Open Universities of Hong Kong

 

The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK), formerly the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong (OLI), is the first university offering open and distance education in Hong Kong. The change of title, in May 1997, reflects the recognition of the University's academic standing, achievements and contributions over the past years.

Since its inception in 1989 the University has striven continuously to achieve its mission of providing high quality and flexible further education opportunities for adults. Currently the University offers more than 100 postgraduate, degree, associate degree and  sub-degree programmes.

The OUHK uses a flexible credit system under which students earn credits for each course and accumulate credits towards a degree. The OUHK offers great freedom for its students in where and when they study, and provide them with carefully structured materials to guide them through the courses. There are also trained tutors who hold tutorial sessions, comment on and mark assignments, and answer students' queries by phone and correspondence.

In April 1996, the Institute moved to its permanent campus in Ho Man Tin. The campus comprises such facilities as a library, a computer laboratory, an audio-visual centre, a language laboratory, a lecture theatre, science project laboratories, tutorial rooms and a disabled students' centre. With the official launch of the Electronic Library in November 1998, students of the OUHK now have easy access, from anywhere they want, to data equivalent to over 500,000 volumes of publications. The new facilities and equipment, coupled with the flexibility of distance education system, provide an ideal learning environment for adult students in Hong Kong. The Open Universities

The Open University (OU) is the United Kingdom's only university dedicated to distance learning

Nearly all students are studying part-time. About 70 per cent of undergraduate students are in full-time employment. More than 50,000 students are sponsored by their employers for their studies.

Open University

The Open University (OU) is the UK's 'open' learning university. It was established in 1969, and the first students started in January 1971.[4] The majority of students are based in the UK, but its courses are also studied in the rest of Europe, in North and South America, in Africa and in Australasia/Asia.[5] The administration is based at Walton Hall, Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, but has regional centres in each of its thirteen regions around the UK. The university awards undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, diplomas and certificates.

With more than 180,000 students enrolled, including more than 25,000 students studying overseas,[6] it is the largest academic institution in the UK by student number, and qualifies as one of the world's mega universities. Since it was founded, more than 3 million students have studied its courses. It was rated top University in England and Wales for student satisfaction in the 2005[7] and 2006[8] UK government national student satisfaction survey

Arab Open University has been established with the primary objective to enable those young men and women in the Arab World, who did not have the chance to attend the University, to pursue their higher education, so that they can become an active member in their society and to improve their living standard through the learning tools and experiences combined with specialized program knowledge acquired at AOU. Furthermore, AOU is a non-profit Higher Education Institution, and in support of its mission, it has a set guiding principle for itself that of making Higher Education affordable, so that those who do not have the financial means to attend private Universities, will have a chance to attend AOU. Four factors have contributed and will continue to contribute to this vision and constitute the mission and the pillars that support the idea of AOU and its existence: “The Arab Open University is Open to people, places, ideas, and methods”
