The map of these deeds are many and varied shapes.
Jesse married Lucinda Rice. I have been unable to find a record of their marriage. Hancock records burned and many of Hawkins records were lost during the Civil War. Lucinda was probably the daughter of John MC Rice who was in the home of Orville Rice in the 1850 census of Hawkins Co. Tn. I have based this assumption the fact that she named her youngest son Patton MC (McClellan). If Jesse and Lucinda had daughter, they were born and died between the Census years. There is a traditional story about two small graves in the breezeway of a barn where Jesse and Lucinda once lived. I can only speculate about the reason for choosing the barn hallway as a burial site. Maybe they died during an epidemic or a blizzard when that was the only spot that could be opened for a grave. Facts have been lost in time.
Jesse and Lucinda were living in Pattonsville, Scott County Virginia when the Civil War broke out. Jesse was an ardent Union Man and very outspoken about his sentiments. During the time that the Confederacy occupied Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, Jesse was taken prisoner and put in one of the Confederate prisons. Our family tradition says Andersonville, but I have found no record of him being there which does not mean that he was not there. It is possible that he was in some other Confederate Prison. He suffered great hardship and stress while in Prison. When he came home he was almost starved and broken in health. He didn’t live long after that. He made a deed after the War to the wife of his son Thomas but died before 1870. He was not in the 1870 census.
Three of Jesse’s sons were killed during the Civil War and a grandson.
1-Thomas Rogers, a stock Doctor, went out one night and didn’t return. They found him on the road next day, murdered. 2-Edmond Rogers was murdered near the end of the War by the Tennessee Home Guard which was Southern in sympathy. 3-Patton M.C.(McClellan) Rogers was home on sick leave and sitting in his cabin door taking the sunshine when he was shot by someone in the cornfield. 4-Jefferson Rogers, son of Erastus, was drafted by the Confederate Army and was killed, possibly, during a battle.
My Grandfather,Arthur Rogers, volunteered for the 1st Tennessee Cavalry (Union) from Hawkins County, Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. He came home but there was so much hatred and ill feeling that he and his brother Caliway moved to Missouri where land was cheap. Caliway moved first and then Grandpa bought land from him. He moved in early 1879.
Lucinda died before 1880. I have assumed that she died before 1879 when Grandpa moved from Scott Co. to Taney Co. Missouri. We know that Lucinda was alive May 11, 1872 when Judgement in ejection was rendered in Scott County Va. In 1870, she was living with Robert James Rogers, her grandson who was the son of Patton M.C. and Malinda Tyree.
3-1-s. Jesse Rogers was born 1801 in Hawkins Co. Tennessee; married Lucinda Rice who was born 1801 in N.C. No marriage record has been found. It was probably destroyed in Hawkins or Hancock when those records were burned.
Children------
4-1-s. Thomas Rogers born 1819 Hawkins County, Tn. Married Nancy Louisa Lewis. 4-2-s. Erastus Rogers born ca 1821 Hawkins County, Tn. Married 1st Sarah Amos, 2nd Charlotte Miller, 3ed Eliza Brooks. 4-3-s. Edmond Rogers born ca 1825 Hawkins Co. Tn. Married Mary Elizabeth Tarry. 4-4-s. Calaway Rogers born 1830 Hawkins Co. Tn. Married Winney Anderson. 4-5-s. Arthur Rogers born 1831 Scott Co. Va. Married Alcy Lawson, daughter of Dyer and Jane England Lawson. 4-6-s. Patton M.C.(McClellan) Rogers born 1836 Scott Co. married 1st Malinda Tyree married 2nd Mahala Bledsoe.
If Jesse and Lucinda had daughter, they were born and died between the Census years.
After Mom wrote this section she was given a bible record from Calaway’s Bible with the birth and death records of Jesse and Lucinda. 3-1-s. Jesse Rogers born April 24th 1801 died Nov. the 14th 1873 age 73 years, 6 months, and twenty six days. Lucinda born Sept. 22, 1800 died August 8th 1874 aged 73 , 11 months, 8days. One note on this in the bible record her name is spelled Lousinda. I have been given some information on her possible family in the Rice line. It may help having this spelling for future research.
WRIT OF EJECTMENT OF LUCINDA ROGERS,ROBERT ROGERS,LEWIS RICE-ORDER BOOK NUMBER 4
John Buchanan ) ) In Ejectment Lucinda Rogers etal, defendants)
This day came the Plaintiff by his Attorney and appearing that the Defendants have been duly server with legal Process and not appearing although solemnly called, it is considered by this Court that the Plaintiff recover against the Defendants the Misusage and lands in the declaration described and his cost by him in this behalf expended and that writ of possession issue therefor.
Robert James Rogers was the son of Lucinda's son Patton M.C. Rogers, and Linda Tyree. Lucinda and Jesse raised him. Lewis Rice, I think, was a brother to Lucinda. The land here described was the land that Jesse left when he died. I have assumed that Great Grandmother Lucinda Rice Rogers died before 1879 when Grandpa Arthur moved to Missouri. She was not in the 1880 Census. She was too old to work a farm and I guess that Robert was too inexperienced. Eula Mae McNutt of Gate City, Virginia says that he was lazy and shiftless. Her mother told her that. He may have been but remember that those were reconstruction days.

I will try to find that information and get it on later)
