Elizabeth Briscoe &
Gordon Buchanan

us ...
Elizabeth, 43, and Gordon, 47, live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, with our daughter Iona Li-Xiang Briscoe Buchanan (right), born June 10, 1997, and adopted June 30, 1998, from the Linchuan Welfare Institute, Jiangxi Province, PRC. I (Elizabeth) am an accountant, and Gordon is an electronic engineer. On my 40th birthday, I was reviewing my life and decided that I didn't want to reach the end of my days without having any children. It then took a wee bit of time to persuade Gordon! This was in June 1996, and we adopted Iona in June 1998. It took a long time, as we had an awful SW who eventually gave us "the benefit of the doubt" and who then failed to write the homestudy in the way required for international adoptions. She then dumped us, and we had to find another SW. Luckily, our second SW has been great and did the HS for #2 with one visit.

our adoption plans ...
Our agency is Children's Bridge, and we have requested a child under 12 months old. We started the process on November 4, 1999, and our DTC date is February 11, 2000. Our daughter Iona was 12 months old and in foster care when we met her and was quite delayed. She flopped when sitting up and couldn't roll over or crawl. What she could do was use her fingers as pincers to pick up rice, etc. This skill has continued, and she is a wiz with chopsticks and crayons. With some EI, she cought up very quickly and has age-appropriate gross-motor skills. Iona started P/T Montessori last September when I went back to work and she is very happy there. She is learning to write her name (at the moment it is "Ioan," but who cares?). I have some reservations about Montessori, as I feel she is already a very studious little girl, and they are encouraging her along a very "educational" path. This may only apply to this Montessori, but I would like her to do more messy play-painting, water play, Play-Doh, etc. I feel that we can do words and numbers with her very easily, but I am hopeless at crafts and all that other stuff. Iona has added such joy to our lives that we want to do it again. We would like her to have a sister to share things with — including the responsibility of coping with us when we get old and decrepit.
