Misc. Information: Datcher had an uneventful childhood growing up on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. Although he proved to be a good student, nothing spectacular happened in his education career until his college years. Using his talents in mathematics and the sciences, he entered university with an engineering major. It was at this time he grew to have an appreciation for subspace and temporal mechanics. He progressed quickly through his studies, but still lacked vision as to his purpose or his future.
That changed, however, when he found a book in his grandparents’ attic that was compiled by a twenty-first century ancestor of his, who happened to have the same name. In it, he read of the extraordinary career of the previous Datcher’s own grandfather. This man excelled to the point of becoming a colonel in the famed Tuskegee Airman. That biography, along with those of other heroes listed in that book gave Datcher the sense of purpose he needed.
With a future in mind, Datcher continued to study hard with the goal of entering Starfleet’s Officer Candidate School. Because of his demeanor and extensive research in the nature of time, his peers began referring to him as “The Doctor” in homage to the fictional time traveler. Upon completion of his dissertation covering the topic of abnormal time phenomena, Datcher immediately entered Officer Candidate School in its engineering department.
At Officer Training School, Datcher was able to complete the rigorous requirements needed to enter the Federation Defensive Task Force, putting to direct use his knowledge as a Starship engineer. He eventually rose through the ranks until being appointed Chief Engineer of the USS Vanguard under the command of the then Fleet Captain James Scott. Upon the promotion of Captain Scott to the Admiralty, Datcher and the majority of his engineering team transferred to the USS Frontier under the command of Captain Joanne Parry.
Aboard the Frontier, Datcher’s engineering expertise proved invaluable to the success of the ship’s missions. He even had occasion to put his hard work in temporal mechanics to work. During this time, he received commendations and grade increases until he was selected to be the Frontier’s Executive Officer. Not sure if he wanted to leave his post as chief engineer, he finally accepted the position, thinking of it as a new challenge in his career. In this position, he proved himself to be a worthy commander of the ship.
This skill was put to the test when Captain Parry was promoted to the Admiralty, leaving Datcher in charge of the ship. After his first mission, his superiors believed in his capabilities, thus appointing him permanently as the captain of the Frontier, a position he holds to this day.
