Melanie, 45, and Roberto, 49, live in Irvine, California, with one very spoiled tuxedo cat named Grunky. We have been together for 20 years and married for 15. Roberto (Raz) is an alumnus of both Caltech and UCLA. He is a software engineer for a small dot-com start-up in Orange County after leaving Xerox Corp., where he was employed for many years. I (Melanie) have a degree is in computer science and accounting. I recently left my job in the mortgage industry and am getting ready for the trip to China. I plan to be a stay-at-home mom for the foreseeable future.

Our agency is Great Wall. We started the process in August 1999, and our dossier was logged in to China on February 16, 2000. We tried to have a child 12 years ago, but due to a rare and unexpected reaction to fertility drugs, my ovaries hyperstimulated and I had to have them both removed during emergency surgery. After many years of mulling over the idea of domestic adoption (too expensive and too risky), I saw a show on International adoption and hopped right on to the Internet, and here we are.
