Pink Grease - Sheffield Casbah, August 2003
The bass player’s hanging from the ceiling, the guitarist looks like he’s about to explode and their singer, Rory, (who looks like the love child of Iggy Pop and Elizabeth Taylor) has the audience in a fixed gaze while screaming his heart out.
This is Pink Grease’s homecoming show and the atmosphere in the Casbah is a fitting one - hot, sleazy and packed to breaking point with Sheffield’s oddities.
Although the shortness of the set reflects the fact they’ve only got a mini-album and two singles under their (skinny fit) belts, the sheer energy and attitude the put into performing makes up the deficit.
So they’re shambolic at times and you’d probably run a mile if you met them on a dark night, but they’re also got a unique charm that means they’re not going to be playing in venues this small for long.
