Kathlene & Scot

us ...
Kathlene, 37, and Scot, 35, teach writing and literature to university students. Kathlene teaches creative writing and literature; Scot, technical writing for engineers. We spend the school year in the Deep South and the summers in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where Kathlene writes and gardens while Scot cooks and builds model airplanes. We lived in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, from 1993 to 1994 and in Ankara, Turkey, for two years after that, both times teaching at universities. We have a vast and tangled world network of e-mail family and friends. And we have two very naughty and much-traveled cats, Pasha and Pete.

our adoption plans ...
Our agency is Americans Adopting Orphans. We have requested a child as young as possible, probably 6-12 months old. We started the paperchase in August 1999, and our dossier was logged in on February 25, 2000. This whole process started for us when we lived in China. The classes we taught were filled with the most amazing young people. Our lives connected with theirs. It is difficult not to be drawn into an intense relationship with Chinese people and culture when you visit or live there. Fast forward to the summer of 1999, when we finally decided that we were ready to pick up and follow that "red thread" we had first encountered five years ago. We have requested a baby girl from Chengdu or another place within central Sichuan Province because of our familiarity with and affection for that area. We are already planning the places we will take our daughter as she grows up, China being at the top of a long list. We are excited and very happy about the thought of meeting and holding her.
