One Year Milestones

1 Year

Remoes cloth to find toy beneath; knows 3 or 4 words; walks holding on to things

14 Months

Uses words or gestures to make wants known; initiates games; walks and stands alone for short periods

15 Months

Scribbles spontaneously; finger feeds; drinks from cup; toddles competently

16-18 Month

Becomes interested in climbing; stacks 3 small blocks; responds to directions ("sit down," "come over here")

1 1/2 Years

Enjoys pat-a-cake and "this little piggy"; imitates parents; behavior becomes goal-directed

19-20 Month

Throws ball underhand; can accurately locate a sound from above, below, or the side

21 Months

Recognizes significant number of new words; tentatively navigates stairs while holding on to railing

22 Months

Knows up to 200 words; sleeps 10 to 12 hours nightly with an afternoon nap; inserts spoon in mouth with out turning it

23 Months

Can draw a straight line; tries to dress self (though usually unsuccessfully); identifies body parts

2 Year

Uses 2- or 3-word sentences; runs in a straight line; strings large beads on a shoelace
