St Michaels after rebuilding These are the families who took up the challenge to rebuild and refurbish our church, shown in this painting as a church with a problem roof repaired, a new Chancel and the church yard disciplined.

In 1851 the Census lists 242 people living in Bulley, with 91 born here. There are 50 households listed, so in the 30 years to 1881 the population reduced by 90 and the buildings recognised as suitable for dwellings fell by 15.

The community rebuilt the church, and the school enabled the children to develop. Birdwood chapel was built about 1890.

1876 - National School (for Churcham and Bulley conjointly) - John Collier, master.

St Andrews Churcham St Andrews Churcham Churcham before the roof caught fire.

St Andrews Churcham St Andrews Churcham has also had a refurbishment - but they have a date - 26 October 1875, when the roof caught fire. These images show how close Churcham Manor is to the church. The account of fighting the fire reported that the Manor barely escaped also burning. As you can see, the Chancel, Bell tower and walls are standing.

Jack Stait The Bells were restored, a new spire was built, and a fireproof roof constructed. Jack Stait, waving from the top of the new hay stack built in 1926, was not born when the fire took place. He became the Leader of the bell ringing team until he had a nasty accident with a hay threshing machine. One of the handy items stored at the Churcham Vicarage was an three-wheeled Invalid Chair, which Jack was glad to be able to borrow. There was also a donkey and cart, used when parishioners moved house.
