Al Bowlly's Music

Al Bowlly CDs

"This is the CD that got everything going for me. I had been trying to figure out who sang "Love is the Sweetest Thing" which I heard in the broadcast of "Edward and Mrs. Simpson". Well, I ordered the cd on the blind chance that it could have been Al Bowlly. As it turns out, the song is included in a terrific medley on this CD. I'll never forget where I was when I heard it!
In my view, this is a real good basic primer for anybody wanting to get a feel for the era of Al Bowlly and his style of music. Al sings "Roll Along Prairie Moon", "My Woman", "Fancy Our Meeting", and the beautiful "Isn't It Heavenly?" I highly recommend this CD. Don't miss "Pennies From Heaven" by Louis Levy and his Gaumont British Symphony!
I like this little cd of Bowlly music! It has "In My Little Red Book", Did You Ever See A Dream Walking?", Two Sleepy People" ("to build this little nest, and get ourselves some rest"), and "Marie" - It also has the old standards too.
-I played this cd all during a Summer road trip last year (much to the annoyance of fellow travelers - oh well!) It's a 2cd set, and sure has a lot of good Bowlly pieces! "Hang Out The Stars In Indiana" bring tears to my eyes! There's the lilting "I've got a Date with an Angel", and "Lying In the Hay"
This CD is one of the newest additons to my collection. I think that "Be Still My Heart" is one of the saddest songs ever, and Al really feels it. "I've Got You Under My Skin" is such a nice departure from the Sinatra version(s) ---and it's quite refreshing! There's "Carelessly", and a very nice try at Blue Hawaii, that has Don Ho and Elvis beat coming and going!
This is the first in a series of stupendous CD's issued under the Vocalion label by Dutton Labs. It will go down in history as the definitive study of the work done by Ray Noble and Al Bowlly! It is peerless! The entire HMV body of work! But don't try and congratulate Michael Dutton via e-mail, because he doesn't answer your posts!! Maybe you have to bring money with you, then he might write. :)

More CDs

I was very fortunate to have the PastPerfect people send me this advance copy of one of their latest offertings. This is a wonderful cd. Beautifully packaged and nicely produced. It includes the rarer tracks; "Torn Sails" and "Dreamy Serenade". Oh Yeah, there's "Say When" - Wow! Also, the lilting "You're a Sweetheart"
This is, for both practical and sentimental reasons, one of my favorite cds. It is the definitive body of work of the great Lew Stone, and it is awash with wonderful and hard to get Al Bowlly songs! I wouldn't be alone in saying that "Mediterrean Madness" is a standout in this 3cd set. ;)
A very interesting little cd! It's presentation is such that you feel that you are listening to the radio back in 1935! There are references to "Coty" cosmetics and perfumes throughout! Great rendition of "Way Back Home".
A must for anyone who loves this kind of music, and doesn't have the songs otherwise. The 2cd set is full of great Carroll Gibbons, Al Bowlly, Hutch, Fred and Ginger, Greta Keller (who, at first, I thought was Marlene Dietrich). This is extremely smooth and sophisticated sounding! I need to be on retainer by the PastPerfect company, and I could sell this thing on Cable TV!!
What more can I say? There is a song on here called "The Eyes Of The World Are On You" performed by that great Louis Levy and the Gaumont-British Orchestra. I was jiving around the house one Friday evening while this song was cranked way up. It so happened to precipitate a fairly strong earthquake in the region.
A triumph by PastPerfect! This has such good tracks in it. Oh! that wonderful syncopated sound of the jazz age! Paul Whiteman, Jack Hylton, Joe Venuti, and songs like "Turn On The Heat", "Dinah", "Let's Do It" and "Turn On The Heat" This stuff can be unrelenting and heart pounding!
This cd opened up a whole new vista of performers for me; Hutch, Jessie Matthews, Hildegarde, Jack Buchanan. There's a witty "Something To Do With Spring" by Noel Coward.
Ok! Isn't this a smug looking Roy Fox? Just hear "Ya got Love", "Between the Devil And The Deep Blue Sea", "You're The One I Care For" - - - and you can see why old Roy Fox is smiling!
