Huntley 1876
HUNTLEY is a parish and village in Westbury-on-Severn union, containing, by the census of 1861, 533, and in 1871, 516 inhabitants, and 1146 acres of land; in the deanery of the Forest, archdeaconry of Gloucester, diocese of Gloucerter and Bristol, hundred of the Duchy of Lancaster, West Gloucestershire; 4 miles south from Newent, 7 north-west from Gloucester, 7 north-east from Newnham, and 9 south-east from Ross, on the road from thence to Gloucester. The living is a discharged rectory, in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev. Henry E. Miles, M.A., valued at £280 per annum, with residence. The church is a handsome edifice, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which was entirely rebuilt in 1863, with the exception of the tower, which on rebuilding the church was surmounted by a spire; it consists of nave, chancel, and north aisle, with vestry, and has accommodation for 392 people. The rectory was at the same time enlarged and improved, the whole being done at the expense of the late rector, the Rev. Daniel Capper, M.A. There is also another rectory house, which has been made into a handsome residence, in the Elizabethan style, by the present rector, he having exchanged the original glebe house and land with Edwin Probyn, Esq., for other land in the parish. There are National Schools for children of both sexes, which have recently been erected by the rector. The rateable value of this parish is £2524.HUNTLEY MANOR HOUSE is a noble mansion, the seat of Edwin Probyn, Esq., D.L., J.P., who is lord of the manor and chief owner of the soil.
