Jan's childhood was a sad one. His entire family was killed when
unknown attackers ravaged a Federation Outpost when he was just two years
old. Jan was found by Captain Alexei Stukov, Captain of the USS Moscow on
the ravaged Tarsonis Outpost. They weren't able to find any information
on the people killed there and most of them were burned beyond
recognition or vaporized. Jan carried some ID with him, stating his name,
birthday and place of birth but no record of his family what so ever. Stukov
took Jan back to Earth and his brother and his wife took him into their
family. Stukov thus became his 'foster-uncle'. Jan lived in Holland and
Russia for the next years but at the age of 8 he wanted to go into
space. Alexei Stukov, just promoted to Rear Admiral, took him with him into
space. His brother, Jans father, was not all too happy but he realised
he couldn't keep him away from Space. He lived one full year with
Stukov and their relationship grew beyond 'uncle-nephew' and they became
something like the best friends. At the age of 15, Jan enlisted into Starfleet Academy, with recommendations by Rear Admiral Alexei Stukov. He was determined to protect others from the faith that had fallen upon him. Moreover he planned to bring the murderers of his parents to justice, one day. He really rushed through the Academy. He was an outstanding tactical officer, the best gunner of his class, word had it that his photon (or quantum) torpedoes never missed their target. He was also a specialist in groundfights of any kind, well trained in several martial arts and an excellent field commander. During his first year in the Academy he was part of the "Red Squad", an elite team of Cadets. His skills as a commando gave him the nickname "The Silencer". He preferred operating the weapons on starships however. Jan also studied the Klingon Culture closely and speak fluently Klingon and learned to handle a Bat'leth suberbly. Jan also met the latest host to the Dax symbiont, Aracy Ardel, now Aracy Dax and became friends with her. During a trainingcruise in the Gamma Quadrant, his ship of Cadets witnessed a Klingon Bird-of-Prey being attacked by a Jem'Hadar attack ship. Another Attack Ship attacked Jan's ship and the Captain was killed. Jan subsequently took command and was succesful in repelling both the Jem'Hadar ships, saving the lives of his friends and that of the Klingons. The Klingon Commander, Duk'Ret, gave Jan a 70.000 year old Bat'leth in return for his aid. This was the famous Sword of Kah'less. The Sword had caused tensions among the Klingon crew, everyone was possesed by the thought of having it. Duk'Ret jugded the Sword would be safe in the hands of this young human and the crew agreed. Jan dubbed the Bat'leth 'Rusty'. Since that, Rusty accompanies Jan where ever he goes. Duk'Ret remains a close friend to Jan. Duk'Ret, his crew and Jan have so far never mentioned the true origin of this Bat'leth to anyone save for Admiral Stukov, who wondered what kind of Bat'leth Jan had brought from the Gamma Quadrant. After his Academy Time, he and his Red Squad teammates remained together and where posted the USS Potemkin, NCC 18253, Stukovs new ship. The group dubbed themselves 'The Roughnecks'. Shortly after their graduation, the Dominion War broke out in full fury and the Roughnecks were deployed on several planets, including Betazed, where a brutal stalemate occured while the Roughnecks and other units defended the planet. During later stages of the War his team was part of a ground attack force for the Chin'toka invasion. His unit became isolated on Chin'toka during the final stages of the ground invasion. Although the invasion was succesfull, his unit was cut off and isolated in old Dilithium Mines. A 3 week brutal fight in the Mines with the last Jem'Hadar was the result. Allied Commanders had simply forgotten the unit and the Mines were beneath the surface, impenetrable for standard sensorsweeps. No one knew of the existence of this last Jem'Hadar pocket, who were planning a surprise attack on the Allied Ground Forces. The team was quickly pinned down in some dead end mineshafts. The young troops were continually hammered by the Jem'Hadar forces. The brutal attacks began to wear down the team. 30 of the original 500 Starfleet Soldiers remained and most simply wanted to give up. Shell shocked, filled with the fear of death, Jan panicked during a skirmish and almost got killed when he ran straight into the arms of three Jem'Hadar. Rico and Jenkins were just in time to prevent the Jem'Hadar soldiers from cutting Jan to pieces. His action brought him near the Jem'Hadar camp however and he, Jenkins and Rico discovered the Jem'Hadar plan to finally wipe them out. They used this information to make one last desperate stand. They fortified their position and the 30 remaining men stood their ground. When the Jem'Hadar were about to launch a last all out offensive, a force of Klingon Warriors and Starfleet Marines led by the Klingon Duk'Ret and Admiral Stukov attacked the Jem'Hadar from the rear. Stukov had noticed the dissapearance of his nephew. Duk'Ret, a Klingon who owed his life to Jan, had volunteered to help and both came to the rescue of the pinned down unit. The survivors were all members of Jan's former Red Squad and all of them received commendations and battle honours. To Jan, this episode of his life remains a shamefull one, as he cracked down under the stress of battle and had panicked. After the end of the Dominion War, Stukov, then Vice Admiral, transferred to Starfleet Intelligence. Jan left the Potemkin and joined the newly formed Federation Defensive Task Force. Johnny Rico and Carl Jenkins, his best friends and most of the Roughnecks followed him to the FDTF. Derek Brentwood and Darvi Zora, other real close friends decided to go to Starfleet Academy Command School instead. They would obtain their own