Thomas Rogers, son of Jesse 4-1-Thomas Rogers, first child of Jesse and Lucinda (Rice) Rogers, was born 1819 Hawkins County Tennessee. He married Nancy Louisa Lewis, probably in Hancock County Tennessee. The Hancock Records burned and no record has been found. Nancy Louisa Lewis was born 1822 in Scott County Virginia. The name of her parents is unknown as of 1994. The name of Lewis was a well-known name in Southwest Virginia at a very early date. We're just not sure which Lewis was her father.

Sometime during the Civil War (possibly 1864) Thomas was killed, probably by Bushwackers. He was known as an animal Doctor. He went out one night and didn't come home. They found him the next day on the road dead. No one in the family ever knew for sure who killed him. They had suspicions but time has lost the name of those whom they suspicioned.
After Thomas died, Nancy took out a liscense to run a House of Entertainment (Tavern). Out of this came the story that she killed a man and hid him under leaves under a log that was used as part of a footpath. Those were troubled times in that part of the Country. Deserters from both sides preyed on the people. They rode and took their food, livestock, clothes or just anything that they took a fancy to, then there were the Bushwackers, gangs that robbed and killed both sides. The story of Nancy killing the man didn't come out until the 1980's. Eula Mae McNutt's mother told her. Until then no one but the key members of the family had ever been told.
Malissa's name has been read both ways. Eula Mae thinks it was Willesa. You need to read the Census and decide for yourself. V.T.

There were probably other children but I have no record of them. Jesse and Ruhama moved to Texas and his mother Nancy Louisa moved with them. She was very old at that time and other relatives begged her to stay with them. It was a rainy day and Nancy had nothing but a shawl for warmth, but she refused to stay in Virginia. Family tradition says that she died in Texas past the age of ninety. Jesse and Ruhama moved back and died in Va.
Tradition says Thomas, the son of Jesse and Ruhama went to Idaho 1 March 1909, but I have no proof of this.

19-Rogers Genealogy By Velma Ann Rogers Tower Generations 1-Thomas Rogers #1 2-Thomas Rogers #2 3-Jesse Rogers 4-Edmond Rogers 4-3-s. Edmond Rogers, third child of Jesse and Lucinda Rice Rogers, was born ca 1825 in Hawkins County Tn. Died 1864/65 probably Scott Co. VA. He was killed by the Tennessee Home Guard because of his commitment to fight for the Union Army. I have found no record of his Military Service. It is possible that he was killed before he could join up. He was past the age to be drafted. His older brother, Thomas, was killed one night when he had gone out on a call to doctor a sick animal. His younger brother, Patton M.C. Rogers did join the Union Army and he was shot from the cornfield while sitting in his cabin door taking the sun. He had a terrible case of diaherrea and had come home to try to recover his health. That are of Virginia and Tennessee was Confederate Territory but a large part of the population were Union in belief. Because of the split loyalty, a great number of men on both sides were ambushed and killed.
Edmond married Mary Elizabeth Tarry. I have found no information on her family background. I have record of seven children for Edmond and Elizabeth.

5-2-s. Claiborn Rogers, second child of Edmond Rogers and Mary Elizabeth Tarry Rogers was born 18 April 1848. The early Census says Scott Co. Va. Family tradition says possibly Claiborn Co. TN. The Rogers Clan moved back and forth across the State line. Sometimes they were in Hawkins Co. TN. Or Hancock or Claiborn Co. TN. Or they might have been in Lee or Scott Co. VA. This was a mountainous region and sometimes a farm would have land in both States. Tradition says that Claiborn being the oldest son avenged the death of his father, Edmond, who was killed by the Tennessee Home Guard. Clabe married Mary Willis who was born 24 Feb. 1848. They were married early 1865 in or around Blackwater, Va. Where Mary lived. Because of the danger of revenge being taken against them, they moved to Crank Creek Ky. Clabe worked as a lumberjack, farmer, part time moonshiner and coal miner to make a living. They had nine children.

1-Thomas Rogers #1 2-Thomas Rogers #2 3- Jesse Rogers 4-Arthur Rogers
4-5-s. Arthur Rogers, fifth child of Jesse Rogers and wife, Lucinda Rice, was born 19 Aug. 1831 in Scott Co. Va. Died 25 June 1920 in Taney Co. Mo.; buried in the Rogers Cemetery that was on his farm which he bought from his brother Caliway Rogers when he moved from Lee Co. Va. To Taney County Mo. In 1879.
Arthur enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 at Cumberland Gap, TN. He was placed in Co. G 4th Infantry Regiment of the Tn. Calvary but he was still in Company G. He trained at Ft. Denison in Ohio. He served as a Wagoneer, which was sometimes listed as Teamster. He was mustered out 5 June 1865 at Nashville, TN. And returned to Lee Co. Va. where his wife Alcy and children were staying with her father Dyer (Obediah) Lawson.
The story goes that Alcy cried when he enlisted, saying that he would be killed and she would be left alone with the children. He said,"No! I had a dream last night and I left by one road and returned by a different road." Thus when he left from Cumberland Gap and returned by Nashville, He felt that his dream had been fulfilled.
Another incident that he related was that on one of his hauling trips, they ran out of food and made a dry camp. An old hen ventured into their camp and they caught her and said, "The Lord has provided the meat, now if we just had a pot to cook her". He sat down and leaned his back against a tree and stuck his hands behind himself and in the leaves was an iron cooking pot. He felt that God was with him.
Arthur and Alcy were married 11 Jan. 1855, probably in Hancock Co. TN. No official record has been found. The Hancock records burned and we have assumed that the official record burned. Arthur kept good records and the date of marriage was recorded in several records. Alcy Lawson, daughter of Dyer Lawson and Jane England, was born 6 Oct. 1837 in Lee County Va.; died 20 Feb. 1880 in Taney Co. Mo. From a form of T.B. in which the arms and chest are broke out in sores that would not heal. The common opinion of our day is that it was Diabetes. She was the second person to be buried in the Rogers Cemetery. Her last child, Adelaide, was the first.

Lillie Francis suffered childbed fever after Elva was born. After that she suffered vague spells and wasn't alert as she had formerly been. I, for one, enjoyed her. I spent many happy hours with her as a child. She never lost the art of being understanding with children. I remember the rainy day that we made cookies. She let me roll and cut cookies and make designs with peanuts which we picked from the peanut hay and shelled ourselves. I had a ball, so I have very happy memories of her.
