Skin – Manchester Academy 3, September 26th

When Delilah cut Samson’s hair it robbed him of his strength and power but in a twist to the tale, the regrowth of former Skunk Anansie front woman Skin’s locks seems to have only added to her already amazing vocal range and performance.

In town for the first date on a tour to promote her debut solo album and returning to a venue she last played at the very start of her career, you would expect a certain amount of trepidation on her part. However, from the moment she hits the stage, her fiery eyes transfix the audience in a menacing stare and a Cheshire Cat grin spreads across her face like a crocodile that’s just spotted its prey.

With a set consisting of tracks from 'Fleshwounds' as well as classics from her former band, her brief hiatus hasn’t mellowed the gusty performance. Even the appearance of a bra thrown from the crowd can’t faze her but produces a cackle of; “Who do you think I am? Tom Jones?”.

Ending with a spectacular ‘Twisted (Everyday Hurts)’ that breaks into ‘Heart of Glass’, she leaves the stage to an audience desperate for more. Not bad for a girl whose real name is Deborah...
