Religions

Do I find religions irrational?

Imminently no. Irrationality is that which is senseless, lacking of reason and absurd.

Religions, in my opinion, strive for the same thing. That is ideal. They strive for perfection. There is sense in this. The idea is, is that if we can achieve this perfection we will greatly improve the statis of our lifestles. There is a point to religions, I don't find them to be absurd because they all have a common goal of good will, peace, compassion, ect.

Are they reasonable?

I find them to be so, for the very fact that they are based on ideals. We see good actions every day. Someone opening a door for someone else, someone helping a person who really didn't deserve to be helped. The Dalai Lama said that if everyone would do one kind thing to another person everyday the world would be a better place, but if he couldn't do something kind, at least not to hurt another person. The ideas of religion are peace. They are ideals for the perfect ways of life.

Now, are religions illogical?

(I seperated illogical and irrational becaue they hold such different definitions)

Yes, some are illogical. But only on the basis of deity. Religions that claim an entity, person-like deity are completely illogical. Such a God is not anything more than a human concoction and is so contradictory that words can not explain it.

I think when it comes to religion there are only 4 things that people should adhere to.

1. Prayer/Meditation -- As the Dalai Lama said "When the mind is aggitated, it can not see objectively." Meditation/Prayer allow the individual to clear the mind to focus on something outside of their own subjectiveness.

2. Altruism -- Selfless giving. This is of everything, time, resources, money, compassion, understanding -- everything.

3. Good actions/karma -- The follows should be concerned with what the results of their actions should be. What will be the result? Will it cause a greater good?

4. Education -- The key to life is education. Through this we reach understanding about ourself, understanding about others and understanding about the world around us.

The rest is just frivolous details.
