August 11, 2002 - "THE" Day!!!!

          6:50 a.m.
I got up since I had some mild contractions. They weren't really painful, but I could
feel them. I woke Sathish and my mom up.

          9:30 a.m.
I am still continuing to have contractions, although they don't really hurt me.
We decided to go to the hospital, although we were almost positive that I am not in
active labor. We knew we would be sent back home.

          10:00 a.m.
We went to "Labor and Delivery" unit at the West LA Kaiser Permanente Hospital.
The nurse was Ms. Teresa LaFrontiere. She entered all my details in the computer.
I was hooked on to the monitors. My contractions were coming 7 minutes apart. After about
half hour, the nurse midwife Ms. Jacqueline Rice came to check me. She did an internal
exam and told me that I am less than a centimeter dialated. She sent me back home
and asked me to come back, if the contractions became more closer (2-3 minutes apart)
or if the water breaks. She also told me that I am not in active labor, since
I could easily walk and talk thru' the contractions. She also advised me to
keep walking at home, instead of sitting or lying down.

          11:45 a.m.
We came back home and I had a light lunch. We were timing the contractions. They were still
7 minutes apart. I kept walking.

          3:45 p.m.
It was getting little painful, but contractions were still 5-6 minutes apart.
I almost wanted to go to the hospital and take epidural. But Sathish and my mom
were reluctant to go to the hospital, since they thought that contractions weren't close
            enough.

          4:15 p.m.
The pain became really worse and it was totally unbearable. I think active labor has set in.
My water broke and contractions started intensifying.

          4:25 p.m.
We left home for the hospital. The contractions were at the peak while we were
in the car, driving to the hospital. It was really unbearable. Decided to take
            epidural, once I reach there.

          4:55 p.m.
I go to the "Labor and Delivery" Unit in the hospital. They admitted me. I ask for
epidural. The nurse tells me that she has to check me, if I am within the window to get
pain medication. Also, I need to be on IV. I was taken to the labor room.
The nurse Ms. Teresa Lafrontiere, retrieved my record in the computer.
Pain is too much. I keep asking for epidural. Dr. Tracy Sylvester asked me to be patient.
She told me that the nurse will have to check me. She also told me that she would
call the anesthesiologist for administering epidural.

          5:30 p.m.
The nurse midwife Ms. Jacqueline Rice, fondly called Jackie arrives. She did an
internal exam and told me that I am complete and that she could feel the baby's head.
That mean's that I am ready to push and cannot have any epidural. She asked for the
delivery room to be made ready and transfer me there. Wow!!! the labor progressed so fast.
Jackie couldn't believe that either, since it was my first baby.
While I am trasferred to the delivery room, the anesthesiologist arrives. Jackie pointed
at me and told them, "This patient must have been given epidural, but now it is too late".

          6:10 p.m.
I am in the delivery room. Suffering from pain as well as happy that I am going
to see my baby soon... Ms. Sylvia Siguenza was my nurse. She was monitoring the fetal
heart beat and my contractions. She was extremely good. No words to describe!!! I am lucky.
Sathish and my mom are with me.
Started "Pushing" at 6:20 p.m. and "Pushed", "Pushed" and "Pushed" for over two hours.
I was all exhausted. Couldn't push any further, but had to. Jackie kept coming to see
how I am doing. She was so nice too. I am lucky again. Her words were so encouraging
and gave me all the energy to "Push".

          8:30 p.m.
The baby's head has "Crowned". Sylvia calls Jackie. She comes in along with a team of
nurses. Jackie plays the birthing music. Switches off all lights in the room, except
the one just above my bed. She is ready to bring my baby into this world.

          8:41 p.m.
The little one arrives - a sweet baby boy!!! A wonderful moment in our lives that we
            will cherish for ever.
My mom and I kiss each other and Sathish takes the first picture of our son.

Seen above is the first picture of our son. He is bonding with me. A precious moment
in my life. Also seen in the picture is my mom's hand. She presented a silver spoon to
him. Yes our son is born with a silver spoon.