Commands, the USS Alexandria NCC-1866 and the USS Rutherford NCC-1835, two newly upgraded Mirandas. They would continue to serve with Jan sometimes when they roster allowed to be near his ship. Jan was posted to the USS Saragossa, under Captain Michael Nick as Sec/tac officer. He was overjoyed when a few weeks later, Aracy Dax joined the crew of the Saragossa as well.He played an active part in helping defeating the Borg when they entered sector 001. This included rescuing Adm. Slusser from the assimilated Skywalker. He followed Capt. Nick, then Rear Admiral, to the new USS Pegasus and SS Thunder, were he became Chief of Security and obtained the rank of Lt. Cmdr. Following Admiral Nick's promotion to Acting FDTF CO, Jan transfered to the Hyperion Campus. He served as a Training Officer on the USS Euphrates for a few months, instructing Cadets. With the resignation of Commander Aislin O'Malley, Jan was offered Command of the Hyperion Campus. He subsequently transformed the present Marine Base to what is now know as the Hyperion Campus. He succesfully combined the Marine and Academy facilities. The extra Starflet Personel and the huge loads of Cadets meant that Hyperion City could prosper as well and many merchants settled on the once dead, now terraformed, moon. Following the destruction of the USS Euphrates, Jan oversaw the construction of the new USS Thunderchild. Serving as the Academy for some time, Jan decided it was time to get back into space and briefly re-joined the USS Pegasus. After the Pegasus incident he became CO of the Defiant Class Ship, USS Ireland and was promoted to Captain shortly after that. The Roughnecks followed him to that ship. The Ireland was destroyed with 13 hands at the Battle at Partonis IV, battling enemy ships; she took 9 enemy fighters and one heavy frigate with her in her final blaze. Jan lead the final groundassault, leading the Roughnecks as the first wave and Stormtroopers and succesfully re-captured stolen Federation property with the combined might of the FDTF, The Federations Finest. After the battle, Jan was Court-Martialled for self-destructing his ship. All charges against him were dropped and it was jugded that Jan had followed the best course of action and had no guilt in the destruction of his ship. After the Court-Martial he was appointed Captain of the Defiant Class USS De Ruyter, the first starship to bear the name of a Dutch legend. After some changes in the FDTF Chain of Command, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and given the Command of Second Squad. The USS De Ruyter served as his Squads Flagship. In April of 2377 Jan was faced with the horror of a desk job. He subsequently resigned his commission as Squadron Commander, thinking it would be best for both him and Starfleet if he remained in the position of Starship Captain. Jan accepted a rank decreasement to Fleet Captain and remains in command of the USS De Ruyter. Jan became romantically involved with Captain Morgaine of Avalon, his Assistant Commandant in the Academy. The both were seperated again when they persued different careers but were reunited when Morgaine had given up the command of her own ship and was searching for a new assignment. Jan offered her the position as Helmsman, a decision that would bring him many many nightmares. The old romance flared up almost instantly and the two are currently still romantically engaged. Jan can get somewhat jealous if fellow offers try to make a move towards Morgaine. One of his old friends from the Potemkin, also a friend to Stukov, who had served there in the Marine Corps, experienced that the hard way. Fully knowing the facts, Petty Officer Dmitri Lukin tried to make a move towards Morgaine. In a skirmish, Lukin broke Jan's nose after which Jan broke Lukin's arm. Jan and Lukin went apart as friends after all though, but Lukin remained on the Potemkin while Jan went further with his FDTF Career. Jan is a person to be reconned with. His friend Stukov can provide him with valuable information and resources, having good connections in Starfleet Command, Starfleet Intelligence, The Starfleet Marine Corps and even to the Starfleet Commander-in-Chief (CinC) and the Federation President. Captains Brentwood and Zora are always around to lend him a helping hand should it become necessary, so is Stukov himself with the Potemkin. Jan has a good tactical mind, in Space Warfare, Ground Fighting, Corridor Fighting...virtually every form of Combat. But he is always aware of the fact that he is not immortal and he has a great sense of responsibility to his ship and his crew and his fellow Starfleet Officers. Jan does not step outside the Chain of Command, unless it should become truly necessary. Jan is known for his rather stoicisism, a factor he shares with his friend and 'uncle' Stukov. Yet Jan is far from stoicine, he just prefers to keep his emotions in check when on active duty. Emotional outburts had almost cost him his life once and he was determined not to let that happen again. Jan is haunted by faint images of his parents, killed in a pirate attack. He sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night due to those nightmares. Combined with his tendency to run double shifts it results in fatigue and stress. This has decreased significantly since the start of his relationship with Morgaine. Yet a new problem has started to emerge is his love for his XO, Morgaine of Avalon. So far, he had been able to seperate duty and private life, but it has become increasingly difficult. Jan is currently trying to overcome this problem. Morgaine and Starfleet are the things that make up his life. His other hobbies are 0-G handball and (normal) baseball & Ice Hockey and the history of 20th Century Earth. Jan also likes to read good novels dating back to the 19th and 20th Century and enjoys listening to music from the late 20th Century. |
